Just Checking In: Is Outsourced Still Terrible?

I hated the Outsourced pilot and felt similarly about its second episode, but since by that point the ratings had settled down into numbers low enough to be considered pretty irrelevant (even though the show has been renewed for an entire season), I decided to stop watching for a while. But last night, while I was waiting for Grey's and Nikita to finish recording in the other room, and the World Series game was beginning to look like the shut-out (go Giants!) it ultimately became, I decided to revisit the show to see why a few of you have defended it so passionately. And I guess I'm glad that I did, because even though it definitely wasted twenty minutes of my time, it did reinforce my confidence that I have not been unfair to this show. Here are the two biggest ongoing issues with Outsourced then and now.

Todd Still Sucks
I didn't think it was possible, but he is actually stupider than Michael Scott, which is especially problematic when you take into consideration the fact that that stupidity isn't utilized in the slightest funny or likable way. Just focusing on this episode alone, the guy assumed Indians know everything about Halloween and set up elaborate pranks that scared the shit out of all of them, because after spending five previous episodes learning all about how Indian culture is drastically different from American culture, he still couldn't connect those dots and assume that maybe he should give them a heads up about how we think it's funny to have guys jumping out of closets with chainsaws (which, by the way, Charlie should definitely have known by now, even though he did the same gag twice, with the same self-injuring effect).

Then there were the instances of him not getting an obvious "spice rack" costume, or an even more obvious "chick magnet" costume, the latter of which he guessed was an "Indian slaughterhouse," which I don't even get, like who the hell thinks Indians kill chickens by magnetizing them? And if that weren't irritating enough his whole storyline with Asha just seems infuriating for many reasons, not the least of which was how, after he kissed her and she fled from him in very obvious distress, he just assumed he's awesome and was all "I want to remember this moment forever!" First of all, you're her boss. Secondly, she's clearly having a lot of trouble dealing with her inexplicable crush on you being in conflict with her cultural obligations to submit to an arranged marriage. Thirdly, you are a self-centered, oblivious asshole with few redeeming qualities. He is the weakest part of the show, and as its series lead, that's a big problem.

The Jokes Are Still Lazy and Useless
I think it's fine at this point to agree to disagree about the show being racist, but so many of the jokes about cultural differences are so obvious, tired and lazy that at best they serve no purpose. Todd sees Indians dressed as Native Americans at his Halloween party and feels the need to shout "Redundant!" at them. Hilarious. Todd's apartment has a bar, while Gupta's has bars -- on the window. Hysterical! Last year Todd dressed as "God's gift to women" for Halloween. "Which God?" innocently asks Gupta. Oh, right! Because his religion has so many Gods! Not only is this shit not funny, I still don't see what it does to further any discussion about anything, or what good it does for anybody, or why anyone is just having a ball watching it. We all can and should have different tastes in things, but it's rare that I can't even see the appeal in something, but the humor in Outsourced, by and large, is one of those rarities.

I liked Rajiv dressing up as Todd, though. "Is this safe to eat? Where is football?" is pretty similar to the Todd impression I do around the office. Hey! You don't suppose they anticipated critics feeling that way, do you?

You can watch the episode below if you missed it, and, as always, we want to hear what you think in the comments.
