Last night's episode of Parenthood was certainly heart-tugging, but it didn't stand up to the best Halloween episodes of all time. Last year we had the 10 best episodes of all time, but we've added a few more to the list and have our fingers crossed that Glee's Rocky Horror, Community's supposedly outrageous episode and Modern Family's twisted holiday will soon be among our all-time favorites.
Community, "Introduction to Statistics" (2009)
This episode is great not simply because everyone dresses up in costume, but because their costumes reveal so very much about their different characters. At Annie's Day of the Dead party (a.k.a. "Mexican Halloween"), movie-obsessed Abed is completely in character as Batman, complete with gravelly Christian Bale voice, and Pierce is the Beastmaster, complete with fake full-body muscle suit. But when Pierce swaps medications with Starburns, he builds a cocoon of chairs and tables, and admits to Jeff that he's never even seen Beastmaster -- he just wore the costume to be cool (or what he perceives as cool, with his terrible vision). As the cocoon comes crashing down on Pierce and Jeff, Abed Batman swoops in and pulls them both to safety.
Castle, "Vampire Weekend" (2009)
This one made the list not just because of the fact that big kid Castle had a Halloween party and that everyone had to put a costume on, or for the fact that there was a vampire murder to be investigated, but because of its clever use of an inside joke. In a sight gag, they had show star Nathan Fillion dress in a "space cowboy" costume, a reference to his brilliant but cancelled show Firefly. Having his daughter say that he'd worn it five years ago and it was time to get over it was just icing on the cake.
Chuck, "Chuck Versus the Sandworm" (2008)
There was a plot about some sort of techy wiz kid who Chuck bonds with, but we were too distracted by the sight of Sarah in a Princess Leia costume, once in a photoshopped cosplay pic and once at a real party, to really pay much attention. But it wasn't all about the sexy, Chuck bonded with his best pal Morgan by keeping their tradition alive of wearing their Dune inspired Sandworm costume, instead of opting for something cooler. He even let Morgan have the honor of being the head. Sweet.
