ABC's gotta do something to fill the time between Dancing With the Stars seasons, so starting in late November and abruptly ending before the new year we are getting six episodes of Skating With the Stars, a DWTS on ice, if you will, 66 percent filled with people I've actually heard of! Not a bad ratio as far as these shows go, really. We don't know who their pro partners are yet (I didn't recognize any figure skating celebs in last night's promo, but I wasn't really looking at the pros), but here are some comments on the "stars" we'll be watching falling on their asses and accidentally slashing themselves and others with their skates come Thanksgiving time.
Sean Young
Obviously, this is the part of the show that's going to be worth watching. Sean Young is better known for coming across like a crazy person than she is for being an actress, and while I question the judgment of a network supplying her feet with deadly cutting instruments, as a viewer I'm all for it. At least I'll be safe in my living room.
Also, in the promo she made a joke about Blade Runner on ice, which may have been wise in that it reminds us of her more highbrow repertoire, but hopefully she'll remember her other beloved classic film and make "Toepick ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuut!" her catchphrase.
Brandon Mychal Smith
All I know about him is that he's the Sonny With a Chance star who isn't in rehab right now, and that he seemed awfully jokey in his two second intro last night. Hope he's not annoying, but he is a Disney star, and those two things are pretty much mutually exclusive.
Vince Neil
Vince Neil used to be a famous musician, but now he just kind of gets arrested a lot? And he's almost 50? I can't really see this turning out that well, performance-wise, but maybe we'll find out that this notoriously drunken, violent guy has a Bret Michaels heart of gold (that whole Tish Cyrus rumor notwithstanding, of course). But I doubt it.
Jonny Moseley
He is an Olympic athlete accustomed to frozen conditions! He is the ringer!
Bethenny Frankel
This does not seem like my girl Bethenny at all. She seems like the type who would hold out for the real spotlight, Dancing With the Stars and its 20 million viewers, but nevertheless, here we stand. Love her or hate her, she could be funny here if they let her openly talk trash about her competitors and mock how funny they look with their gaping wounds. If it's the love fest that DWTS is, however, I don't see the point in having her. Unless she goes all Kristy Swanson on her partner, of course. That would be fun.
Rebecca Budig
Good synergy, ABC. Reading the press release for Budig's casting was the first time I've thought about All My Children in probably... ever.
