Today's TWoP News: November 30, 2010

Today (and late yesterday) has been a big day for news, with a few high-profile new series getting announced and some big-name casting. Which should all make the photos to the left fairly misleading.

The big news is that Vampire Diaries creator Kevin Williamson is planning a companion series about paranormal investigators. Yes, it's Buffy meets X-Files, so you can allow your brains to start melting now.

Speaking of the Buffster, there's good news for the Faith-ful: Eliza Dushku will return to TV in a TNT series about a Northwestern police officer who has to partner up with her recently transferred big-city cop father under the callsign "Bird Dog," which we hope has some significance, since it's also the title of the series. In other news, TNT has hired D.B. Sweeney to play a cop who gets partnered up with, basically, the cast of The Big Bang Theory.

Sarah Jones, a.k.a. Polly Zobelle on Sons of Anarchy, is getting sent to Alcatraz, or rather J.J. Abrams' new TV show about the island prison. Assuming this isn't another Undercovers situation, it looks like getting shot was the best thing that could have happened to her.

TV Land has greenlit two more comedy pilots, one starring Fran Drescher as a divorcee who starts dating again and another about a cola company that gets a new, young, female boss. Man, even their new series feel nostalgic!

The Blues Brothers are reuniting -- genetically, anyway -- on The Defenders. Dan Aykroyd will play a judge to Jim Belushi's attorney character. Kinda makes you wonder what John would be doing if he was around today. Not legal dramas, probably.

Still sad that The West Wing was cancelled? Well, the show is still going on on Twitter. It's being written by zealous fans, because Aaron Sorkin would need more than 140 characters.

Kara DioGuardi is writing an autobiography about her time on American Idol. To paraphrase Pee-wee Herman, we don't have to read it -- we survived it.

And finally, we may be drunk, but The Cape is starting to look good to us. We blame Heroes, No Ordinary Family and this cheap boxed wine.
