It's always sad when people get fired, but we can't say that we were disappointed to hear that showrunner Frank Darabont has dismissed all of the writers from the first season of The Walking Dead. Who knows if his plan to replace them with freelancers will yield better results, but you have to admit that the show is nowhere near as entertaining as a TV show about zombies should be -- especially one based on a pretty amazing comic book. And while the production values are impeccable, a lot of the problems stem from the writing. Here are just a few things that bug us about the series:
We No Longer Like the Main Character
After five episodes, Rick has gone from being a wide-eyed everyman to being a sanctimonious jerk. Sure, he won't let Darryl kill Jim just because he's been bitten, but he also won't ask Jim what he wants to do, instead championing a trip to the CDC in his name, one that Jim never even gets to complete. And Rick's continued harping on the fact that he has a family and his dopey belief that he was the one who could talk to Andrea and make her stop hugging her dead sister after everyone else had tried only add to his douchiness.
Inconsistent Internal Logic
Merle went crazy from the heat and hacked his own hand off before the gang could get back to rescue him, but how many days was he actually up on that roof? Assuming it takes less than a day to get back to camp, he couldn't have been up there for more than a single night. After all, when their truck was stolen (they assume by Merle), the gang appeared to jog back to camp loaded down with guns and tools. And why not just get a new ride? Rick hotwired a sports car the day before, and they couldn't have been far from a highway full of abandoned cars, some of which probably still had gas in them. It just don't make sense!
All the Best Characters Are Missing or Underutilized
Morgan and his son were great in the first episode, but since then we've gotten bupkus, not even over the walkie-talkie. Merle was a jerk at first, but now we kinda miss him and want him to come back and be racist some more; somehow, asshole Darryl has become our favorite character in his brother's absence. And Glen was an awesome, honest, brave scaredy-cat from the get-go, but in the last episode he only got to whine about how the bodies of friends are disposed of. Don't ruin Glen for us, too.
Lazy Stereotypes
Abusive husband Ed is one of the most comically unlikeable characters ever. After lounging around drinking beer as the women do laundry, he attempts to get them to stop laughing and talking, to get more work done. After being accused of beating his wife, he then beats his wife in front of several people, becoming an incredibly convenient target of Shane's pent-up aggression. Then, as Ed recuperates and shuns the rest of the camp's company, he asks his daughter to stay with him, thereby insinuating that he's also been molesting his daughter. I guess they needed to put one more nail in his coffin before the zombies attacked five minutes later and killed him. We won't even get into the gang of Atlanta cholos who kidnap Glen or the fact that the show's only current black character is named "T-Dog."
Brainless Conversations
Amy and Andrea's long conversation in the boat about how their father taught one sister one way of fishing and the other daughter another way because they had different temperaments was not only an awfully dull way to start off an episode, it was a dull conversation to have in general, especially on a show about zombies. And if their preferred fishing styles said anything meaningful about their characters, it didn't really matter very much, since this conversation took place in the episode where Amy died, which means it was a cheap attempt to build up the sisters' relationship (and poorly defined characters) before the writers killed one of them off, thereby making the other's grief more "real."
Shane is Still Frickin' Alive
I swear, if I have to hear one more angry conversation between Shane and Lori about their history or how he lied to her or Shane and Rick about why Rick is wrong about something or why Shane also cares about Lori, I'm gonna flip. If the show was following the comic book a little more closely, the last episode would have been Shane's swan song, after he leveled his gun at Rick. But no, we get to keep him around for one more episode. If they don't kill him off next week, hopefully the freelancers will finish the job.

I've mostly enjoyed the show so far, but I'm really a big fan of the comic. What I don't understand is why they've changed so much from the comic storyline? It seemed that there were enough characters and enough drama to make a great tv show.
I understand that television and books are two different media, and I'm usually not one to harp about differences between the two, but aside from the first episode the television series just doesn't seem to have anything in common with the comic at all (aside from a small number of characters).
What shows does this website like? Every article is either extremely snarky or excessively critical.
Ahahaha. What website do you think you're ON?
I dunno, I've been liking it a lot so far. About Merle, you say "we" miss him. Who is "we," exactly, because I sure don't. You are right, however, that Daryl is awesome, aside from the racist stuff (although for some reason it is hilarious to me when he calls Glen "Chinaman." It almost seems like an endearment at this point). And Merle didn't necessarily go crazy from heat. As I understood it, he went crazy from fear, and from already being a little crazy. He didn't cut his hand off until the walkers started trying to get through the door. That's not crazy--just good common sense.
Also, I don't think Rick is sanctimonious at all. In fact, he's shown a lot of deference to Shane as camp leader. He never tries to force his "agenda;" he's usually very humble in his, "Listen, guys, I think this is what we should do..." He's just very driven by what he feels to be his personal obligations and he's trying to do the right thing, which is hard when you're in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. (And I think Shane is pretty damn sexy, so I'm not mad he's still alive. And I'm afraid if they kill him off we'll be denied the confrontation between him and Rick about what went down with Lori.)
Anyway, I like the way the show is going, and I hope it stays on a good track.
There's a difference between showing no pity and going looking for things to pick at as far as I'm concerned. Though in fairness, they do go the other way into preposterous fawning of some shows as well.
Personally I'm still really enjoying the show (haven't read the comic yet), though I do miss Morgan, mainly because Lennie James is awesome.
But the writing is still solid (the supposed difference between supposedly awful writing and award winning writing is not nearly so great as it should be judging by the ridiculous praise some shows get with nothing special about their writing), I find Rick to be a well portrayed, decent character whose flaws are obvious without being overwhelming, and strangely enjoying Darryl as a character.
All in all, I'm finding it more entertaining than I would have expected for a TV show about zombies.
I'm sure they could and should have found another car to hotwire, though I don't see how they could have got one from the highway at least - they were end to end for miles, no way to move them out even if they got it to start.
The writers on"The Walking Dead" were all FIRED, despite it being named "The best show on T.V." by Entertainment Weekly!!! What gives??A whole group of writers fired in this economy?! They should go on NBC's MINUTE TO WIN IT, win that million dollar prize! Wish we all could...That show ROCKSSSS. BTW.. Check out a new season on Tuesday, Dec 7th at 8pm/7c. http://bit.ly/hboOtY
Also, there are two black characters. There's the woman also.
I've been loving the show all along. I completely disagree with your assessment. Every week, I've been glued to the screen.
I've had some issues with the writing being a bit obvious and melodramatic, but I was actually blaming that on Darabont, because you can find that sort of thing in his films, too. I really don't have much faith that this move is going to improve the show.
And using freelance writers sounds like a terrible idea. For one thing, it will probably make the show feel tonally uneven. For another, the WGA might not be too happy about Darabont firing his entire writing staff (and right before Christmas, too), which might make freelancers feel like they'd be shooting themselves in the foot to work with him.
I do agree about Darryl, though--he's my favorite because he's not really marred by the sentimentality and melodrama that are abundant elsewhere in the show.
The show's no masterpiece and all the leads annoy me. This reviewer didn't remark on the painful lack of common sense exhibited by the survivors that makes every episode a trial.
But I keep watching — because zombies might show up at any moment! Frankly, one thing we learn from this show is that frequent zombie incursions would improve a lot of mediocre television.
Having issues with the writing this season and supporting Darabont's move are two separate things.
First off, if you've got problems with the writing, you have problems with Darabont more than you do the writers who just got canned. He's the showrunner. Everything runs through him. And, as noted, he's claiming the writing credit on half of the episodes. What makes you think a freelance/BBC-type process run by Darabont will be any better on these things than the process run by Darabont already?
Also, the process Darabont's talking about putting into place is virtually guaranteed to be a complete clusterfuck - meaning, it's going to be worse next season if this is how he's going to do it.

I noticed the lazy stereotyping also. Where as Merle is concerned, fine. You always can use one. But 3 including the wife abusing guy and now it's a little dumb.
Yes. Bring back Morgan his son. Felt real. The actor brought some real weight to the pilot.
It's only 6 episodes. We who enjoy this kind of thing suffer from a bad case of objectivism. I'm not sure these things have dragged the show down yet. Normally I'd be all over stuff like this but after seeing what they have done, I'm willing to give them more room to grow.
At first the series started off quite well, but with each episode it is starting to make the story more and more ridiculous...hopefully some better writers are coming in to take care of the job!
Best show I have seen on television in a long time. The directing, camera work, writing acting is just completly over the top like watching a movie.
The funny thing is I don't think you really understand the show. Every thing you complain about in the charachter flaws is the central story.
Yes there are Zombies as bad guys, but a main theme is how society has to change to deal with that, and that sometimes the people are the walking dead.
Rick tries to make Good descisions but alot of times they come out bad SHould he leave some of the guns with this person. Should he handcuff rascists to the pipe? If you were in a war zone you would understand that decisions on right and wrong do not conform to societies right and wrong.
that is a central issue of the show the charachters struggle with.
I can't say I am sad about dumping the writers. I am a huge fan of the comic but am all for not doggedly being faithful to it, you have to adapt to what works for the new medium...however, they kind of threw the baby out with the bath water by veering so far from the comic. Kirkman didn't dwell on the Shane-Lori-Rick stuff (a love triangle is usually uber-lazy plot device) and the characters are all shades of gray and complex, and the show has gone in a far more generic (safe) direction that is a little boring. BUT I am cautiously optimistic that things will improve, some of the problems are probably Darabont's fault but I am hoping that this change means he has just decided to go in a new direction.
Morgan comes back much later in the series. His absence is explicit.
Kristen made some excellent observations that I also noted. Merle definitely seemed to cut his hand off to get away from the zombies about to eat him (not because he was psycho), and there's definitely two black characters. I sort of think this article was a hurried, angry rant, instead of a well thought out review. The show is great and rising in popularity. People like it. It's a shame all those writers were fired.
Wha? Don't really get the criticism. Sometimes TWOP just makes articles for the sake of making them. This show doesn't have as many issues as are presented here. I've never really noticed a problem with the writing... which I usually have a major problem with on lots of shows.
If the show didn't deviate from the comic then I would have very little reason to watch it. If I know exactly what's going to happen there is no excitement or suspense. As far as the whole Shane thing, Kirkman has already expressed that he wishes he had been able to extend the love triangle storyline. He was worried the book wouldn't last so he rushed things to get to other things. Rick reminds me of Jack from Lost. He's kind of forced in to being "sanctimonious" because people are looking to him for answers whether he wants them to or not. Every show has stereotypes, mostly because life has stereotypes, so I won't even get in to that one. Glen found a car, by chance, in the city and he was able to use it to go the wrong way on the interstate because the exit roads from Atlanta were filled with abandoned cars. The only thing I agree with is the fishing scene. I don't mind the talking scenes when used properly to establish relationships, but that one was forced hardcore. I think the show has been excellent so far and I'm hoping that it isn't ruined by Darabont's experiment. Time will tell though.
Don't attack the author of this article. They have some rather fantastic points actually. Except for the part about the comic book that it's based on being amazing. It is not. This show is ridiculous for exactly the reasons that were listed above.
I have problems, but not the same problems as the author of this piece.
~ I am very glad that they are not following the comic. I hate being spoiled, and by going in a different direction, the future of the show is a big, clean slate.
~ I don't see the main character as sanctimonious at all. He's a leader when a leader is needed. That's a good thing.
~ My problem is that too much time is wasted. This author picks on the boat scene, but there are many scenes that seem to drag on. When the season only has six episodes, the time could be used much better. Build up the characters, sure, but give me some action while you're doing so. The season finale was a big let down to me, just because so much time was spent chit-chatting. I don't know about you, but during a zombie apocalypse, I'm not going to waste time talking over my feelings.
I like the show. It's not perfect, but is enjoyable. I still prefer it to the comic book (never been a huge Kirkman fan). I do agree with a previous poster, that if the writing is found to be lacking, then the fault lies with the showrunner, especially if he himself is involved with the writing. Here's hoping season 2 is just an enjoyable.
I'd have to disagree about the boat scene. What that scene was about was what was not said between the characters; about how each of them missed out on being a sister to the other. This gave Amy's death and Andrea's grief more impact than if it was a straight zombie story with arbitrary killing. For this show to have legs it has to be about character and loss. Scenes like that build that.
Hi!Me I'm 10,my brother's name is Sylas he's 8,and my twin sister Adileigh love your show and we have some ideas you can write for your next season. One of our ideas are, Rick starts to realise the bugs start caring the disease from the walkers blood.Another idea is Dale sees that Shane has been bit but Shane says "If you tell I'll shoot you!"It will make it a lot more interesting.Because the kids at my school say that one of the main characters get bit like Shane or Rick's wife.WE WOULD REALLY LIKE TO BE ON YOUR SHOW!
