TWoP 10: Biggest Golden Globe and SAG Award Snubs

This week kicked off the start of awards season with nominations being announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for their Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild for their SAG Awards. And while there were some shockers in the television categories (Piper Perabo?! Hot in Cleveland?!!), there were also a lot of old standbys, meaning that many deserving shows and actors got left out in the cold. Here are the most egregious snubs from both awards bodies:

10. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
While Eric Stonesteet, Ed O'Neill and Ty Burrell all snagged nominations in various places, poor Jesse Tyler Ferguson was ignored. His neurotic Mitchell is pretty damned funny and a great counterpart to Stonestreet's Cam. If all the other guys were getting love, it seems odd that Jesse was the one left out.

9. Lost
The final season of Lost got no recognition anywhere? Not even a throwaway nod? Or a nomination for Michael Emerson or Terry O'Quinn? Sure the last episode made us want to throw things at the TV, but we thought they'd at least reward the actors and the show for its legendary status.

8. Breaking Bad
Bryan Cranston is incredible. There is no denying that. He deserves all the accolades he keeps getting. However, one man does not make the entire show. There's a bunch of talented people on there doing some tremendously well-executed work, and it is a shame that while he's acknowledged, the show and his amazing (and Emmy Award-winning) co-star Aaron Paul aren't.

7. John Noble, Fringe
Have you seen Noble playing his alternate reality self? Clearly the nominating committees for both SAG and the Globes haven't. If they had, there's no way they would have left Walter and Walternate off the list.

6. The Vampire Diaries
Yes, it is a CW show. Yes, it is a show about vampires. But the Golden Globes have nominated True Blood in the past, so it isn't so far fetched to think that this well-written, well-acted drama, which actually delivers with plot and action week after week, would get some love. And if the Globes thought that Piper Perabo (who is probably the worst thing about Covert Affairs) was worthy of acknowledgment, clearly they haven't seen Nina Dobrev in action. She's grown up over the course of the year and really nails both her sweet and evil characters. In fact, her ability to flip between them is mesmerizing.

5. The Big Bang Theory
We all love Sheldon Cooper, so we're happy that Jim Parsons got a Globes nod, but what about the rest of the cast? The show wouldn't be the same without Koothrapali, Leonard and Wolowitz. Even Penny has grown on us. It's truly a comedy where everyone pulls their weight, so it should have gotten at least a SAG ensemble nomination. At any rate, it was definitely more deserving than a lackluster season of The Office.

4. Friday Night Lights
Is it because it airs on DirecTV first? Did Connie Britton somehow offend someone at the SAG Awards? We're baffled as to how this show gets so completely and utterly neglected at the majority of these awards bodies. Few programs are able to hit the emotional resonance that this show has, and it's just depressing that even the people who are supposed to be rewarding excellence in acting continue to overlook it.

3. Sons of Anarchy
Katey Sagal earned the hell out of her Golden Globe nod, but not one other person in the cast was deemed worthy? And the gritty biker cast as a whole wasn't up to snuff? We find that hard to believe. Very hard to believe. We were looking forward to seeing the whole cast gussied up and roaring down the red carpet for this occasion.

2. Terriers
We loved this short-lived show and we were hoping that had it been given some awards recognition, maybe the powers that be somewhere would resurrect it from the dead. It's too bad that this entertaining, funny, dark, twisted detective show didn't even hit the radar of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Guess they were too busy watching The Tourist over and over again.

1. Community
It seems impossible that this consistently funny network comedy is invisible to the voters. It has one of the best ensemble casts in comedy and not one of them was nominated. We know it is way easier to just keep checking off 30 Rock and The Office on the ballots, but sometimes we wish voters actually made an effort to watch a season from start to finish. From the paintball to the tent city to the zombie Halloween to the awesome stop-motion Christmas special, Community has something for everyone... except, apparently, fans of Hot in Cleveland.
