TWoP 10: Biggest Golden Globe and SAG Award Snubs

TWoP 10: Biggest Golden Globe and SAG Award Snubs

This week kicked off the start of awards season with nominations being announced by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for their Golden Globes and the Screen Actors Guild for their SAG Awards. And while there were some shockers in the television categories (Piper Perabo?! Hot in Cleveland?!!), there were also a lot of old standbys, meaning that many deserving shows and actors got left out in the cold. Here are the most egregious snubs from both awards bodies:

10. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
While Eric Stonesteet, Ed O'Neill and Ty Burrell all snagged nominations in various places, poor Jesse Tyler Ferguson was ignored. His neurotic Mitchell is pretty damned funny and a great counterpart to Stonestreet's Cam. If all the other guys were getting love, it seems odd that Jesse was the one left out.

9. Lost
The final season of Lost got no recognition anywhere? Not even a throwaway nod? Or a nomination for Michael Emerson or Terry O'Quinn? Sure the last episode made us want to throw things at the TV, but we thought they'd at least reward the actors and the show for its legendary status.

8. Breaking Bad
Bryan Cranston is incredible. There is no denying that. He deserves all the accolades he keeps getting. However, one man does not make the entire show. There's a bunch of talented people on there doing some tremendously well-executed work, and it is a shame that while he's acknowledged, the show and his amazing (and Emmy Award-winning) co-star Aaron Paul aren't.

7. John Noble, Fringe
Have you seen Noble playing his alternate reality self? Clearly the nominating committees for both SAG and the Globes haven't. If they had, there's no way they would have left Walter and Walternate off the list.

6. The Vampire Diaries
Yes, it is a CW show. Yes, it is a show about vampires. But the Golden Globes have nominated True Blood in the past, so it isn't so far fetched to think that this well-written, well-acted drama, which actually delivers with plot and action week after week, would get some love. And if the Globes thought that Piper Perabo (who is probably the worst thing about Covert Affairs) was worthy of acknowledgment, clearly they haven't seen Nina Dobrev in action. She's grown up over the course of the year and really nails both her sweet and evil characters. In fact, her ability to flip between them is mesmerizing.

5. The Big Bang Theory
We all love Sheldon Cooper, so we're happy that Jim Parsons got a Globes nod, but what about the rest of the cast? The show wouldn't be the same without Koothrapali, Leonard and Wolowitz. Even Penny has grown on us. It's truly a comedy where everyone pulls their weight, so it should have gotten at least a SAG ensemble nomination. At any rate, it was definitely more deserving than a lackluster season of The Office.

4. Friday Night Lights
Is it because it airs on DirecTV first? Did Connie Britton somehow offend someone at the SAG Awards? We're baffled as to how this show gets so completely and utterly neglected at the majority of these awards bodies. Few programs are able to hit the emotional resonance that this show has, and it's just depressing that even the people who are supposed to be rewarding excellence in acting continue to overlook it.

3. Sons of Anarchy
Katey Sagal earned the hell out of her Golden Globe nod, but not one other person in the cast was deemed worthy? And the gritty biker cast as a whole wasn't up to snuff? We find that hard to believe. Very hard to believe. We were looking forward to seeing the whole cast gussied up and roaring down the red carpet for this occasion.

2. Terriers
We loved this short-lived show and we were hoping that had it been given some awards recognition, maybe the powers that be somewhere would resurrect it from the dead. It's too bad that this entertaining, funny, dark, twisted detective show didn't even hit the radar of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association. Guess they were too busy watching The Tourist over and over again.

1. Community
It seems impossible that this consistently funny network comedy is invisible to the voters. It has one of the best ensemble casts in comedy and not one of them was nominated. We know it is way easier to just keep checking off 30 Rock and The Office on the ballots, but sometimes we wish voters actually made an effort to watch a season from start to finish. From the paintball to the tent city to the zombie Halloween to the awesome stop-motion Christmas special, Community has something for everyone... except, apparently, fans of Hot in Cleveland.

I agree 100% with your number 1 choice. "Community" is easily one of the best (certainly one of the funniest) comedies on TV. The lack of any nominations just proves that Golden Globe and SAG voters only vote for the familiar or the overly hyped.

Agreed, a thousand times over. IMO, Community is the funniest thing on network TV right now. I would watch every week for the "Troy & Abed in the Moooorrrrninnnng!" blip in the end credits alone. Cannot believe no one else is paying attention!

Quite frankly, I think "Community" is a combination of "too young" and "too hip" for SAG. It doesn't help that its two "known" actors aren't exactly respected by the acting community (Chevy Chase and Joel McHale). It also has never really felt like an "adult" comedy, such as "30 Rock" or "The Office" or even "Modern Family" (which could also explain "Big Bang Theory"'s snub). That doesn't explain "Hot in Cleveland," but...I don't know. I feel like its humor is lost on committees of mostly older people.

I was really shocked that Community wasn't nominated for anything from SAG. I mean, I wouldn't have been that surprised because Community is always overlooked for some unknown reason, except Hot in Cleavland was nominated, so there is really no excuse not to recognize Community as the great show it is.
I really don't get how no one watches Community. I was hooked after randomly watching 5 minutes of one episode last January. I caught up on the whole season and now my husband and I are the biggest fans. It is the BEST comedy on television. While 30 Rock and The Office have their great moments, I have never seen a sit-com so consistent from week-to-week as Community. There has never been a bad episode. How is that not even nomination material?

I completely agree with Breaking Bad, Terriers and Community. How The Walking Dead could get chosen for Best Drama over Breaking Bad is just astounding.

I probably shouldn't be too surprised that Community was overlooked as always, but it still stings every time. I'm wondering if that show will ever get the recognition it truly deserves.

Terriers not getting any nominations is just the final nail in that coffin. That show will be truly missed.

I'm going to need to watch The Soup to hear what Joel McHale has to say about the noms. It's a travesty that it gets no love anywhere except its fans.

As much as I love 30 Rock and The Office..they just aren't doing it for me anymore. Community consistently hits it out of the park week after week and the stop animation episode alone is reason enough for some sort of nod. I'm baffled that people seem to be oblivious to just how great Danny Pudi and Donald Glover are. Those two were snubbed in a big way!

Why is TWOP claiming puzzlement at how Community gets overlooked in favor of "checking off the boxes" with 30 Rock and The Office, when they clearly follow the same logic. Both 30 Rock and The Office are still recapped, even though the tenor of TWOPS one recaps clearly indicate the The Office as well past its prime, and those for 30 Rock suggest the show has plateaued. When TWOP shifts its resources, then it can go back to snarking about the color of some kettles...

I'm one of those freakshows who enjoys Hot in Cleveland, so I take issue with the notion that one cannot enjoy both HIC and Community! I agree that Community is one of the best things going right now and they certainly should've at least gotten an ensemble or show nomination. If they get no writing noms at Emmy time it'll really get ugly.

I totally agree about Nina Dobrev, but I just can't think of one scene in The Vampire Diaries that can top the season 2 finale of True Blood.

I love Community - Abed delivers pop culture references better than most characters of 30 Rock. Probably the reason why no one watches Community is because it's about college. Most shows that I've watched that center around college life tend to suck (or were awesome until a lead character enters college), and the idea of a comedy about college students probably turns them off.

Completely agree about the Vampire Diaries, if ANYTHING Nina deserves the best acting nod.

Missing from your list however, is Cougar Town. I don't think it deserves awards to be thrown at it, but I do think it has one of the best ensemble casts on tv today, and it would've been nice to have seen some love there.

Couldn't agree more about Terriers. Sons of Anarchy is a terrible phony show, but it does have good performances. A show I wish would get more attention is The Good Guys - incredibly funny, surprising, one of the best comedies on television. Can't understand why TWOP doesn't like it, either. (Sorry - the above comment posted before I finished typing. How could that even happen when ususally things here either double post or don't post at all?)

I, too, enjoy both HIC and Community. As for the list, I agree with JTF, TVD, Katey, and Community. Not so much for Terriers. I also agree with Amy C that Cougartown should've been nominated. I have to admit, I watch eagerly to see what self-deprecating phrase sits above the title each week!

FNL, Community, John Noble/Fringe , TBBT, Terriers, Cougar Town, SNUBBED. I was never one for Breaking Bad or Dexter(don't know why). I find Walt kind of whiny and unpleasant. And Dexter's more... dull than indifferent and sociopathic. TVD has semi-terrible acting? I think Nina Dobrev does a bad job. The rest of the cast is trying to make up for it but they just can't. Elena and Katherine are so terrible it's actually quite jarring. On a somewhat related note, I think TWoP should work with some fellow TV enthusiast sites and have a "web award" that actually(justifiably) celebrates great shows. None of these Award-snubbing nonsense

FNL! Connie! Also love Louanne Stephens as "Matt's" "Grandma." Great acting, great writing - layers of story lines. As a former teacher, I particularly love the reality of the challenges the kids are dealing with in their personal lives while trying to keep up academically and/or play football. Real life stuff. Politicians should watch this. Single parent families? Many of these kids don't have a functioning parent!

can't believe community is being ignored all the time. I mean come on, it's one of the shows that haven't rotten into some cliche stories and the characters in the show are hilarious! Senoir Chang, tory&Abed, pierce...There are so many good actors and actresses who put a lot of great efforts to make the great show and still the idiots don't recognize it. What a shame. Whatever, community rocks!

If Community can hang in there I think it will get a nomination at some point. Sometimes it just takes awhile. As for LOST? Why should it get a nomination for it's legendary status? The Globes and the Sags are for the best shows and actors out there this year, not a homage to shows that were once good at some time or another. The Globes are the best at picking out new shows and recognizing what's hot and the SAGS are all about actors that are respected by other actors.

The entire FRINGE cast deserved a SAG nomination. John Noble and Anna Torv led the way, but Jasika Nicole, Lance Reddick, and especially the elegantly understated Joshua Jackson (a long way from Charlie Conway and Pacey), gave what could be a standard sci-fi tale an emotional underpinning that was more affecting that most run-of-the-mill family dramas.

How about Damages? The excellent writing, direction, style, acting and the leads Glenn Close and Rose Byrne. Their mentor-mentee relationship is one of the best, if not, most interesting and intriguing one after the events of the past two seasons. And of course, The Tobin Family with Leonard Winstone. Drama, suspense, wit and characterization.

LOST! A lot of bomb episodes for the final season that could easily pound even a whole season of other series.

Agree! Community should be there, as should Parks & Rec. I don't get the HIC nominations, and though I will always love and watch The Office, it has experienced a creative dip the past year or so. FNL is always tragically overlooked.
I loved Lost start to finish, but even for those who didn't care for how it ended, there's no denying that show featured some of the most amazing performances on TV EVER. For Matthew Fox, Terry O'Quinn, Michael Emerson, and everyone else in the cast to be snubbed like that is just plain wrong.

And there's a reason the Vampire Diaries has such a huge following. I only watched it because of all the shows represented in the Emmy /Glee intro, she was the only one show (I don't count Lost) I didn't know. But I sure know it now.

Love Community and Fringe, two of the best written & acted shows out there. I don't understand the appeal of many cable shows like Damaged, Nurse Jackie etc. It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is one of the worst shows I've ever seen - on a par with Two and a Half Men - but it always seems to be included for its "hip" factor. Bleeeh Agree that The Office has been up and done, but Dwight's character has noticeably improved this year and brought the laughs. I really enjoyed the Christmas episode, think it was one of the best Office episodes I've seen in a while.
Anyway, I think I'll skip the GG this year. Don't care about most of the nominations. (And is SAG even televised??)

This is the accurate 301 Moved Permanently blog for anyone who wants to move out out around this issue. You request so more its virtually exhausting to argue with you (not that I real would want…HaHa). You definitely put a new whirl on a message thats been typed nearly for years. Nice block, but extraordinary!
