Change of Plans: Yet Another Shining Example Of Why Idol Alums Shouldn't Act

In case you missed it because you were watching anything else last night, or listening to your David Archuleta CD on repeat, Brooke White was in a made-for-TV movie on Fox. Let's just say she's not the next Jennifer Hudson. Given that she only has three facial expressions (confused, super-smiley and sad), I'm not entirely sure how she got this gig in the first place, but it probably has something to do with the fact that Randy Jackson was "soundtrack producer." That's the only explanation - that or that Walmart and P&G (the companies that "presented" this boring piece of dreckitude) felt that White would appeal to their audiences. Not really sure. I mean, this isn't quit the travesty that From Justin to Kelly was, but its pretty damned boring; a Lifetime movie that even Lifetime would have deemed dull and cloying.

The gist of the story is this: singer Brooke White (a.k.a. Sally) is married to a former Air Force pilot turned professor. They have a ginormous house and are very selfish and can't be bothered to do things like cook. However, Sally's bestie was in the Peace Corps and she and her husband adopted a bunch of kids from different parts of the world, Brangelina-style. And then the bestie up and dies in some sort of accident, and using her best judgment, Tessie (said BFF) ill advisedly put Sally down as one of the possible guardians for her children. Even though Brooke apparently hasn't seen her friend since their eldest daughter was a toddler and wasn't quite aware of the three other additions to the family.

Sally and Jason protest quite a bit, though because of Brooke's acting range this mostly comes across as her looking confused as to how children need things like food and education and whatnot. They desperately beg their social worker Dorothy (Phylicia Rashad, who really can do better than this crap) to find the kids a good home, but, of course, no one wants to take both the two teenagers and the younger kids. So it's a problem... until Dorothy deems Sally and Jason bad influences because they let their kids get in fights and steal cars and get arrested (as teens do), and then magically she finds a home for them. But then -- spoiler alert! -- by this point, these two formerly selfish jerks have realized that they have room in their lives for kids, even though it means turning down some cool-sounding, fighter-jet-flying job and a dumb tour for her music (which arguably is pretty terrible until one of the kids helps her make it sound less white, and then it's just grating).

There's the expected singing, which is probably what former Idol also-rans should stick to doing (preferably somewhere I don't have to hear it), but there's far less of it than I would have imagined, maybe only two or three songs in the entire two-hour mess. There's a cameo by stupid Randy Jackson, who looks like he showed up for five minutes (and given that there were so few songs, it's possible he was there for a total of ten). And there were bonus Walmart product placements, really the only explanation for the scene where Jason takes the boys to a NASCAR race. They get spiffy little hats that have Walmart's name on them, and they meet some car driver. Now this is a man who is frequently at an Air Force base. Wouldn't taking two kids to see fighter jets be cooler? If they let Brooke White on to the base for something, two kids would surely be allowed for a show-and-tell bonding experience. Oh, and they did that horrible thing where the protagonist feels the need to shout the title out during the course of the movie. Here, it was when Sally had a CHANGE OF HEART about having children in her life.

Basically, this is the plot of so many movies, including the recent Life As We Know It. The only remotely redeemable thing here was that there weren't any infants involved, so while every possible cliché about incompetent adults taking on child-rearing was employed, at least there were no baby poop or diaper jokes to contend with. That's probably the best thing I can say about this movie. I hope, for your sake, you did something better with your time.

I missed it but I'm sure Brooke did a nice job with it. Even if her acting is terrible, she is so lovely that just watching her onscreen for two hours would be just fine. :)

So sad you had such a horrible day & decided to write this horrible article! Just count to 10 next time! By the way, I LOVE Brooke & thought she did GREAT for her first acting attempt. Wasn't fond of the movie itself, but I hope Brooke gets many other chances at acting! The screen loves her!

Why how did you know that I was listening to David Archuleta's new CD The Other Side of Down? Its great! And I thought Brooke did well her first time out and is more photogenic than many actors on TV right now. We have forgotten what wholesome TV was all about .... I found it a refreshing change (of plans ;) )

Jason takes the boys to NASCAR because earlier they said they loved cars.

Somebody woke up on the wrong side of the bed! This movie, with it's 'Lifetime undertones' was just fine. I am not a Brooke fan because I don't watch Idol, and I think she did a pretty good job for her first time. The acting/movie was than this grumpy writer let on.

What's up with the writer's idea that Idols shouldn't act? It can't be justified when Jennifer Hudson got an Oscar (as you said). Brooke's acting was pretty natural to me. What do you expect from 'made for TV family movies'? Give her a break!

I don't know why anyone's taking this review seriously, considering the writer made three egregious errors in spelling, usage and mechanics in the opening paragraph. What's shocking is that she's the senior editor of this website yet never seems to have anyone proof her copy before it's uploaded to the site.
