Today, broadcasting legend Regis Philbin announced that he will retire from Live! With Regis and Kelly sometime later this year. Very sad for both fans of the show and those responsible for compiling clips for The Soup alike, but on to the new! Who will complain about diarrhea and mispronounce celebrities' names next to Kelly Ripa on Live! after Reege goes? Barring those who already have or are getting morning shows (which, sadly, excludes the best choice, Anderson Cooper), or people obligated to be out of NYC for significant portions of the year (which, even sadly-er, means no William Shatner or NPH), here are our bids:
Ricky Gervais
Yes, he just got called out for being too mean or whatever at the Golden Globes, but have you ever seen Regis interview anyone who isn't his BFF Don Rickles? He either has no idea who they are and only sort of tries to hide it, or he asks them some cranky question about their personal life or something random he doesn't understand about the crappy television show they're on, making them incredibly uncomfortable. In this setting, Gervais could be like the British, witty, lucid Regis, if you think about it. Plus, if he got the gig we might get to witness the glory of Live!'s new intern and roving reporter: Karl Pilkington.
Kathy Griffin
Sure, she's banned from the majority of talk shows, but if you just increase the delay on the live feed, she could be really, really funny. Well worth all the confused phone calls from our grandmothers about what it means to possess your own "gays" funny.
Greg Kinnear
I'm kind of serious with this one. He's been back on my radar lately because of all that Kennedys miniseries trouble, and considering that he hasn't had a hit film since 2006 and the fact that he's kind of done this before with Talk Soup back in the late '40s, he could be a likable, competent choice as a co-host. Particularly if he seethes with jealousy every time he has to interview a hugely successful movie star.
Jake Pavelka and Chris Harrison as One
At this point, The Bachelor pretty much hosts itself, and if I know Chris Harrison (and I think I do), being away from Jake Pavelka for any stretch of time is killing him. ABC should let Harrison out of his Bachelor gig and release him to their affiliates on Live!, where each morning he and Jake can tell Kelly all about the Best Friends Dinner they had the night before. It would also be kind of fun to watch Jake and Gelman try to out-smug each other from time to time.
Joshua Malina
I know I've said it before, but this guy's Twitter is one of the funniest things on the whole wide internet, and what's even better, he regularly bitches about his lack of decent career opportunities. The idea of solving this problem by giving him access to weary celebrities at 9 AM every morning is the stuff Season Passes are made of.
David Hasselhoff
He's wacky! And unemployed. And in this business of show, it's far better to be available than it is to be sober and coherent. Just ask Kathie Lee! Which brings me to...
Cody Gifford
Live! could stage the ultimate coup by stealing Kathie Lee's son Cody from his nepotism gig as in-house movie reviewer for the final hour of the Today Show and forcing him to laugh at Kelly's jokes and tell her how pretty and young and perfect she is as her new permanent co-host. It's a terrible idea, but it's almost too good of a jab at Kathie Lee for them to resist.

"....if he got the gig we might get to witness the glory of Live!'s new intern and roving reporter: Karl Pilkington..."
Sweet delight!!! I would totally quit my day job to watch this
micheal douglas should be considered. I think he will give the show what it needs to succeed
NY1's Pat Kiernan would be ideal.
Andy Cohen is my vote. He is such a great interviewer and is sooo funny
