Skins: Bored Now

Skins: Bored Now

Even if I hadn't watched the far superior British version of Skins, I still think I'd be underwhelmed by the MTV version of the series based solely on the premiere. The cast is filled with unlikeable stars who only say salacious things in an attempt to get a reaction from the viewing public. On a network that glamorizes teen pregnancy and random beach hookups, they're going to have to try a lot harder.

I was worried that the show would make a lot of changes from the UK version, such making everyone totally beautiful and giving them all fancy cars and basically turning this into MTV's Gossip Girl, and to their credit, they didn't. The show remains predominantly faithful to the original (at least in tone), but with a cast of kids who really can't act or sell this material with any sense of realism, the show just comes across as dull. They can't really show nudity and the cuss words are bleeped out, so the "edgy show" just seems bland and watered-down. What is the point if you aren't going to push the envelope? The commercials made it look good and trashy, but the content does not live up to the hype.

It really doesn't help that I can't stand the kid they found to play Tony. James Newman lacks the sort of cool demeanor that this character needs to have in order to pull off the crazy stuff he does. He's not really hot, so I find it weird that all the girls in choir would be gaga for him, or that his circle of friends would worship him. I just spent the entire episode wanting to smack him, while I found his British counterpart somewhat charming.

The girls, for the most part, seem okay, with the exception of Cadie. I loved Cassie from the original UK series; she had this sense of other-worldliness and a likably spacey quality. Here, the character is trying too hard to be quirky. I miss the ethereal, drug-addled trainwreck. But maybe in time these women will settle into their roles? Perhaps they, like the show itself, are trying to create a vibe that is impossible to truly pull off on a network that is going to sanitize many of the things that would make a show like this sexy in the first place.

I also have to wonder what's going to happen to this show in the long run. Will it be like the UK version, where they completely change the cast every two years? The constant cast refreshes did indeed work on MTV's Undressed, so it isn't completely implausible. But will anyone still be watching it at that point? I know I won't. I'd even rather tune in to the equally banal The Hard Times of RJ Berger the next time I want to hear nerdy teenagers talk about their penises. And assuming U.S. Skins sticks with UK storylines, there's some hard-hitting material coming down the pike that I'm not sure these characters are going to be able to pull it off. Maybe the producers should watch a few episodes of Degrassi or Pretty Little Liars to see how teen shows that tackle all kinds of issues actually do it, and do it well.

The only reason I enjoyed this version of Skins is because it reminded me how much I loved the BBC original cast. I had to take a step back and think about it- it wasn't any draw to this new show, it was fond memories of the 1st... aw... I miss Tony and Michelle, Chris and Sid. Sigh.

Word for word, shot for shot, exactly the same script as the FAR better UK version. I still can't believe it!
I do like Kadie and Tea though, the rest is just... underwhelming.

I completely agree. There's stuff in the UK version that you could never get away with state-side, so either they're going to water things down OR they (shocker) might have to be original. The only reason I watched the pilot was for the music.

I'm a huge fan of the original UK version, so watching sub-par American remake left me nothing but disappointed. I decided to watch it expecting to be underwhelmed, but it was honestly worse than I ever thought it could be.

Tony was short, annoying, and didn't have any of the conniving charm of UK Tony. Michelle was boring. Stanley didn't have the lovable charm that Sid did. But the two worst characters were Tea (they made Maxxie a girl! What, was having a gay guy too much for MTV to handle?) and Cadie (while Cassie was spacey and adorable, Cadie was psychotic and serious). Goodbye, US Skins, I'll pretend you're not around while I eagerly await UK Skins season five.

I agree...I knew it wouldn't live up to the UK version but I didn't expect it to be so blah. I also didn't expect it to follow the plot like of the UK version so closely. I mean seriously... I'm not going to watch a watered down version of every episode of a show I've already seen. C'mon MTV-you can do better.

Shameless, Being Human, Skins. Remaking shows from other countries, especially English-speaking countries, is the ultimate in lack of originality. Don't get me wrong, I don't think the UK version of Skins is the greatest thing ever. (I find Cassie to be annoying and self-involved. Never understood the fascination with the character or the actress, who is horrible. I also don't understand the outcry about replacing a gay character with a lesbian character. I guess women are less important to this "enlightened" audience, regardless of their sexuality.) I just think better things could be done with the air time. Write a new story. Come up with new characters and new ideas. Creativity. What an concept!

I'm a Brit and I hate Skins (the UK version, I don't know or care about the remake). Supposedly it's all about my generation, but there's not a single thing I like about it, or any of the characters. It's just so smug and obnoxious, I want to punt every single one of those bastards in the face.

Now that that's over with, can we talk about how awesome Shameless is? Remake or no, I'm totally in love with it. Naysayers and sceptics can fuck off.

I just watched the US version because apparently I hate myself and felt the need for punishment. It was painful. One of the things that bothered me the most was that they didn't bother to Americanize the language much. Just because both countries speak English doesn't mean the rhythm of the language is the same. Everything felt unnatural.

I read an interview with the creator of Skins, and he said that he wanted to do the first episode the same, to kind of show the new writers what it's like, and then turn it over to them and let them go in what direction they wanted to. He also said that he liked the audition of the actress playing Tea a lot, but he didn't have a role for her, so that's why he made Maxxie a lesbian. All that said, I still haven't watch the US pilot yet because I know it won't be as good!

If he wanted to show them how it's done and then let them write themselves, why not show them the exact same, but far better pilot he already had? What, did they have trouble understanding the accents, or is that too complicated as an idea? Srsly I get that you want to grab everyone's attention by introducing Tony as alpha male first, but this guy? A smirking little wannabe... that's less interesting than an episode about Pandora's mum.

I loved Skins UK 1st generation (not a huge fan of the 2nd generation and I don't think I am strong enough to endure a third generation) and I only saw the trailers of the US version and know I will not watch it. I also do not understand the need to americanize it... I think the main things, drugs, sex and teenagehood are pretty much the same here and in the US. Would people not watch Skins UK over there? Well in that case... they shouldn't watch a remake of it either!

Tone is up for grabs in what we do - what's the tone of the scene.
