Oscars 2011: The Liveblog!

Greetings, faithful awards show enthusiasts! Tonight we wrap up the 2011 awards season with the biggest, fanciest, loooongest of them all with a blow-by-blow liveblog of the Academy Awards. Mindy will start things off, swapping with Zach every half hour until the bitter end. Let's hope for some surprises, some wardrobe malfunctions and as many mercifully short acceptance speeches as humanly possible. Either way, we'd love to hear from you in the comments. Let's go!

8:30 - And the show begins with a super montage of all the nominated films. Nice to be reminded that there are other movies besides The King's Speech. That's not going to happen a lot tonight.

8:31 - And it's sketch time. Hathaway and Franco get incepted into former host Alec Baldwin's dreams... which are the Oscar-nominated movies. This isn't the most original show opening ever, but it's tried and true because it works. Hathaway in double eyepatches for the win.

8:35 - The dance of the brown duck? I take it back, this is going to be long night.

If you have the strength, read the rest of our liveblog here.

How To Train Your Dragon was the best animated film in many years, and way better than the tired Toy Story 3. It got robbed.

I agree with Kayla. Toy Story 3 wins over just for nostalgia, without it HTTYD is the best.

How to Train your Dragon was perfectly fun and you know, surprisingly mature and magical for a Dreamworks Picture but it hardly has the pathos or complexity of Toy Story 3.

You did not miss much, it was all ramble ramble ramble thank you to everyone I have ever worked with (except for that lights guy who made me so popular on youtube)... and of course the fact that he indeed forgot the names of both his wife and his daughter.
But all in all not the most memorable of speeches!

Did not know Zach Levi could sing. I'd push for a musical Chuck episode, except 1. Jeffster would be involved, and both members need to die horrifying deaths, and 2. The only realistic thing that could happen would be Casey pushing everybody in the head in the middle of their numbers.

That's a good point. I was bummed Hailee didn't get it, but sometimes early wins aren't good for a person or a career. Although Anna Paquin isn't doing too badly.

I'm kind of glad the King's Speech writer won, although I was rooting for Inception. Ain't no love Science Fiction.

I actually know this... but I will chose to believe what is funniest because as award shows go, this one has made me laugh very very few times. As in one. As in the time I decided a choked up Christian Bale forgot his family members' names, so that being up at 4 am european time would be worth it!

In response to the live blog-they supressed the clapping during the In Memoriam, which I am ok with...you could hear it in the sound mix during the song. It was a flawless stream of just the music & Celine. I'm fine with it, like the Lena Horne thing, it is sad to hear huge claps for the famous actors & nothing at all for some of the more technical people.

I will precede my comment saying that I love kids and I love singing. I have a kid and I sing to her all the time. I plan on going to every choir recital she ever gives. I have gone to random friends' second cousins choir recitals, that is how much I like singing kids.
But those Oscar kids... they were boring, their singing was fine, but urgh... so unnecessary! And clearly someone had told them to spazz around on stage as if they suffered Tourette's and then someon took it back and only about half the kids understood it... so bizarre.
Poor little moppets, not a good day for the most underdressed brooklyn kids ever!

Winning the party pool made watching til the end almost worth it (til TKS won BP, that is). Otherwise, a roomful of people agreed that Bale "went up" on his wife's name and didn't dare go for his daughter's. Franco was almost as bored as the rest of us. Blanchett's dress was a mess. Best picture montage was lame. And Billy Crystal's old forehead called, it wants to come home.
