BLOGS
Greetings, faithful awards show enthusiasts! Tonight we wrap up the 2011 awards season with the biggest, fanciest, loooongest of them all with a blow-by-blow liveblog of the Academy Awards. Mindy will start things off, swapping with Zach every half hour until the bitter end. Let's hope for some surprises, some wardrobe malfunctions and as many mercifully short acceptance speeches as humanly possible. Either way, we'd love to hear from you in the comments. Let's go!
8:30 - And the show begins with a super montage of all the nominated films. Nice to be reminded that there are other movies besides The King's Speech. That's not going to happen a lot tonight.
8:31 - And it's sketch time. Hathaway and Franco get incepted into former host Alec Baldwin's dreams... which are the Oscar-nominated movies. This isn't the most original show opening ever, but it's tried and true because it works. Hathaway in double eyepatches for the win.
8:35 - The dance of the brown duck? I take it back, this is going to be long night.
If you have the strength, read the rest of our liveblog here.

Franco looks like he'd rather be napping.
How To Train Your Dragon was the best animated film in many years, and way better than the tired Toy Story 3. It got robbed.
I agree with Kayla. Toy Story 3 wins over just for nostalgia, without it HTTYD is the best.
Am watching this streaming so can't close caption it and I swear I understood exactly 2 words in the entire Kirk Douglas speech... "I know"...
How to Train your Dragon was perfectly fun and you know, surprisingly mature and magical for a Dreamworks Picture but it hardly has the pathos or complexity of Toy Story 3.
I think the Mirren/Brand thing was a takeoff of what Mirren and Hugh Laurie did at the Emmys a few years ago http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4AO9Z4bAvMU
A surprise might be nice.
Holy shit, Christian Bale totally forgot what his wife's name actually is!
So far Sorkin's the only one who got played off. That makes me snicker.
matthew macwhatshisname looks like a drag queen ken doll after a tanning booth accident. scary!
I'm so glad that I'm such a nerd that my field in which I studied Sound Design actually gets represented. Thank goodness Inception won.
I know! I thought the same thing. LOL!!!!
Yeah James and Anne are stuck doing the same old tired stuff older hosts have to do, only James seems incredibly bored. Not above it, just bored. Like he's thinking about an English lit paper.
What the hell is Cate Blanchett wearing?!?!?
Didn't the Oscars on some other network than ABC less than ten years ago?
I'm so pissed off I missed one of my all-time faves (Christian Bale) get the award he so badly deserved!
Buying out a Hot Topic should not qualify as Best Costume Design. 3 times tonight the least deserving nominee won.
I'm sorry, but why the hell does Obama have to be in every entertainment event giving his opinion? Doesn't he have better thing to do? I'm sick of him.
You did not miss much, it was all ramble ramble ramble thank you to everyone I have ever worked with (except for that lights guy who made me so popular on youtube)... and of course the fact that he indeed forgot the names of both his wife and his daughter.
But all in all not the most memorable of speeches!
Short recap: He has a huge red beard and has no idea what his wife's name is.
I'm kind of bummed how bad this is, other than the nifty stage. I kind of want to see a movie in that theatre.
just because he didn't say their names doesn't mean he forgot them, jesus people...
OH GOD MAKE IT STOP.
Seriously... I don't think most of the Oscar audience gets Franco's humor. Why are they doing these weird sketches?
Breaking News - Oprah has big, big boobs.
I thought he forgot his wife's name at first too, but it looked like he was overcome with emotion. He was like, "My wife...*choke up*," not "My wife...who?"
i totally agree, franco is wasted on these people...
Did not know Zach Levi could sing. I'd push for a musical Chuck episode, except 1. Jeffster would be involved, and both members need to die horrifying deaths, and 2. The only realistic thing that could happen would be Casey pushing everybody in the head in the middle of their numbers.
Loved that one of the Coen brothers was shown texting during Oprah's entrance!
It’s like watching a bad car accident..You can’t look away..
I'm sure that's what happened! You people are too mean.
Anyway, Billy Crystal? Seriously? Why is he talking? Why is he still talking? Why is he still on stage? WHY ARE THEY MAKING THESE PRESENTERS TAKE FOREVER ON STAGE AND NOT LETTING WINNERS PROPERLY THANK PEOPLE?!?!?
Also, why didn't anyone think of making Robert Downey Jr. Host? I could spend hours listening to his nonsense, he's just a comedic genius. His delivery is flawless.
I didn't see that but that is the most awesome thing since Cristian Bale not knowing his wife's name. I HOPE the Coen Bros win or that True Grit wins SOMETHING. Jeez, never saw so much bullshit in my life.
Seriously! True Grit was such a well made film. Well cast, well directed, well... everything. I want them to win at least ONE award. That little girl needs to win, she was better than any of the supporting actress nominees.
Looks like a giant hole cut out for her boobs and then covered with mesh. But Kelly fucking Osborn just went on about her dress being a complete WORK OF ART. Really? It's a giant showcase for her boobs. Which btw aren't anywhere near Oprah size.
At first I thought Bale forgot her name too, but if you pay attention you'll see he hesitated because he started crying.
It's not that the winners don't deserve their wins. I don't know what's wrong. It's just too slow between the award bits.
Wow, Florence's dress is MUCH better than her red carpet dress.
That little girl is so adorable and did a great job. A few years ago I wanted Abigail Breslin to win, this year I was really pulling for Hailee Steinfeld-- she was amazing. Ah well, maybe it's better for them not to get everything so easily.
"If I rise" better win this best song category...
ARE YOU F'N SERIOUS? WHY ON EARTH DID RANDY NEWMAN WIN THIS ONE?
Seriously, Randy Newman's only won twice? He's nominated every goddamn year.
Iiii'mmmmm sorry -- 127 Hours just got robbed in the Best Song Category.
If they deserve it, they should get it and boy does she deserve it.
I was cheering for Hailee Steinfield too. She was great and I love that character.
I think Hathaway is better at this than Franco.
That's a good point. I was bummed Hailee didn't get it, but sometimes early wins aren't good for a person or a career. Although Anna Paquin isn't doing too badly.
I'm kind of glad the King's Speech writer won, although I was rooting for Inception. Ain't no love Science Fiction.
I actually know this... but I will chose to believe what is funniest because as award shows go, this one has made me laugh very very few times. As in one. As in the time I decided a choked up Christian Bale forgot his family members' names, so that being up at 4 am european time would be worth it!
I guess Celine will sing during the In Memoriam... Why are they singing a song about smiling? These people are dead. There's no tomorrow for them and they can't smile anymore!
Ha ha. Fair enough.
Gwyneth Paltrow singing? Why? Her voice is devoid of passion, much like her acting. It's a nice voice but it's empty.
Question... did they include Corey Haim in the Memoriam? I was too busy not paying attention. If they didn't... I HATE YOU OSCARS.
I was sooooo hoping that "127 Hours" would win the best song. Even so, Randy Newman's speech was funny.
It was nice of Katherine Bigelow to take a break from her Starfleet duties to make an appearance.
It's hard to tell... They cut away sometimes to show Celine singing, but the "In Memorium" video was still playing at the Oscars, so we at home missed a few.
Wow the guy that won from "The King's Speech" looks way too much like Jim Cameron.
Gwyneth was horrible. I didn't know we were supposed to be coming back around to liking her, and I refuse to do it. I don't mind her acting so much, but this singing thing she's doing these days is horrible horrible horrible. This is her worst "performance" yet.
I'm sorry but Michelle was BRILLIANT. Flawless. She didn't need to over-emote. Her performance was so beautiful in Blue Valentine, so perfectly balanced and real... she deserved that Oscar.
Why do you keep posting my comments as a reply to wibnix? seriously.
Anyway Sandra Bullock makes everything better. I love her so so so much.
Natalie Portman was relatively calm; considering some of the other nominees are just as emotional or more and they're not pregnant.
Also Sandy Bullock maybe the presenter of the night; or better than a lot of 'em.
Colin Firth, predictable win? Yes. But man it's so awesome to see him up there. I adore him. Such a fantastic actor. He's so emotional, I just want to smother him with kisses!
In response to the live blog-they supressed the clapping during the In Memoriam, which I am ok with...you could hear it in the sound mix during the song. It was a flawless stream of just the music & Celine. I'm fine with it, like the Lena Horne thing, it is sad to hear huge claps for the famous actors & nothing at all for some of the more technical people.
That ending was so cute! And I can't believe that it only went over by 12 minutes.
Anne Hathaway just made me yell at my TV to "shut up, already" -- how dare she? I love my TV!
Well, after tonight it's clear that Anne Hathaway is a "woo" girl. I never want to see her again in any screen ever.
I will precede my comment saying that I love kids and I love singing. I have a kid and I sing to her all the time. I plan on going to every choir recital she ever gives. I have gone to random friends' second cousins choir recitals, that is how much I like singing kids.
But those Oscar kids... they were boring, their singing was fine, but urgh... so unnecessary! And clearly someone had told them to spazz around on stage as if they suffered Tourette's and then someon took it back and only about half the kids understood it... so bizarre.
Poor little moppets, not a good day for the most underdressed brooklyn kids ever!
I liked Hathaway... She certainly exceeded my expectations, while Franco, who had higher ones, let them down.
man, I missed half the show because I was trying to think of the six degrees of separation between franco and scarlet johannsen and matt mcwhatever. and then I figured it out and was disappointed by the rest of the programs. the kids were not as horrible as I thought they would be though! they sang pretty well.
WTF is up with the "In Memoriam" snubs? They left out actors Harold Gould, Kenneth Mars, Corey Haim, Peter Graves and Barbara Billingsley. And probably a lot more. Shameful.
It's been an hour after the Oscars. I've been lying in a fetal position under my kitchen table trying to forget that dreadful show.
The horror. The horror...
Winning the party pool made watching til the end almost worth it (til TKS won BP, that is). Otherwise, a roomful of people agreed that Bale "went up" on his wife's name and didn't dare go for his daughter's. Franco was almost as bored as the rest of us. Blanchett's dress was a mess. Best picture montage was lame. And Billy Crystal's old forehead called, it wants to come home.
