Trying to Relive Those SNL Glory Days from '86-'93? Isn't That Special?

As a live sketch comedy show, SNL is defined by its charming set of recurring characters and its ability to turn topical humor into something timeless. By bringing out Dana Carvey, SNL showed us this week that those two things aren't actually all that different from each other. That is, most characters are defined by their time, and as Carvey points out to us in his monologue, his characters' (and his) time was from '86-'93. During that period, it was easy to enjoy Wayne's World or Church Lady. Public access channels were something anyone with a TV had a vague idea of. However, today, in the era of YouTube, these characters felt out of place even if they were talking about current stories. Of course, acting like 2011 didn't do very much to help most of the other sketches this week.

Worst: Wayne's World
The most depressing part of the show was the cold open. Suddenly seeing Mike Myers as a middle-aged Wayne is almost as sad as watching a total draining of the chemistry he and Carvey once had.

Best/Worst: Church Lady
Church Lady was probably the sketch people were most looking forward. I don't think there are any jokes here though. Just Carvey repeating the character's catch phrases to today's most sinful TV stars. Thank you, Jesus, for having the Bieb there to save the sketch.

Best: The Roommate
Is Justin Bieber trying to be the new Justin Timberlake? While he might end up as dated as Garth in twenty years, for now he seems to be able to make what could have been a fun but forgettable sketch into something memorable.

Best: Teen Crisis Hotline
Why are Alan Alda and Ice T impressions so funny?

Worst: Sports Bar
The only Super Bowl sketch of the night left me wondering where Bieber was to save the day.
