Saturday Night Live: Maybe They Should Have Just Given Zach Galifiankis All The Airtime

Why is it that this show has trouble doing funny sketches with actual comedians? Like the episode with Bryan Cranston, this one had a solid opening and a few entertaining moments, but it mostly fell flat. Even Zach bizarrely shaving his head just in time for the sign-off couldn't save an episode that fittingly closed with a sketch about the Titanic.

The Monologue
Now this, folks, is how you do an opening monologue. It was filled with self-deprecating humor, some random one-liners, sharp-witted racial jokes, pot references, impressions and an Annie parody. It's got it all.

Digital Short - Zach Looks for a New Assistant
The only other sketch that really completely worked for me. I doubt it is a coincidence that Zach was by himself with no other cast members in it. Frankly, I could watch Zach riff about Bieber with small children all day long.

The Talk
As a regular watcher of The Talk (I know, I'm alone in this one), I appreciated that they did this sketch, but it would have been better if Sharon was molesting Steven Tyler as she typically can't keep her hands off the male guests. But again, since I am the only one watching, did anyone else get it?

Catchphrase Comedy Tour
This sketch was largely painful and made me audibly groan, though that may have been the point. Regardless, the highlight was Zach's smile as he blasted his air horn. Well, that and special guests like "Boston Powers" and "Fur Coat Rhonda." As for Slappy Pappy? I'd rather watch Jeff Dunham.

March Madness Cold Open
The concept of this sketch made me chuckle, but the execution needed more follow through.

Scared Straight
Awful. As always. Even Zach in a Hannibal Lecter outfit couldn't save it.

Canadian Celebrity Scoop
Boooooooooooooooooooooooooring.

Titanic
Seriously. A sinking ship.

And here's the full episode in case you want to see the dead dog sketch that had a decent punchline but didn't know when to stop, the average Weekend Update (though kudos for putting up the Red Cross number for the folks in Japan) and the horror show of a Katy Perry lookalike that is Jessie J.
