Why can't high quality period piece TV shows just sort of materialize out of thin air, sort of like lolcats or CBS sitcoms?

Mad Men has been renewed for another season, and is getting production started, but Matt Weiner isn't completely on board just yet. It sounds like it's all about money, and Weiner's desire to keep Subway out of the ad agency's break room. Just remember, Weiner, if CBS can replace Charlie Sheen, AMC can do the same to you.

Just because a working class life isn't dangerous doesn't mean that Discovery won't try to exploit it. Case in point, the cable channel will be launching two new reality shows this summer, about and called Moonshiners and Mountain Men of Alaska. Are we really so confused by people who don't use the Internet that we need more shows about them?

Taking on his third war, Ken Burns is working on a new documentary about Vietnam. Like his other documentaries, this one will be near a 12 hours long and consist mostly of a voice over a screensaver of zoomed-in-on old photos.

FX didn't really surprise anyone by renewing Justified for another season, but that doesn't make anyone any less happy. Now if they could avoid pulling an AMC and make a third season of Archer official.

TNT, in its tradition of picking of shows that don't work on broadcast, is taking over a pilot from CBS called Gimme Shelter. Soon TNT will have to change its tag to "We know sloppy seconds."

For a series of short films about breast cancer Lifetime is giving directing duties over to five totally unqualified people, including Jennifer Aniston. After that Smart Water video, I am willing to believe that Aniston is just taking any work she is offered so long as it means that people are less likely to ask her about John Mayer.
