Gigolos: It's a Dirty Job... And a Dirty Show

This show isn't safe for work. This show probably isn't safe for a lot of places, but if you're looking to see some very blatant sex scenes and don't want to have to deal with the pesky stories on Camelot or The Borgias, then this just might be the program for you. It's a reality show that follows five guys working in Vegas as "escorts," and if you thought that maybe this show would go Bachelor-style and close the doors when the sexy stuff happened, you'd be wrong. Very, very wrong. There's a reason this show is on at 11 PM. In fact, it should probably be on Showtime After Dark... because it is way, way, way dirtier than anything that ever aired on Big Brother: After Dark.

I do think that Mike Rowe might have some competition because this could very well be the dirtiest job I've ever seen. They've got a pimp, though he's more of a coordinator who doles out jobs via text message from his limo. There's no fantastic hat and cane used to keep them in line, just random instructions over the phone. It's rather disappointing in some ways, like everything I learned about pimps from the movies was wrong. The pay rate seems to be a reasonable $550 dollars for two hours time, which includes a little date and chatting, and around five grand if you want one of the fellas for a whole weekend.

If you put aside the subject matter and the soft-core porn footage, this is really just another docu-reality series that deals with a workplace. It isn't really salacious -- I mean, they do show sex (a lot of it), but it isn't like they have soft lighting and cheesy music. It's more about why these guys ended up in this job (one is a single dad just trying to pay the bills) and how they work to impress a client at the end of the day. During the premiere episode, the four main guys have the task of welcoming a new gigolo into the fold, and also "auditioning" for a rich older lady who wants a date for a fancy gala event. Seeing the different approaches they take to "woo" this woman is sort of like watching different salesmen try and make their pitches. The only main difference here is that they are selling themselves instead of a product.

The thing that I can't quite get past is the fact that the clients are all totally willing to be filmed, in some cases in very compromising (and athletic!) positions. From a school teacher looking for a little fun while she's away from home to a couple who wants their gigolo to give the wife a really good birthday present while the husband watches, these folks happily smile at the cameras and explain why they want to pay for sex. And then we get to see them having that sex. Do they all have some sort of porn star fantasy that they're trying to live out? If I were that schoolteacher, I'd be more than a little worried that my boss would see this show.

For the majority of the first episode, there's just a lot of the guys showing off their bodies, working out at the gym, drinking and trying to pick up ladies (and it doesn't even count as overtime since they're off the clock), but I hope that as the show progresses, we get to learn a little more about what makes them tick - just so we don't feel guilty watching all of that sex footage.
