It's nice to watch a sitcom about a group of 30-somethingish friends that isn't trying to make everything about relationship dynamics and overt gender politics. Instead of these themes, which have over-saturated this season's broadcast networks' new comedies, Happy Endings seems perfectly content to have no specific agenda other than to let its actors be funny. This makes it an easy-to-watch sitcom about a group of friends who may be broad in their characterizations, but still strangely relatable.
The best part about this show are the people who are in it, who are given just enough history to give the sense that they might actually all be friends from college. This is only really all that dramatic at the beginning of the show, as Elisha Cuthbert leaves Zachary Knighton (the only two stars here who don't really have any comic pedigree, unless you count the cougar storyline on 24 and the mercifully short-lived Life on a Stick, respectfully) at the altar, forcing their previous long-term relationship and its nasty end into a classic TV cycle in which they spend an episode fighting before eventually letting their friendship win out so they can at least hang out with their friends. The rest of their friends include a cast of underrated but genuinely funny people from all over the place. Eliza Coupe and Damon Wayans, Jr. play the group's married couple, who are constantly struggling with their level of domesticity. Meanwhile, their single friends Casey Wilson and Adam Pally look poised to have plenty of B-level storyline dates.
As for the actual stories told each episode. Well, they're pretty much all tried-and-true sitcom plots, from the one-night stand that gets way too serious to the date who has a dealbreaker of a name. I might call this weak writing in another show, but here it seems like the writers are assuming I am already friends with these people. In this way, what might seem like a worn-out storyline now might feel surprisingly fresh if the show stays around long enough for me to get attached to the characters.
All told, the show is almost totally likable to a fault. Unlike some sitcoms this mid-season, the actors never seem to be struggling to get along with each other. The single-camera format isn't abused. There aren't any kind of forced themes over every episode or behind every character. No one seems to be having issues with manliness. Heck, even the jokes, which are rarely laugh-out-loud-worthy, are read so well that a smile and a nod come involuntarily (like the 24 reference in the third episode). It's sort of like watching the sixth season of Friends, but Chandler is actually gay.
The only thing that might put someone off Happy Endings would be the easy mistake of confusing the show's general pleasantness with an ephemeral blandness. It's a quality that will keep most people from talking about it too regularly and will keep anyone from watching it first if they have other stuff on their Hulu queue, but it has the possibility of becoming a long-lasting staple of Wednesday nights.

I never have high hopes for mid-season shows, but this one was quite good. I love love love Casey Wilson, mostly because she's utterly hilarious but also because she IS NORMAL-SIZED in a world of stick figures. So refreshing. Plus, she's beautiful and funny and can deliver a line like few can (the "I will physically FIGHT YOU" one was particularly wonderful. I sort of hope this show sticks around a bit, just for her.
I watched the pilot, and liked it well enough to stick around for the next episode. It's got potential, if the writing develops. At least the cast can act, which is more than I can say for a lot of other sitcoms. Although Damon Wayans is still a bit too In Living Color for my taste--he's still got too much Wayans and not enough of this new character. So far he's just "the husband" and "the token black guy"--nothing to make me forget he's a Wayans.
I'd stick around after Modern Family and Cougar Town for this. But at this point, I'd probably drift off if they stick something crappier [cough. . .Mr Sunshine] in between.
Really liked this show - was not expecting too either since I could only make it through one episoed of Mr. Sunshine. It's so awesome to have a gay character on TV who is hot, funny and straight acting - and who has the best one-liners. Looking forward to more.
I LOVED this show, and was dumbfounded by the fact that the pilot was actually well written, well acted, and made me laugh out loud. The whole thing had an "easy breezy" feel to it, didn't try too hard to win me over, and I just love all the characters. The only thing I did NOT like was Eliza's hair color, which is just a shallow nit-pick on my part. Hope this show sticks around!
The first episode made me laugh out loud multiple times. I didn't think the second one was as strong, mainly just because I found the storylines a little annoying. I do like many of the characters, though, particularly Penny and the Eliza Coupe character. I'll for sure give it another shot, though I'm not totally sold yet.
After having waited to finally watch this show from last May when its trailer first debuted, I'm happy to say that I wasn't disappointed. It was indeed breezy and a pleasure to watch. The cast have a great chemistry and I really feel like I've known these people for years. Just hoping people will give it a chance and it'll be renewed next season.
Am I the only one to disagree?
I totally agree with this. I thought it was very smart to bring in the over-the-top Gay Boyfriend character to underscore the fact that this show is [probably] not going that direction with their gay character. SO happy their not making their gay guy into a cartoon/stereotype.
I found it surprisingly enjoyable (and I had tuned in dreading another Perfect Couples fiasco). All of the characters were likable, even the runaway bride by the second episode. And I laughed quite a bit throughout.
I totally agree--at first I was puzzled as to why I was disconcerted by Penny--then realized it was because she had normal looking arms--not sticks or toned to death ones, just normal. When she told off the tanned toned bleach blonde in the gym I was hooked.
Jill, you do relize that is not Damon Wayans from In Living Color right. That's his son. And he as was fine to me. I think he was as developed as the rest of the characters. I loved his relationship with the gay friend. They played well of each other.
So isn't this like the umpteenth sitcom about a group of wacky, white friends? I'll pass, thank you very...wait, what? This one actually has a black guy in it? Well, now we're getting somewhere. More of this please.
STUPID, bad acting lame jokes same o'crap. 1 black guy one gay guy just the same ol' crap...they just need to run Modern Family longer.
This is such a GREAT show!I became a huge fan when it was still called 'Friends'
Good excuse for not being around...LOVE jersey shore and cannot wait for the new season :)
I thought it was hilarious! I loved loved loved FRIENDS too! Anyhow, does anyone know who the actress was that played the girl (Jackie) that Dave hooked up with and brought to Penny's birthday? She looks familiar and I can't find anything that credits her.
Happy Endings is one of the most poorly written shows I've seen in a long time. It is contrived, trying to hard to be funny with every line uttered, and it ends up not being funny at all. I'm 36 and don't believe for one second the characters are supposed to be in their 30s. They act like they are 12. It's stupid and I was surprised this show got saved from ABCs cuts. It is sad that networks have such a hard time making scripted shows. They must not be willing to pay the REALLY good creative writers, which is the real reason why there are so many "reality" shows and unfunny sitcoms. People would watch scripted shows more than reality shows if the networks would invest in really talented writers and not late night talk show interns who will work for ramen noodles salaries.
The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.
