Elton John did double duty as SNL host and musical guest this weekend, and while it was at times an unmitigated disaster, for the most part it was just dull, despite a few bright spots. One thing is for sure, though: Elton's forte is not stand-up, as his opening monologue was filled with predictable and corny jokes about being gay and not being able to get pregnant.
I generally like this Lawrence Welk sketch, but this week's was just more of what we've seen already. If you can't get enough of Kristen Wiig popping bubbles with her teeny hands, then yet another installment of this sketch is for you.
"Knights of the Realm." This one was a winner, from the fake BBC show about jars to the BBC reporter interrupting, to all of the UK's useless knights (including Sir-Mix-A-Lot) trying to figure out how to stop an attacking dragon. Best bits: the Spider-Man musical slams and Richard Branson cloning himself.
"Laser Cats: The Musical!" Secret shame: I love "Laser Cats," and frankly, this SNL Digital Short was more tolerable than the actual Spider-Man musical. Droz, FTW.
ESPN Classic, because who doesn't love a good joke about KY and going long with the shot put? Oh right, me.
It's not his fault that I'd reached my quota of Andy Samberg before this sketch aired, but it really fell flat for me. The Queen jamming and being saucy? I didn't like it the first time, and even less on repeat.
The "Silver Screen" Logo series is a sketch that I'd love to see again, with Dale Eberhart and the guest host as his love interest. It was filled with double entendres, weird little things like "my turtle goose bear" and had the decency to know when to end.
As for the gay cowboy sketch with the unicorn? The less said the better.
