Last night's Brothers & Sisters Season 5 finale may or not have been a series finale -- despite the show's sagging ratings, ABC is reportedly considering bringing the show back (possibly without Kitty, possibly not) for a shortened sixth season in the fall. But that's all rumor at this point, and considering the quality of the show over the last two seasons, I'm really hoping that final season is already behind us. The following are just a few reasons why I can't deal with a sixth season of this show.
I Can See the Annoying Emerging Storylines Already
The final scene of last night's episode was legitimately pleasant, with the whole family coming together at Sarah's wedding, dancing happily, free of hijinks and Walker drama. Can we just leave it at that before Sarah's new half-sister inevitably starts sleeping with Justin and we're asked to care about Tyler's feelings next season? Or before Kitty becomes Shelby from Steel Magnolias with her health-endangering pregnancy? Hasn't Sally Field already suffered enough indignity at the hands of this show?
Sarah is Irredeemable
This show's lazy writers have damaged every character on this show, but over the years Sarah has gotten the worst of it, constantly being reduced to a mere catalyst to some of the stupidest drama I've ever seen. When she's not insulting or neglecting her saintly fiancé (now husband) for no reason these days, she's picking some pointless fight or another with one of her family members or doing something ridiculous professionally. She's not even a character anymore so much as a pointless drama pawn. She's basically the Chuck Bass of Pasadena at this point, and I can't do it anymore.
They're Never Going to Stop Repeating Storylines
Showrunners have come and gone on this show, and every time a new one comes along we think they're going to stop de-Walkering people, quit with Nora's wacky love life, create plotlines that aren't based solely on stupid misunderstandings, or cease with the spontaneous new siblings, and every single time they resort back to doing all those things all over again. We got a surprise new sibling yesterday, for crying out loud. It's just never going to get better -- why go through this again?
Everyone Keeps Quitting
We lost Rob Lowe, we lost Holly (who I liked when she was evil; less so when they tried to make her sympathetic), we lost Rebecca, and now Kitty wants out and Rachel Griffiths sounds increasingly exasperated with her job. If the actors don't even want to be on this show why would I want to watch it? Also, at this rate, who is going to be left eventually? Just Ron Rifkin and Balthazar Getty sitting around in Walker Manor? That's not a show.
But Most Importantly, We Have Parenthood Now
I think most of us can agree that at this point Parenthood, despite its many, soapy faults, is filling the wacky family drama need that Brothers & Sisters serviced back when it was good. Do we really need two of these things, particularly when Brothers & Sisters has done so little to warrant any more hours of our attention? (Assuming Parenthood gets renewed, of course.)
