Americans seem to be much more uncomfortable with accents than I ever would've thought...
Rumors are a-flying that Cheryl Cole will be replaced as an X Factor judge by former Pussycat Dolls lead singer Nicole Scherzinger. Scherzinger would be joining Simon Cowell, Antonio "L.A." Reid and Paula Abdul on the singing competition's judging panel. Apparently the problem with Cole is that her accent is too thick for American audiences.
But it's a confirmed departure for Saffron Burrows -- she is leaving Fox's Bones spinoff The Finder. Burrows played the role with "a striking Cockney accent," which was "an issue for some fans." Execs are now re-imagining (and re-casting) the female lead.
I don't know about Saffron Burrows, but Cheryl Cole's accent just isn't that thick. And she's a good judge! Here's hoping she stays, and we don't have to deal with Nicole Scherzinger's 20 different accents because she decides to be "street" one day and from Barbados the next. (See her stellar performances as a judge of The Sing Off.)
In other, non-accent related news:
Lots of casting updates today: Frances Conroy and Alexis Breckenridge have both joined the cast of Ryan Murphy's FX project American Horror Story. Idris Elba will host and produce the weekly, hour-long Dramaville block on BBC America. The block will air the spy thriller The Hour, starring Dominic West, Romola Garai and Ben Wishaw first, the second season of Luther starring Idris Elba second, and the six-part crime drama Whitechapel, in which modern-day killers copycat infamous crimes of the past third. Christoph Sanders has been upped from guest star to series regular on ABC's upcoming Tim Allen comedy Last Man Standing. Beverly D'Angelo has been downgraded to a guest star on new NBC comedy Whitney. Charlie Sheen will not appear on Entourage this upcoming season. Rome actor Niko Nicotera has booked a recurring role on Sons of Anarchy. James Van Der Beek will guest star on an episode of Law & Order: CI this summer as a Sean Parker-esque character. And finally, Martin Short and Aidan Quinn have signed on for Weeds' seventh season.
Unless you live under a rock, you're probably aware that Scotty McCreery won American Idol last night. McCreery, staying predictably humble after his win, said he "left Garner as Scotty and [is] going back as Scotty," and has to "finish up [his] English class" before anything else, but after that, it's apparently "all about the songs." And runner-up Lauren Alaina said she didn't feel like she lost -- "I got second place! That's still winning!" If this gets any sweeter, I may vomit. In the mean time, fourth finalist Pia Toscano is already milking the AI cash cow, now at work on a "big, diva-sounding" album. And J.Lo doesn't know if she'll return next year. Since she has no career without the show, I'm going to say that when they offer her enough money, that'll be a yes.
Everyone in Italy hates the Jersey Shore cast. Absolutely everyone.
Behind the Music is returning this summer. Exciting, but unfortunately no one can ever top the brilliant Courtney Love episode. And I quote: "The two guys in rock with the best noses were Axl Rose and Kurt Cobain. And I certainly wasn't going to mate with Axl Rose."
The love-fest between Community and Cougar Town came full circle last night -- if you watch Community, you may have seen Cougar Town's Dan Byrd and Busy Philipps in the crowd on the season finale, "Modern Warfare: Part Two." Last night, Community -- more specifically, Abed -- repaid the favor, and he even wore his Dinner With Andre outfit. It was like that time he delivered a baby in the background during Community, but better.
Bravo is developing a new docu-series for Kara DioGuardi called "Kara," which will apparently be an inside look at the music business. Will there be pot brownies with Paula Abdul too?
In a completely out-of-left-field display of self-awareness, Kourtney Kardashian admits her family "sells their souls to E!," so sister Kim's wedding will be televised. Which should surprise absolutely no one.
