BLOGS
Now that we've survived the network upfront season and have had a couple of minutes to process the glut of new shows that will be coming in the fall and midseason, we've figured out what we're looking forward to. While there are plenty of freshman series that sound terrible, and a few that seem merely mediocre with the potential to improve, a select handful genuinely impressed us (or, at least their preview clips did). Of course, that doesn't mean that they'll all last a few season - in fact, some of these might be a hard sell - but for now, here's what we think shows the most promise:
10. The X-Factor
We've been hearing about this show forever and given how disappointing this season of American Idol has been, we're anxiously awaiting our dose of nonsensical Paula Abdul and critical Simon Cowell. We truly miss his bitterness.
9. Grimm
We're a bit leery about the fairy tale genre taking over TV next year, but this one looks to liven up the procedural format by having its lead be a descendent of the brothers Grimm, allowing him to see the supernatural evil that lurks around him. There's lots of red riding hoodies and big bad wolves, but don't confuse this with the ridiculously over-the-top Once Upon a Time.
8. Scandal
Shonda Rhimes is breaking out of her medical drama mold with this series about lawyers who help keep political controversies at bay. It's a big step for her and it doesn't even look like it'll have each character having semi-public sex with every other one. It's a different take on law and politics, so we're hoping for the next Good Wife here.
7. Person of Interest
The idea of Michael Emerson in another show from J.J. Abrams is definitely enough to make us overlook the presence of Jim Caviezel. And while this series about using data to stop crimes before they happen might end up being the next FlashForward or Rubicon, we're still full of hope at this point.
6. GCB (Good Christian Belles)
Southern women putting up a polite front while making catty comments towards each other in private? Sign us up. We really hope that there's a Kristen Chenoweth/Leslie Bibb hair-pulling showdown at some point. Maybe the season finale.
5. Awake
We can't help rooting for really complicated, high concept shows like this one about a man who responds to being in a terrible car accident with his wife and son by coming up with a bizarre coping mechanism. He begins to live two parallel lives, one in which he's alive and other in which his child is. It looks like a compelling cross between Memento meets Sliding Doors.
4. Smash
It's not the new Glee, so don't expect a whole host of pop songs on iTunes, but there is singing since it's about the making a Broadway musical. We're excited despite the presence of Debra Messing and Katherine McPhee, and that's saying a lot. But the concept is solid and having two women competing for the same Marilyn Monroe role reminds us a bit of A Chorus Line, so fingers crossed that this becomes the new haven for moonlighting Broadway stars.
3. Alcatraz
Before you get worried about JJ Abrams stretching himself too thin or about how his serial dramas often fizzle out, focus on the fact that Fox asked him to provide a detailed outline of where the story was heading in the long term. So, there's a plan in place and the show looks pretty cool, with prisoners from '60s Alcatraz disappearing into thin air, only to return in the present day.
2. Terra Nova
Dinosaurs and Steven Spielberg. We've been waiting for this show for over a year now, and while the delays had made us skeptical, the few minutes we saw this week of the action and CGI already has us on the edge of our seats. We expect big, Tyrannosaurus-sized things from this, so we hope it lives up to the hype.
1. Ringer
This Sarah Michelle Gellar vehicle almost didn't make it on the air because CBS didn't pick it up, but The CW swooped in and now it's the most adult show that fledgling network has ever attempted. It looks well written, twisted and dark, with Buffy living it up as two very different twin sisters. Consider this a ringing endorsement.

I am also very much looking forward to Smash (a show about a musical! About Marilyn!), and Awake. You got it wrong, though- in one reality his son's alive, in the other it's his WIFE. He is obviously alive in both of them, him being the main character and all. Looks cool. And while Scandal looks ok, I personally think Shonda should have helped out Off the Map instead.
Scandel has me interested, mainly for one of the reason's you mentioned. Shonda doing a non-medical show? it does have me curious.
I might check out GCB, despite Kristen Chenoweth being involved. Her voice just grates me.
I am totally stoked about Smash. Hopefully it won't turn out as horrible as Glee's second season, with its lame character development and crazy plot. And we get to see Jack Davenport, whom I loved in Coupling, and Debra Messing again on TV!
What about Up All Night? I'm dying to see Maya Rudolph and Christina Applegate again on TV, and I think this is the show that will redeem Will Arnett's career after Running Wilde.
I agree with your top 7, but have no interest in the others. Well, maybe Grimm, but definitely not another Shonda Rimes show - swapping doctors for lawyers isn't that exciting to me.
I'd add Up All Night to the list, and...that's about it.
My problem with Abrams isn't the stretching himself too thin thing; it's the "he sets up a really cool show, gets showrunners, gets bored and disappears" thing. You'd think "Alias" would have taught him a lesson when, while shooting "Lost", he realized they'd "lost Sydney". But apparently not.
I'm stoked about "Ringer". This show sounds so intriguing and so refreshing with so many cops and lawyers dominating tvland every year. Looking forward to Sarah Michelle Gellar's return to tv!
Funny 'cause Jim Caviezel is enough to make me overlook the presence of Michael Emerson.
I am really looking forward to the top 3! I think CBS is going to be kicking themselves in the ass. As they should. Ringer, Alcatraz, Terra Nova and the Hart of Dixie, is what I'm looking forward to the most. Oh, and GCB I will check out. Hope it's snarky, good fun.

Ringer looks the sort of show that's been done again.
And again and again.
Terra Nova looks ambitious, and Alcatraz & Grimm have show-runners\creators with interesting reps.
But Ringer? The sort of show has been done better before.
It's "Katharine" McPhee. With an A. Seriously, Angel, you need an editor so badly.
Jim Caviezel is just about the *only* reason I will watch "Person of Interest." I am excited he is doing series TV!! I hope it lasts....
As a huge Buffy fan I'm happy SMG is returning to television finally. But "The Ringer" would look awesome even without her. It is nice to see a non lawyer, doctor, cop, or zanie friend sitcom get a chance.
I am most excited for Ringer and Hart of Dixie. Good Christian Belles looked horrible but I'll probably check it out because of Kristen Chenoweth.
I wanted to love Ringer, but that full length trailer looks awful. There's just no getting around it. People seem to think just because it's SMG return to TV, that it'll be a new Buffy or something. So far, it doesn't look like it will be. I would love to be proven wrong.
You may want to read some of the pilot scripts. A couple of your opinions might change (like "the ridiculously over the top Once Upon a Time" far outshines Grim with both creativity and character)

I'm kind of looking forward to Hart of Dixie simply because it means Rachel Bilson will be on the screen again, and that woman is easy on the eyes.
What irks me about the fairy tale shows on both ABC and NBC is that those are the two networks that looked at, and passed, on doing a series based on the comic book Fables. While I think a Fables series would work better on a pay channel like HBO or Starz, I find myself truly annoyed that ABC and NBC passed over one of the best comics out there today in favor of what sound to be decidedly inferior products.
Glad you didn't put 'The Playboy Club' on that list.
I was really hoping "17th Precinct" would be picked up - a more-modern take on Randall Garret's Lord Darcy stories, complete with forensic sorceror. Ah well, perhaps NBC will put it on SyFy...
Every time I see the name of Simon Cowell's new show, though, it makes me wish that Peter David's reboot of the "X-Factor" comic had been turning it into a reality show where mutants would compete to get America to vote them into the X-Men. That, in my not-so-frakking-humble opinion, would have been really cool.
Person of interest basically sounds like Minority Report.
Even though I'm a whedonista, and absolutely love Buffy. Just because a show has SMG in it doesn't mean it's gonna be good.
The new shows that look good to me are Good Christian Belles, Grimm, Awake, Person of Interest, Ringer, and Pan Am. I am hoping that there could be some of the cast members of Buffy on the new show. Buffy was a great show by Joss Whedon. I wish that he could be one of the producers of Ringer.
Why are we looking for the next "The Good Wife" already? What's wrong with the current one (other than NOTHING)?
Number One on my list is what TWoP calls "over the top": Once Upon a Time. It is far and away the show I'm most looking forward to. Sounds somewhat like my favorite comic book: FABLES. I loved the brief snippet they've shown.
The best new show of the the year isn't on your list at all: AMC's HELL ON WHEELS.
I used to love the WB more than any network, and adding RINGER, HART OF DIXIE (which I think will be better than RINGER), and SECRET CIRCLE actually gives the network more of the kind of shows I like.
The pilot I was most looking forward to was 17th PRECINCT. Followed closely by LOCKE AND KEY.
Of TWoP's Top Ten, my reactions are:
1. Ringer - BUFFY is my all time favorite show, but this isn't BUFFY. Joss Whedon is nowhere to be found and it is writers, not actors, that drive a show. I'll definitely watch but I'm not confixent.
2. Terra Nova - the delays were due to the CGI, which they had to make perfect because they are going to sell it elsewhere.
3. Alcatraz - I'll watch, but will it be more like FRINGE or UNDERCOVERS?
4. Smash - IMO GLEE is an appalling show, so just having music doesn't impress me. I'll try it but it had better be better than GLEE, which is a bunch of songs holding together a half-assed script.
5. Awake - Sounds really interesting. Too bad it is a mid season show.
6. Good Christian Bitches - Sounds too much like DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES. Love Kristen Chenoweth, so I may give it a try on a very short leash, but I doubt I'll watch.
7. Person of Interest - Love Michael Emerson, and sometimes like Abrams's shows, so I'll take a peek. But it is CBS, the worst network there is.
8. Scandal - Nope. Won't even give it a try.
9. Grimm - I'll give it a try. Conflicts with FRINGE so it will be a DVR show. Not nearly as interested in this as ONCE UPON A TIME.
10. The X Factor - I'd rather have a root canal than watch this.

You're right. SMG does not automatically = good product. See: Scooby Doo.
I, too, always think of the comic book when I see "X-Factor." I don't think the lack of Cowell is what makes AI suck, so I don't think his presence will make this one a winner. I doubt that I'll bother.
I liked what I saw of the 'Pan Am' trailer. It was well-shot and we need another 'Mad Men'.
I don't know that Whedon and SMG left on good terms. I know she got a lot of blame for the end of Buffy from a lot of the other people associated with the show. I don't blame her for leaving, since she was the only one who really had the opportunity to do so at that time. I just don't see the two working together again.
Small typo in the review of "Awake" -- one universe has the wife dead/son alive, the other son dead/wife alive.

Ringer's pilot is really good. Lucky me, I got to screen it. It looks nothing like a CW show and is a great mystery with terrific acting from SMG and the rest of the cast. I can't wait to see the series; I hope they don't change too much of the pilot.
I'm tentatively excited about Ringer - it looks amazing but I might be biased by my Buffy-tinted glasses. I have no idea who the producers or writers are so I can't refer to their credentials. I guess we'll have to wait and see!

This idea that they are anything other than prisoners of war is ludicrous.If the Japanese of the Germans had shed their uniforms and wore Hawaiian shirts and bermuda shorts would that have made them any less the enemy or prisoner of war?
Forget about Buffy - Ringer is a whole different story line, not to be compared with Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Ringer is a thriller about Twin Sisters - one is evil and one is good. It's a brilliant show with a lot of twists and turns. Hope it continues for many seasons.

(There are other players worth considering out there, like the Sony Walkman X, but I hope this gives you enough info to make an informed decision of the Zune vs players other than the iPod line as well.)
The new Zune browser is surprisingly good, but not as good as the iPod's. It works well, but isn't as fast as Safari, and has a clunkier interface. If you occasionally plan on using the web browser that's not an issue, but if you're planning to browse the web alot from your PMP then the iPod's larger screen and better browser may be important.
If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.
This is getting a bit more subjective, but I much prefer the Zune Marketplace. The interface is colorful, has more flair, and some cool features like 'Mixview' that let you quickly see related albums, songs, or other users related to what you're listening to. Clicking on one of those will center on that item, and another set of "neighbors" will come into view, allowing you to navigate around exploring by similar artists, songs, or users. Speaking of users, the Zune "Social" is also great fun, letting you find others with shared tastes and becoming friends with them. You then can listen to a playlist created based on an amalgamation of what all your friends are listening to, which is also enjoyable. Those concerned with privacy will be relieved to know you can prevent the public from seeing your personal listening habits if you so choose.
Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.
