The 2011 Emmy nomination announcements are still a month away, but since the list of who submitted themselves for consideration in the acting categories has been released, we thought we'd check out this year's playing field. Some of it is great, if unlikely (our favorites from shows like Community and Justified), and some of it, as with every year, is incredibly laughable. Let's take a look at some of funniest and saddest submissions, shall we? (And yes, we know these things often have more to do with stroking talent egos than anybody's actual belief in their chances of being nominated, but that doesn't mean it's not hilarious to see people like Martin Henderson and Chace Crawford throwing their names in the ring against Steve Buscemi and Jon Hamm. You'll see.)
The Longest, Most Laughable Longshots in the Bunch
Chace Crawford, Gossip Girl, submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series despite being neither a lead nor that show being an award-worthy drama.
Robbie Jones, Hellcats, submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. See above, then multiply it by a thousand.
Martin Henderson, Off the Map, submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Jason Ritter, The Event, submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series. He was the captain of the Titanic, if you will. With bad facial hair to boot.
Jamie Campbell Bower, Camelot, submitted for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series.
Brooke Elliott, Drop Dead Diva, submitted for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series.
Ashley Tisdale, Hellcats, submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.
Natalie Zea, Justified, submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. Just because the show is outstanding doesn't mean you are.
Rutina Wesley, True Blood, submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series. It's not outstanding supporting over-actress, last time I checked.
Apparently, By Some Interpretations, Having Abs Counts as "Outstanding Acting"
Aly Michalka, Hellcats, submitted for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Ryan Kwanten, True Blood, submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Gilles Marini, Brothers & Sisters, submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series.
Who Cares if I'm the Worst Actress on a Bad, Cancelled Show? I'm Going for It Anyway!
Valerie Cruz, Off the Map, submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

The "Hey, It's Worth a Try" Strategy
Elizabeth Mitchell, V, submitted for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
Remember When Everyone Thought Katherine Heigl Was So Classless for Saying Her Grey's Writers Sucked Too Much for Her to Be Worthy of an Emmy? That was Horrible, But Maybe It's Not Such a Bad Thing to Consider Privately if You're on, Say, Private Practice
Kate Walsh, Amy Brenneman, Paul Adelstein, Caterina Scorsone, Brian Benben, Tim Daly, KaDee Strickland and Taye Diggs, all submitted yet again for another stellar season.
People Optimistic Enough to Think They Can Beat Chris Colfer
Glee's Kevin McHale, Cory Monteith, Chord Overstreet and Mark Salling, all submitted for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series alongside the great Kurt (and Burt) Hummel.
Some Small Children Who Are About to Learn a Very Early Lesson About Losing
Coy Stewart (Are We There Yet?), Isiah Montgomery (Men of a Certain Age), Ryan Wynott (The Cape), Teala Dunn (Are We There Yet?), Lily Pilblad (Lights Out), Savannah Paige Rae (Parenthood), Kwesi Boakye (Men of a Certain Age), Tyree Brown (Parenthood), Ethan Cutkosky (Shameless), Braeden Lemasters (Men of a Certain Age). For the record, Psych is absolutely Emmy-worthy, and so is, specifically, Dule Hill. Rest of this list, though--Ha!
Exactly how many episodes of 30 Rock has Cerie been in anyway? I truly had no idea she was on the show anymore; literally, your mention of her reminded me she's on the show.
Tara on True Blood does certainly take over-acting to a new level. But I actually think Jason Stackhouse is a pretty good actor. Even without the abs, he's pretty fucking good.
I actually think Drop Dead Diva is a good show. It's longshot, yeah, but Brooke Elliot is really good on the show.
Glee is way overrated, and Kurt is one of the most overrated characters on the show. I don't get why people rave about him. i'm blind, I suppose.
As for Chase Crawford, yeah. He's one of the worst actors on the show, though among the prettiest. And he's done NOTHING this season; it's a joke.
I'm just gonna throw this out there, and I know it's pathetic to even admit that I watched the show, but I was actually pleasantly surprised by Ashley Tisdale's acting on Hellcats. She was the best thing about that show. I actually kind of loved her. But no, she should not be nominated for an Emmy.
What a mean spirited article.
Who is anyone to say who should and should not submit themselves if they meet the requirements? Some of these people might have done it for shiggles since they may never even have another acting job ever. Honestly, I actually find it sad to ridicule people for having a dream, no matter how far fetched it may seem.
I enjoy snark as much as anyone, but it's depressing the world is becoming so jaded.
You know, for such an extensive article you missed Charice Pepengco's submission for Glee. That was the funniest moment while reading the Emmy ballot for me. (Besides the WTF "Since when are Gossip Girl and Hellcats drama?" moment, of course)
Leave Spartacus alone....
ditto to Rizzoli & Isles
Wait is guilty pleasure an emmy category because if it is these two would win for me...hands down.
This "article" is the very reason I stopped visiting Television Without Pity. I love your snark, but this is just entirely too mean spirited. Your writers, especially this girl, and this article, are just so extremely and unnecessarily mean. This is written in such a way that it doesn't make me laugh, it makes me feel bad for these people. Go check out TVLine.com, ListsAndGrades.com and EW.com and please learn how it's done.
And not to be a Parenthood apologist, but Savannah Paige Rae is great on that show, as is everyone. She's probably one of the best child actors on television.
Off course this site would be gaga for Chris Colfer
Hellcats is way over the top, but Ashley Tisdale is actually quite good. Not going to win, but not worth mocking.
Ditto Kristen's - I think Dule Hill is great on Psych. Not all comedies are the same. I can appreciate a range from Psych to Community to Bugs Bunny. Can you?
Psych is an insanely funny, well written and acted show. If they're passing out Emmys for being entertaining, the people on this show certainly deserve one.
I enjoy Drop Dead Diva, and Brooke Elliot is adorable on it. Her submission is hardly laughable. She carries that entire show.
I also enjoy Psych, R&I - though I agree that I don't know how they spun 8 - 10 nominations out of them.
Kurt is overrated. Chris Colfer defines overacting.
Wow, Mindy, when I thought you couldn't get meaner or hate TV or your job any more...
Wow, so Chris I-Have-One-Expression-Twisting-My-Mouth-Like-I-am-In-Pain Colfer is Emmy-worthy while Psych is just a silly show?
Re:Glee overall: Some of us love our soap boxes where they belong - in the garbage.
The way these things work, I can see Psych getting ignored for years (it does air on USA)... but I absolutely wouldn't put in the "are you kidding me!?" category. It's really freakin' funny, and still manages episodes/moments with gravitas incredibly well.
Dude, calm down. Mindy said Chris Colfer's going to win, not that he deserves to.
I absolutely love Psych, but I couldn't name 10 recurring characters if you paid me. The flood of submissions really does smack of stuffing the ballot box. And I'll watch any USA show I can find, but unless you're HBO, network shows are still considered "better" than cable.
Do I want Psych to win? Yes.
Do they have a chance? No.
I didn't watch Psych for the first 3 seasons, but gave it a shot and now I think it's actually a pretty darn good show, and the acting is solid.
Never really got into Glee this year, but I'll assume Colfer must have been much improved on the first season then.
To clarify: I didn't think he was bad exactly, but to be apparently so much better than the others I assume he must have stepped up or they stepped it down a lot.
Dreams???? More like delusions. I get it that people have dreams of making it big or actually being an actor and all that - but you just have to know when you are appearing in a crap show.
The thing about Drop Dead Diva and Brooke Elliot is that she does have two different roles on it as pre-death Jane and post-death Jane/Deb. She transforms mostly through her acting, with just a touch of wardrobe. Her submission, while a long shot, is not that outrageous.
Also, strong emotions, like here, get the page views.
lol really? charice?
she'd win if it was a Filipino awards show. The "actors" here love complimenting and awarding each other
The difference between Rutina Wesley and Ryan Kwanten and all those others is, that Rutina and Ryan are actually on a good show and very talented actors.
Though why ANYONE would watch V and nominate Elisabeth Mitchell and not Morena Baccarin is beyond me. Morena was the only outstanding actress and only memorable thing about that dull, bland show. Elisabeth was, for her own standards and for TV standards in general, very mediocre.
If there were a child actor Emmy category, Savannah Rae Paige would totally belong there - she's terrific on Parenthood. And I think Rutina Wesley and Ryan Kwanten are certainly as good as Anna Paquin (although the standout on True Blood is and has been Nelsan Ellis).
Wow, what a mean-spirited, snobby article. It's the equivalent of a bunch of hipsters laughing at the "uncool" people who think they're "good enough" to hang out at the club they frequent. Honestly, just because they're probably not going to get nominated doesn't mean that they don't deserve it or that they shouldn't try.
For the record, Brooke Elliot is amazing in "Drop Dead Diva" and while her nomination might be a long-shot, it certainly isn't laughable. "Psych" and "White Collar" had great seasons last season. You may not have the ability to see beyond Ryan Kwanten's abs, but he's actually a good actor who brings layers to Jason Stackhouse that aren't in the books.
Funny article. I actually think that Ryan (Jason Stackhouse on "True Blood) is a good actor. So him submitting himself isn't really a joke to me. My favorite 'this is sad' nomination is Chace Crawford for Outstanding Lead Actor. I started laughing before I even finished typing the previous sentence. Actually, when I started typing "Chace Crawford", I just burst out laughing. I can't stop laughing.
Agreed on most except for the ones from True Blood. Maybe it's just the Trubie in me, but Rutina and Ryan are good - some of their lines do sound like they were lifted from a bad suspense thriller, but they aren't bad actors, or as bad as the entire Hellcats cast.
And Charice's submission - LOL. Her "acting" skills might fly in the Philippines and garner her a buttload of awards, though, just because she's on Glee. Apparently, singing with weird hand movements can be considered acting.
Could not agree with you more about Spartacus. Everything else on this list seems like fair game to me.
Honestly if the Emmys would just copy the Critic's Choice nominees I would be the happiest person alive.
So here we have a list of actors who were submitted but shouldn't have been. In a month we'll have a list of actors who were nominated but shouldn't have been. And that will be followed by a list of people who won but shouldn't have.
It seems to me there's a pretty strong incentive for actors and producers to just throw shit at the wall.
Wow! You must be one of those people who HATE the world with quite a chip on your shoulder... What's the matter? Mommy didn't love you enough so you take it out on hardworking actors who you think "aren't good enough"? Seriously twisted. This article (or whatever your calling it) is in very Bad Taste and I don't care if you were dropped on your head as a baby or your a wanna be actress who never made it so you decided to write mean and nasty things but you need to write a retraction. It's just the right thing to do.
Absolutely agree about Dule Hill. And I've never understood what some of the bloggers at TWOP have against Psych - it's a damned funny show.
Nathan -
Maybe not actors and producers, but this site sure seems to have no problem with that incentive.
People need to calm down. Remember what site you are visiting? I come here for articles like this. Even if I don't agree 100% with the author I can still get a laugh out of it. Lighten up!
Mindy Monez an actress? Have you seen a picture of her? Wow.. she has behind the scenes cheap shot artist written all over her. There is no snark there is only fan-wanking over the next big GSB actor.
I agree with most of these (although not the mean tone) but I could not disagree more with you including Brooke Elliot on that list. It is laughable because her show is on Lifetime or due to her actual acting? Because if it's due to her actual acting then you've obviously never seen it. She absolutely knocks it out of the park every episode. If anything, I would be surprised to learn that she DIDN'T submit for an Emmy.
Agreed. Tisdale is a PRO.
Brooke Elliot is awesome in Drop Dead Diva.
I never watched Hellcats but it was a drama?
And don't hate on Psych. I love Psych and I plan on marrying Gus when I grew up. The fact that he is a fictional character may present a problem.
Lately, whenever there are "articles" like this, I'm left with the feeling that the "reviewers" writing them haven't actually seen even a minute of most of the shows on the lists but are simply licking a finger, sticking it in the wind, and seeing how the wind blows.
Neither useful nor amusing.
I know what site I'm visiting. But it's Television without Pity, not Television without a SOUL. This site used to make fun of shows while still having respect for the genre but sadly, that's no longer the case.
Why so much hate for Psych? 10 acting nominations may be on the heavy side, but it's an awesome show and well worth watching. I could definitely see Dule Hill getting a nomination. That's not even in the same category as the people from Hellcats being submitted.
And for the other USA shows, they might as well submit. Piper Perabo got nominated for a freaking Golden Globe for Covert Affairs! She's easily the least interesting thing about the worst (IMO) USA show, but she still got the nomination.
Okay, I'm going to jump on the defense of Ryan and Rutina bandwagon. First of all, Rutina Wesley is a Julliard-trained classical actress, who plays one of the few characters on the show who is realistically having a breakdown over the crazy sh*t she's experienced in her lifetime and over the course of the last three months (that's right, each season has been like a month in real time). Ryan Kwanten not only is nothing like his character in real life, but has given some of the most articulate and intelligent explanations of motivations that I've seen any actor give, let alone of a character who appears to have nothing going on between his ears. While I believe his talent was wasted a bit this past season, his performance of possibly the stupidest man on earth has always been intelligently comedic and appropriately disturbing.
That said, I did get a huge belly laugh over the very pretty Chace Crawford, who is neither an outstanding nor a lead actor in a barely dramatic series.
"Lately, whenever there are "articles" like this, I'm left with the feeling that the "reviewers" writing them haven't actually seen even a minute of most of the shows on the lists but are simply licking a finger, sticking it in the wind, and seeing how the wind blows"
I agree Brad. A lot of times it does seem like the main editors will make these comments about shows that sound like they maybe saw 5 minutes and just jumped on the first thing they could make fun of.
I don't understand the Psych hate either. I ma catching up on the first two seasons now, and it is funny stuff. The pop culture references alone make me wonder why it is not being recapped.
I've never been a fan of people falling back on the "it's the name of the website" argument for really nasty comments, but was this article really that nasty? For goodness' sake she's making fun of Emmy submissions by people who make a good living doing something a million other people would kill to do. I'm sure they can handle the criticism. I doubt anyone at "Psych" or "Drop Dead Diva" is going to be crying into their coffee over this.
Is the point of this article just to insult people?
Word, Jamie--Xanax, anyone? CHILLAX, people--"White Collar" & "Royal Pains" are my guilty pleasures, but am not seeing THAT MANY noms--do they even have that many characters?
I know this has been said multiple times before, but I just cannot comprehend... TWoP, you clearly detest shows like Private Practice and Glee, so why do you recap them, but not a show like Community?
FINALLY-a comment worth posting in reply to this article....walk the walk with the community love!!!!
ps some of you may want to look up "without pity" in the dictionary :-) !!!
Question- have you even seen Drop Dead Diva??? I'm guessing not, because Brooke Elliott is actually very good on the show.
anyone have the official list? PLEASE!!!!
I love Psych so I really hope that out of their ten submissions, they end up with one or two nominations.
One thing to keep in mind is that acting submissions do not have to be for leads or supporting actors (I'm assuming they nominated the actors who play Shawn, Gus, Henry, Juliet, and Lassiter which accounts for half of their ten submissions). There is a category for guest stars and Psych tends to have good ones so they probaby submitted the big names.
I have mixed feelings about Hayley Hasselhoff's submission because while I LOVED Huge, she was not the strongest actress on the show. I hope some of the other people involved with the show (both cast and crew) submitted their names even though it's a long shot that they would win.
Really? This site is no different in tone than it ever was. The difference? They're picking on your favorite now. (I knew the True Blood comments would inspire a bunch of pearl-clutching replies). When people talk about how this site has gone down hill, I wonder where which orifice they have their heads inserted in. This site has always had mean-spirited, nasty treatment of people. Alli/Linda was the worst, but she's (thankfully) gone. One thing you can be thankful of is that now you can actually have a negative reaction w/o some bitchy, over-sensitive mod banning you. The only real changes to this site are navigation (horrible) and the fact that there is SOME forum for you to actually say, "Hey, this is shit." (Which is awesome).
I have to say that I disagree with Nemesis. I have found the general tone of the site has completely changed. I read articles about shows I like and shows I want to laugh at. The site was creatively bitchy and I liked it when the writer had at least some interest in the show they were writing about. They would enjoy the good stuff and call the show on the bullshit it might be pulling. Now I find across the board that the writers either hate or have no interest in what they are covering. That's where it is nasty instead of "without pity". To me "without pity" means honest to a fault not bitchy without a clue.
Brooke Elliot is a great actress. Come on.
And I agree with everyone who said this article is mean spirited. If you name a category "You're Still on That Show? Who Knew?", that's not snarky, that's disrespectful.
Man, this website is just like those great TV shows who went on for too long: it has gone off the rails.
I agree!!!! Psych is one of THE best shows on T.V. (so good that it got COPIED) and Dule Hill is hilarious!
I only scanned the comments, so stop me if this has been said....I find myself wishing for the days in the 90s when Friends and Frasier won every dang thing. I still resent certain shows winning ALL the time, but some of these nominees make me realize why there is a lot of quality programming on cable.
I 100% agree with everyone who has posted about how fabulous, funny and "fresh" PSYCH is!
I don't care if they pick on "my favorite" (for the record, I don't give a rip about True Blood), I care that the "picking" isn't fun anymore. Like someone above said, the critique used to be someone who somewhat liked the show but would still nitpick it when it did something boneheaded. And yeah, I also agree that the writers either hate what they're watching or give a review on something they'd never seen before, don't know what's going on and have no interest in finding out. Is it so hard to find writers who seem to LIKE tv?
I don't mind the writers here being mean. Some of the funniest pop culture commentators are absolutely brutal.
What I mind, though, is the hypocrisy. Imagine if someone insisted that a terrific actress had no business submitting her name for Emmy consideration, and offered no reason why she was undeserving, beyond the hotness of her body. (For example: "Does Christina Hendricks think she deserves an Emmy for her giant boobs?") The TWOP staff would immediately label a comment like that as sexist.
Yet, the comment about Ryan Kwanten is basically the same thing, except it's about a man. A man who, over the past three seasons of True Blood, has increasingly earned respect from TV critics for playing a difficult role believably, and switching easily from silly humor to angst, and then back to silly humor again.
Army Wives may not be an Emmy worthy show. That's true. But I have to say Catherine Bell and Terry Serpico did an amazing job this season.
I agree with the previous posters - You have a huge hate on for Psych. You are not recapping great shows like Community and Parenthood and then you trash actors and actors who have a better job than you! Beyond rude!
Mindy, is that you? But seriously, the site HAS changed. When Sars, Wing Chung, and Glark were in charge, there was an air of "I tease because I love." I was obsessed with 24 in college, but TWoP snarked the shit out of it and it was still hilarious and I loved it. But now (not the forums or the recaps, but these front page "articles" by Mindy, Sofia, etc.) I get the feeling that it's gone beyond cynicism and into mean-spirited "I hate TV, I hate everything on it" territory and it's really, really unappealing.
Adding to the love for the actors on 'Psych.' In fact, the cast is so strong that they sometimes redeem the show from some bad writing choices.
I'm obviously from a much more horrifically mean, cruel world than some others here, as I only found this article a bit snarky towards a show's emmy chances.
....And certainly not "I hate everything and everyone who ever existed or will exist, all the shows mentioned here are the worst things in the world ever invented and I damn them all and who starred in them to hell mwa ha ha haaaa *twirls evil moustache *." etc. etc.
Saying that, I like Psych and Rizzoli & Isles, and think they're underrated shows, but seriously, 8-10 acting nominations?
(btw, to any actors reading this who are now traumatised by my harshly cruel words, I apologise).
Gotta agree with most of the people here - this was a bad article, and honestly beyond the tone, you're not even right. I mean, Hayley Hasselhoff may not have a chance in hell of being nominated of winning, but Huge was a damn good shwo and she was damn good on it, and it's certianly not laughable that she would submit a nomination. it's shit like this that makes the site sound like it's run by catty assholes instead of thoughtfully snarky and irreverent writers. You're trying to substitute being harsh for being funny. It's not working.
I think Natalie Zea does an excellent job on Justified. Sure, she's a long shot, but why not submit? She had material this year and did a good job with it.
What a horribly mean spirited article! You do realize that these actors are not sitting there saying "I can beat this person".. There are people and adviser's telling them that they should nominate themselves. I am upset that I even read this entire article. You are obviously very rude and inconsiderate of the fact that these people (especially in Glee) are working their ASSES off, putting in 16 hour days EVERY DAY! then on their hiatus, they go on a music tour. Every actor that you mentioned deserves to be recognized, maybe not this year, but that should not stop them from putting their names in. Your very disrespectful!
I would just like to know how long Mindy Monez or any of the other strongly opinionated people on this message board have been acting? Or studied the art of acting? Because unless you are a trained performer, I don't see where you have the credentials to be critizing other people's acting skills. Guess what? They are on nationally televised shows watched by millions of people each week. You are sitting at your computer writing nasty comments about them. Think about it.
Hello there, just became aware of your blog through Google, and found that it is truly informative. I’m going to watch out for brussels. I’ll appreciate if you continue this in future. A lot of people will be benefited from your writing. Cheers!
