Unless you've been living under a Glee-proof rock, you may have heard that Chord Overstreet's Sam Evans has been cut from the show's next season. (If you do live under a Glee-proof rock by the way, where can we find one?) At the same time, Darren Criss' Blaine and Harry Shum Jr's Mike Chang have been moved up to series regulars. Although it's nice that Blaine's now a regular, he doesn't go to McKinley (at least, not yet) and Kurt doesn't go to Dalton, so we're not sure how that makes sense. And we love Mike Chang, but he doesn't actually do much of anything. We were just getting to know Sam and we were happy with what we were seeing, but considering all of Glee's other poor choices, we can't say we're surprised by the decision. Here are five reasons it was (yet another) bad idea on Ryan Murphy & Co.'s part:
1) Mercedes Was Finally Getting a Love Interest/Storyline
We love Mercedes and all her diva-fueled shenanigans, but the whole "I'm sassy and I hate everyone" shtick was getting old, especially when we're aware of her dramatic chops (see "Grilled Cheesus"). Mercedes had become another talking head, insulting Rachel once or twice every episode and belting out the big note at the end of every song. So the most obvious reason Sam should stay on the show? Mercedes. She deserves it, and we were far more excited about that relationship than any other on the show. Also -- Sam deserves to date someone other than Santana, who was using him, and the awful, insufferable Quinn Fabray.
2) Sam Was One of the Only Male Characters With Any Depth
Mercedes and a few other female characters are pretty one-note, but it's mostly the guys that have nothing to do. Remember when Finn had a personality and how he freaked out when he found out Quinn's baby was Puck's and he was seriously uncomfortable with Kurt's sexuality. There was potential there. Then there wasn't. Remember when Puck yelled at Mr. Schue, revealing his belief that no one cared about him? Now he's just Token Hottie. Remember when Artie had dreams of walking? That lasted about one episode. But Sam had a lot of things going on besides his relationship with Mercedes. There was his realistic storyline about the recession affecting his family. (We know -- realism? On Glee? Not possible. But it happened!) He had to take care of his siblings and he lived in a motel and he was too embarrassed to tell the glee club. He also wasn't cool with being used by Santana, he had insecurities around his body, and...
3) He Was Genuinely Funny
And not exactly ha-ha funny -- he was weird funny, which is sometimes the best kind. He was like a male version of Brittany -- attractive and seemingly normal, but actually really strange once he opened his (quite large) mouth. Remember his impressions of James Earl Jones and Sean Connery that made Santana incredibly uncomfortable? Or his obsession with Avatar? Sam was a good-looking jock that all the gals were after, but he was also a socially awkward nerd and wasn't ashamed about it, which made him even funnier (and all the more endearing).
4) He's the Reason "Trouty Mouth" Happened
It was a season of painfully bad musical moments -- see the "Stop! In the Name of Love/Free Your Mind" mash-up and Schue and Holly Holliday's "Kiss" cover for starters. But "Trouty Mouth" was the shining beacon of hope that Glee had realized it had been taking itself too seriously -- Santana's original song highlighted how funny (and seriously random) Glee could be. And how else would we get the lyric "If you tried hard enough you could suck a baby's head," other than Sam's mere presence on the show?
5) He Can Sing!
There was no more annoying song in the world than Justin Bieber's "Baby," but Sam made it somehow sweet. (We have his version on our iTunes, and we know you do, too.) Auto-tune makes Finn's voice somewhat bearable, Mike Chang doesn't sing at all and Kurt only does whiny ballads at this point. But Chord Overstreet has pipes that were just beginning to be put to good use. It was good to see him in the spotlight when he sang "(I've Had) The Time of My Life" with Quinn at Sectionals earlier this season, but it was too short-lived. Maybe we can get one more song out of him if/when he guest stars.

I hate the show that Glee has become, but the one shiny part was Sam. He seemed like an actual high school student. His plot lines weren't overdone TV "drama". I loved that the hot blond football guy had body issues and tried just a little too hard to the point of dork-dom. And I would have loved to see the fun and drama that would and could have unfolded from a Mercedes/Sam hook up. Seriously, in the Glee version of Ohio would people be cool with an interracial couple? Would they have been cruel with a hottie footballer dating a plus size glee-clubber? (see also Puck and Lauren) Would Mercedes parents be worried about the whole Sam living in a motel with his parents? What drama may have unfolded? We'll never know. But I'm sure we'll get a ton of one-note Finn and Rachael to last a life time.
Maybe the show runners got tired of seeing a name in their credits that sounds like a private detective from an old Raymond Chandler novel (Chord Overstreet, Private I)- that and if his is not a stag name - his parents should be taken out and flogged for naming their kid that.
Hv eto disagre aobut Merceds acting chops. She is better but I don't think her and Sam would have had any chemistry. Chord and Amber seem like nice folks but neither are very good actors.
Thi was hylarious! And complitely true. Honeslty... I have no criticism... I think your points made complete sense... and I wasn't aware I liked Sam this much before I read your article... But it totally does make sense... Someone, please, call Murphy and explain this to him. Oh, and send him this article too... he might realize what a huge mistake he's making... I mean, Trouty Mouth! "I love to suck on those salamander lips"? That's GOLD... Oh, and should we mention the gold shorts? 'cause the kid actually stood in those shorts... he should be rewared with a series regular contract at least for that...

I agree with 1 & 2 & 3
I havent hear Trouty Mouth yet and sicne Cory and Chris are my favorite singers on the show ... I actually like Marks voice more then Chords but he does make awful songs bearable
and thanks for giving more legitimate reasons for my dislike of Darren being made a regular - nothing against Darren, I just cant stand Blaine
Really? Nothing they did to Sam ever made me care about him. Every time they put him on screen, I was antsy for the next scene to start. This seems like the first smart move since the Glee premiere.
Thank you for this article! Sam is my favorite character and it makes me sad that they would even consider cutting him.
To help keep him on the show, tweet #dontcutthechord and sign the petition at twitition.com
Buying his cover of Billionaire from iTunes also helps!
From what I've read (and maybe I'm wrong), he was just not asked back as a series regular. If he chose not to stay after that decision was made isn't it really on him?
This was spot-on! Well done TwoP. I miss when Mercedes had a personality. Remember when she and Kurt were friends, not Kurt and Rachel? I think they paired Kurt and Rachel up because so many people disliked Rachel and they thought it would help. Sam was the character I think most could relate to on the levels mentioned. Finn and Rachel are really boring, and Finn just became a douche (who really can't sing) by the end. So now they're cutting Sam, I suppose Mercedes and her captivating plots will be elevated from tater tots to...TORTILLA CHIPS. I have given up on "Glee" unless TwoP's recaps indicate a serious upswing in quality. Even then, I'm waiting at least eight episodes in to trust an upturn.

Grilled Cheesus was the moment I realized Mercedes had no acting chops. At all. OMG, at the end of I Look to You? As they cut between Kurt and Mercedes, all I could think was "Dear god, woman, make some expression! Weakly pressing your lips together does not an emotion make!" Or when they pan across the kids in New York, everyone looks devastated at their loss except for Mercedes, who looks blank and presses her lips together briefly. I haven't seen one scene with her that didn't look like someone *trying* to act, instead of her just acting. Sam deserves better.
No, not Trouty Mouth! He was just getting interesting, he finally had a girlfriend who wasn't a cheater or a lesbian, he was starting to feel like he belonged with the group after they helped him out...and now he's just gonna be gone? There's approximately 800 characters on Glee, they couldn't have gotten rid of Lauren instead? My love of Darren Criss and Harry Shum, Jr. will keep me around for this season, but I can't believe the Powers That Be expect this show to last past next season. They've destroyed the characterizations of ALL their main character, and recycling plotlines after only 44 episodes.

I became a true Glee fan when they brought in the Sam character. He was the best singer out of all of the boys on that show and super cute. His romance with Quinn was my favorite couple by far on the show. So sad he got cut!
Oh, and by the way, that last season finale totally sucked! Dear Glee Writers, please go back to the "gold" writing you had in the first season.
"(If you do live under a Glee-proof rock by the way, where can we find one?)"
Perry County, Pennsylvania. Was down there for the holiday weekend and heard absolutely nothing about this.
Oh, and on topic: Good riddance.
Glee has essentially been turning somersaults back and forth over the shark for an entire season, so I doubt that anything can save it at this point.
This was always about Chord, but for me it was also about Sam. I know what it's like to start out as this happy kid who just wants to be loved and to have everyone hurt you, turn on you, betray you, and then the worst possible thing happens and you're 17 and you find yourself supporting your entire family for whatever reasons, and you have to sacrifice your childhood, your life, your ability to be happy, sometimes even your very soul and there isn't a single person who understands and looks at you like you're the idiot. Sam Evans was the first fictional representation of myself that I have ever seen and it kills me that in a show that within the first 20 minutes of the first episode tells you it is all about joy that this character will never get a happy ending. There are so many people out there in the world who won't get that happy ending, RIB could have at least given it to Sam.
I agree, the saddest part of this whole scenario is that Mercedes is going to lose the only decent piece of man meat Murphy & Co. ever cared to offer the girl.
This is like the 16th article I have read on this topic. Listing all the wonderful reasons why Sam being shucked is horrible. It's really just getting depressing. Why am I watching this again.
And I wonder what's gonna happen to poor Connie Britton Ryan Murphy's new show.
I must be alone in my eye-rolling of the Sam/Mercedes thing. The fact that we don't have to suffer through that piece of ridiculousness is the only silver lining in losing Sam.
It's a shame for Chord, he seems like a pleasant, if bland, kid. But at least there will be a little more room for Max Adler and we might get to finally hear his velvety baritone on the show:

I spent the entire season hoping they'd do something with Sam's dyslexia or body image storylines, only to be disappointed. And then the poor kid was homeless. He was actually the character I was most interested in seeing by the end of the season, so naturally he's out. I hate you, Ryan Murphy.
I honestly have hated Glee all season. One of the only reasons I watch the show now is because of Sam. He's one of the only people on that show I didn't want to slap in the face. He could also sing a whole lot better than Finn. Glee really made a bad mistake. Hopefully they will actually put some depth into these characters that they are seriously disgracing.
Blaine has honestly been such a huge screen time eater this entire time, it's hard enough to believe that he wasn't always a lead. He, Kurt, Rachel and Finn are all way too overexposed on the show. Rachel's an insufferable character, Cory/Finn can't sing and Blaine and Kurt are so heavy-handed.
If they were gonna dump someone (and we all know it wasn't gonna be one of the aforementioned four) it should have been Quinn. She could go join a nunnery or something (I would actually be okay if her character's exist was never addressed) because she's awful and the actress can't sing a lick.
I am interested in seeing more from Mike, Artie and Mercedes. Finchel and Blurt can all just go sit on the bleachers for a while and let some other characters be explored.
To start off with I wasn't really into Sam, but like a lot of people he became one of my fave's. I use to like Glee but now it's become a show I watch and think 'Why am I watching this again?' I was secretly hoping that Sam and Rachel would get together, because they are both socially awkward in one way or another and I think they would make a sweet couple. But no the show keeps pushing Rachel to become more and more obnoxious, and one week the cast members are hugging her and the next practically smacking her in the face. This show is so inconsistent, all the characters are cartoonist and there is nothing real to connect to. I think I only tune in to see the singing bits...which aren't always great. Oh and one more rant could they not rehearse the same song for regional's over the whole season - off screen of course - but I watched a documentary about Glee choirs and they practice the same routine, and have costumes and sets, and the Glee kids on the show pick a song a week or hours before...sigh. Quinn should go because she is the least interesting/likable character.
Please Ryan Murphy listen to the fans and fix the show before it looses it's remaining water-ski and falls into the awaiting sharks mouth!
Maybe I am just crazy but I don't remember reading ANYWHERE that Sam was fired.
Sam is a nice kid. But if he isn't in every episode I won't burst into tears. For me Rachel is the star with Kurt, Brit and Santana, and Puck following.
I love Harry Shum Jr. and would be ecstatic if a part could be written in for Alex Wong as Mike's cousin.
Alex can dance, sing and play the piano. Plus Rachel needs an awesome boyfriend and who could be more awesome than Alex "Freaking" Wong!
that would be so "FREAKING" AWESOME if they brought in Alex as a relative of Mike's! You are a brilliant brain!!
I would exchange almost anyone from the cast for Max Adler getting to sing on the show :) (except for Cory and Chris :) my newest wish for the show is a Max/Chris duet :)
and I also forgot to mention that Ive had the Time of my life is one of the worst songs Glee has ever done. I will never ever forgive them for giving that song to the awful duet pairing that is Dianna and Chord.
but a Sam/Mercedes duet? well, if chosen right, I would listen to that. repeatedly
i would be supporting your point, but you insulted dianna aggron, so fuck you.
Zu diesen Sachen wollte ich schon immer mal mehr wissen. Toller Blog.
And for the Paul supporters that think pulling back to the borders is the right thing to do, wrong. Exercise some high end battle theory with me for a moment. Given the choice of destruction and chaos surrounding a battle would you rather have it at the border or on another continent? Personally my favorite place to break things and kill people (basic military purpose, despite commercials to the contrary) is not in my own yard but in the yard of a moron that lives a mile away (that way I don't have to clean up or break my own stuff).
Thumbs up if you will be listening to this song in 2012
I would have to say yes. Instead of buying the stuff that they are delegating you to buy, they are letting you choose. Dont make them mad, spend it on what they say its for.
