BLOGS
It's Emmy nomination morning, which means that instead of enjoying our relaxing mindless summer television, we instead are up in arms about who got nominated and, more importantly, who didn't. As always, the voters gave TV fans like us plenty to be happy about -- and plenty more that was just infuriating. Here's our gut reaction to who was honored and who was overlooked:
Outstanding Drama Series
Boardwalk Empire
The Good Wife
Mad Men
Friday Night Lights
Dexter
Game of Thrones
We're thrilled about Game of Thrones, even though the Emmys tend to overlook most fantasy shows. And we're not at all surprised to see usual suspects The Good Wife, Mad Men, Dexter or the critically beloved Boardwalk Empire make the cut. But seeing Friday Night Lights on here gets us a little choked up, given that the series finale airs on NBC this week. We wanted to see some love for the short-lived Terriers or the incredible Justified, but at least the latter's stars got a bit of Emmy love. We're happy that at least the subpar season of House didn't get acknowledged, nor did the frustrating The Killing or the weakly scripted The Walking Dead.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series
Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men)
Connie Britton (Friday Night Lights)
Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order: SVU)
Mireille Enos (The Killing)
Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife)
Kathy Bates (Harry's Law)
Harry's Law is supposed to be a drama? At best we'd consider it a dramedy, so we're surprised to see Bates on here. Do you think people really meant to nominate Katey Sagal for Sons of Anarchy? Because that we could understand, and it really is the only explanation for why she's not honored. But at least Bates is a big name and we can understand her appeal. We're still scratching our heads about the Mireille Enos nod, as she's hands down the worst thing about The Killing. Elisabeth Moss was wonderful as usual on Mad Men, but she hardly had enough screen time last season to justify leading lady status. We'd love the prize to go to Britton, but Margulies seems like the no-brainer since Emmy fave Kyra Sedgwick got snubbed.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series
Steve Buscemi (Boardwalk Empire)
Michael C. Hall (Dexter)
Kyle Chandler (Friday Night Lights)
Jon Hamm (Mad Men)
Hugh Laurie (House)
Timothy Olyphant (Justified)
Look, Emmy voters, we adore Hugh Laurie, too, but he didn't even have anything great to work with this year. Can we stop rewarding terrible writing? We're very pleased about Hamm, Olyphant, Chandler and Hall, and we're sort of fine with the predictable nom of Steve Buscemi, though we'd rather have seen his spot go to Parenthood's Peter Krause.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series
Kelly Macdonald (Boardwalk Empire)
Christina Hendricks (Mad Men)
Michelle Forbes (The Killing)
Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife)
Margo Martindale (Justified)
Christine Baranski (The Good Wife)
Mags Bennett! We were practically squealing in delight when we saw the evil mother from Justified get her due. Her nom, Panjabi's and, to an extent, Baranski's, are really the only things we agree with here. We love Christina Hendricks, but this wasn't a big Joan year, Macdonald is like nails on a chalkboard on Empire and Forbes is the second-worst thing about The Killing. We were hoping for Emilia Clarke from Game of Thrones or Mae Whitman from Parenthood instead.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series
John Slattery (Mad Men)
Andre Braugher (Men of a Certain Age)
Walton Goggins (Justified)
Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones)
Josh Charles (The Good Wife)
Alan Cumming (The Good Wife)
If they were handing out accolades for Boardwalk Empire left and right, it seems odd that they overlooked Michael Shannon, who is arguably the best thing about that show. It also seems odd that they overlooked John Noble from Fringe, who was really impressive as both Walter and Walternate. As for the Good Wife guys, we're happy that it was these two and not the mostly absent Chris Noth. And while we miss Breaking Bad terribly, we're kind of glad that its ineligibility this year meant that Justified's Walt Goggins could sneak in here.
Outstanding Comedy Series
Glee
Parks & Recreation
The Office
Modern Family
30 Rock
The Big Bang Theory
We're pouting about Community. And Cougar Town. And The League. Sigh. But at least Parks & Rec was nominated, as well as Modern Family and The Big Bang Theory. We're not sure how The Office got on here -- did they burn all evidence of the Will Ferrell episodes before submitting themselves? 30 Rock is fine, but it's been funnier in years past, and Glee? Well, that show is a hot mess not deserving of Emmy recognition here, so that means it could win.
Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Laura Linney (The Big C)
Edie Falco (Nurse Jackie)
Amy Poehler (Parks & Recreation)
Melissa McCarthy (Mike & Molly)
Martha Plimpton (Raising Hope)
If you swap Edie Falco for Cougar Town's Courteney Cox, the voters pretty much went with our wish list exactly. So there's not really a lot for us to complain about here. And it was kind of cute to watch Melissa McCarthy try not to pass out on stage this morning as she was reading the nods and found out she'd been acknowledged.
Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Matt LeBlanc (Episodes)
Jim Parsons (The Big Bang Theory)
Steve Carell (The Office)
Johnny Galecki (The Big Bang Theory)
Louis C.K. (Louie)
Alec Baldwin (30 Rock)
Joel McHale, can it be enough that we still love you and think you are fantastic? We sure hope so because Emmy voters certainly don't appreciate his dry, cutting wit. We're not shocked that Carell got a nod for his final season, or that Alec Baldwin is on here -- again. Matt LeBlanc is a pleasant surprise here, but not as big as Johnny Galecki, who we usually plays second banana to Jim Parsons.
Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Jane Lynch (Glee)
Betty White (Hot in Cleveland)
Julie Bowen (Modern Family)
Kristen Wiig (Saturday Night Live)
Jane Krakowski (30 Rock)
Sofia Vergara (Modern Family)
How did Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons and Big Bang Theory get nominated and Miyam Bialick get left off? She's fabulous on that show and much more enjoyable than watching Kristen Wiig play the same character in 15 different outfits. We were also hoping to see Alison Brie (Community) Busy Philipps (Cougar Town) or Aubrey Plaza (Parks & Recreation), but instead we got Betty White being saucy, Jane Lynch trying to show emotions and Sofia Vergara being sexy. Somehow we're rooting for Julie Bowen and Jane Krakowski. Not sure we'd have predicted that.
Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Jon Cryer (Two and a Half Men)
Chris Colfer (Glee)
Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family)
Ed O'Neill (Modern Family)
Eric Stonestreet (Modern Family)
Ty Burell (Modern Family)
Where in the hell is Ron Swanson? In fact, we would have nominated not only Parks & Rec's Nick Offerman but also his mustache if we could have. Instead, there's Jon Cryer. Really? Surviving crazy gets you a nomination? We can think of many reality stars who would have shiny trophies lining their walls if that was the case. We're glad about all the Modern Family guys because, honestly, we had a hard time picking between them as well... and if someone from Glee had to get nominated, Chris Colfer is the only sane choice.
Outstanding Reality - Competition Program
So You Think You Can Dance
The Amazing Race
Project Runway
American Idol
Dancing With the Stars
Top Chef
We barely even remember Project Runway being on in the past year, but if the Emmys tell us it was, we guess it happened. It definitely wasn't as memorable as the fashion-forward RuPaul's Drag Race, that's for sure. The rest are the old standbys, except for So You Think You Can Dance, which we're more than a little excited about.
Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program
Jeff Probst (Survivor)
Cat Deeley (So You Think You Can Dance)
Phil Keoghan (The Amazing Race)
Tom Bergeron (Dancing With the Stars)
Ryan Seacrest (American Idol)
We're so thrilled that Cat Deeley was finally acknowledged for her truly amazing work on SYTYCD that we're practically doing our happy dance in our seats over here. She really does make that show tick and adds some charm and style to the reality host landscape, which, judging by this list, is pretty much an impenetrable club of guys who have been doing this for years.
Outstanding Reality Program
Hoarders
Antiques Roadshow
Deadliest Catch
Mythbusters
Undercover Boss
Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List
There's actually no overlap here with what was on our wish list, but Hoarders was one that we definitely considered as it really is hard to forget cats that have been flattened into pancakes. That's some disgustingly compelling TV. Kathy's show is always good, while our dads enjoy Undercover Boss and, though we may not like to admit it, Deadliest Catch made us tear up on a number of occasions, so we're fine with all of those noms. Just please no Antiques Roadshow for the win.

I was happy to see Peter Dinklage nominated for Game of Thrones. I'm doubtful he'd win the category, but he's definitely a redeeming character in a show full of great performances. John Noble's omission is glaring IMO; his performance should have earned him a nomination.
for God's sake. Even if they don't love Community and Parks and Rec they should still recognize the talented cast. And seeing Glee, which is spitting out the same crap, get nominated and not Community makes me remember why Ron Swanson thinks awards shows are stupid. - and awards in general. and he's right.
I hope Elisabeth Moss finally wins for Mad Men. She always delivers a great performance, and the boxing episode in which she and Jon Hamm go at it back and fourth should be enough alone for a win.
No love for Treme, huh? Some fine actresses (Khandi Alexander & Melissa Leo) were robbed again.
I'm surprised so many men from Modern Family are cluttering up that category. I thought this season was pretty subpar and that Mitch and Cam especially didn't get great material and basically replayed the same story in every single episode. Not really a stretch for those (admittedly talented) actors this season.
I agree--my first reaction was, "Harry's Law" is a drama? My second reaction, though, was "The Big C" is a comedy? Are we talking... like Dante's "Divine Comedy" or something?
Glad to see Slattery get some love. And a Kyle Chandler win would make my Emmy evening. I've loved both since "Homefront."
I agree about Treme- the show flies under the radar, but Khandi Alexander put in some amazing work this season.
Really? Maybe it's my unconditional love for Ensign Ro talking, but Michelle Forbes is the second worst thing about The Killing, and Mirielle Enos is the worst "hands down"? Not the stilted writing or the overwrought cinematography? That seems a bit harsh. I personally thought both actors did a really credible job with the crap they were handed.
I may be alone in this boat... but I was hoping Regina King would be recognized for her work on "Southland". She really stood out to me this past season.
I haven't seen The Killing, but I've loved Michelle Forbes in everything I've ever seen her in, so it's great to see her getting some recognition. And it'g good to see Johnny Guilecki and John Slattery being nominated, too, not to mention seeing Parks & Rec and Big Bang Theory up for Best Comedy.
That being said, the Community and Fringe snubs are just glaring, especially in the acting categories. It's also a shame that the casts of Community and P & R (except for Amy) were shut out, too.
So sad Community is not getting it's rightful recognition.

Im giddy over Johnny Galecki getting a nod as well as TBBT. I root for Chris getting the nom but maybe not the win though he was pretty awesome if somewhat absent. Glee shouldnt win. definitely not for the mess that was this season.
I just wish Max Adler got a nod for his mazing amazing performance this year
and I very much agree with John Noble being overlooked and I wont even mention Thomas Gibson and Criminal Minds :(
You're not even going to mention Louis C.K, perhaps the biggest surprise? Such a nice surprise
What's wrong with Antiques Road Show? Not sensationalise grossly dramatic for you?
I respectfully disagree with the Mireille Enos diss. The detective may have been pretty dim, but I thought the performance by Enos was mesmerizing.
Friday Night Lights finally gets nominated for Best Drama? It's like I'm living in some wonderful dream world! I hope I don't wake up.
Emilia Clarke is not getting an emmy nomination?? Really guys, she's one of the best things about Game of thrones!
And who keeps picking Glee and 30 Rock?
I'm ready to dodge rocks here, but I find modern family completely overrated! The middle is much funnier, IMHO.
Elizabeth Moss MUST win! I completely agree with the poster who said that the episode Peggy and Don got a it is enough to deserve an emmy!
Vincent Kartheiser, who plays Pete in Mad men, is forever underrated! He brings it every season, making a completely unlovable character on paper be one of the most lovable characters on the show!

Ugh to so many of these nominations. Can "Fringe" not get ANY love? Fine if you don't want to nominate Anna Torv, though you'd be wrong, but *not* nominate John Noble? Geez.
Temmere, I wholeheartedly agree. I will dance in the streets if it actually wins (which, sadly, is doubtful). That show has perfect acting, perfect writing, beautiful cinematography, and so much more that it boggles my mind as to why it took this long for such a momentous occasion.
Overall pleased with the majority of the drama noms, and disappointed with the comedy noms. I disagree with the disses on Enos and Forbes - both are fine actresses who did the absolute best they could with the shitty writing they got.
But utterly delighted for "Friday Night Lights."
I am furious about the Fringe snubs. As has been said, it is ridiculous that John Noble didn't even get a nomination, and Anna Torv surely deserved a nod as well.
C'mon, Veena Sud's writing was by far the worst thing about The Killing. And she got a far less deserved nomination for it, too.
Fringe was robbed. If you are on Facebook, please join the group: "Give John Noble a Golden Globe for Walter Bishop". Thanks.
Hooray for Walton Goggins getting nominated. So very deserved.
Three words:
Cat. Freaking. Deely.
It's about time!
We can just chop out 30 Rock, Glee, and The Office in comedies to make room for Community and The League. Actually, most of the nominations are ridiculous, but since I don't even watch shows like Big Bang Theory I won't judge. But when will USA shows like Psych get some love?
Jack Huston was the only interesting thing about Boardwalk Empire; if they're going for HBO, why not the awesome camp of True Blood?
I don't watch Episodes, so Matt LeBlanc getting nominated for playing the role he was born to play is amusing. Did he get any nominations when he was on Friends?

Crap . . .I had a longer post, but it got cut off. The basics of my three paragraph post: I'm hoping Phil Keoghan wins; I'm not expecting Cat Deeley to win, since that would involve the voters being aware that their heads are up Probst's ass; I like 30 Rock and don't understand the backlash; I also like Fringe, and I think Anna Torv deserves something for playing three different people; and like everybody else, I think John Noble got hosed.
Parks and Recreation is ridiculously good...and it keeps getting better. The entire cast is full of talented actors playing great characters (OK, maybe Ann isn't that great, but Rashida Jones is just so charming and pretty). I'm thrilled about Amy's nomination, but some love for Aziz Ansari, Nick Offerman, and Aubrey Plaza, and...maybe Li'l Sebastian, too?
Regarding Glee: poor Jane Lynch is a lovely and skilled actor, but the stuff they're giving her on the show has become terrible. She was great in maybe half of the season one episodes. I much prefer her work on Party Down.
Ron. F*cking. Swanson.
And I'd honestly love to see Jane Krakowski win for 30 Rock, if just for her performance on the Live Show. She's fantastic.
What?! How is it that Parks and Rec, the best comedy on tv, gets only two nominations? Shameful.
Also, how did Fringe not get any love at all? It's one of
the best dramas on tv and John Noble is amazing, as is the rest of the cast. It would have been a much better choice then Harry's Law.
Who keeps nominating Glee for Emmys? It's TERRIBLE. Jane Lynch is one of the few redeeming qualities of the show, but that's definitely not enough for an Emmy nom. It's downright criminal that Glee is in the Best Comedy Series category and Community isn't. Community had one of the best season finales PERIOD last season and even their weakest episode was miles better than anything that's ever been on Glee.
Also, love that Peter Dinklage got an acting nom for Game of Thrones and that they were nominated for Best Writing for "Baelor" (hope that wins!), but I would have liked to see more of the cast nominated. Sean Bean and Lena Headey were fantastic.
No January Jones nom for Mad Men?! She was scary mean this season, she deserves some credit.
Not that it's a big surprise, but Community and everyone involved with that show was robbed. I love Joel McHale, but I'd like to see Pudi or Glover get the trophy before he does. And Peter Dinklage better win.
Three.
What about Good Guys? Good writing GREAT acting. Fox ntwk is an idiot, guess there are others.
Three.
where is fucking sons of anarchy?
Mayim Bialik (congratulations on misspelling both her first and last name; that's the level of quality we've all come to expect from TWoP) is a recurring guest star on TBBT, not a 'supporting actress.'
A mixed bag, as usual - Friday Night Lights deserves its due and it does choke me up to see it nominated for best drama. Britton vs. Margulies - Most unfortunate duel. Both have been amazing. The rest...? Well, Fringe, Cougar Town and Community were crazily ignored. Justified was due. Boo to the over-nominated folks.
You make the comment about Kathy Bates being nominated in the Drama category and say that the show is a Dramedy...the problem is that there is no category for Dramedy! When is the academy going to wake up and finally have a third slot for all those actors and shows that fit this heading. It is a shame that actors who show their skills in both categories week in and week out get slammed if they appear in either category come Emmy time (James Spader is a prime example, and now Kathy Bates). It takes a very talented actor to be able to do both drama and comedy effectively especially in the course of an episode.
You just said everything I'm thinking. I cannot comprehend WHY people love Glee so much. It is, hands-down, the worst thing on television! (I think Jeff Winger puts it best: "I don't understand the appeal at all!") The fact that Community didn't get one shred of recognition... I simply don't understand why it is constantly overlooked!
Southland? Michael Cudlitz?
It's a travesty for the snubs of Community and Nick Offerman. But since TWoP loves them so much, can they consider doing recaps for these shows?
I've got to agree with others who've defended Michelle Forbes. She's always able to take mediocre writing and bring some truth to it with phenomenal acting.
Thanks for this. I now no I have no reason at all to watch the Emmy's live. I will be checking the Tech Emmy results and hoping Sherlock wins something though!
Bah. Glee was pretty outstanding it's first year with a strong arc, but the second season has done nothing but disappoint. Does not deserve any nominations. Poor community. Maybe they will knock it out of the park next year? Or is it just too weird for emmys...
So excited for Cat Deeley, FNL, Connie Britton, Kyle Chandler, Justified, Tim Olyphant, and Walter Goggins because they were well deserved and quite honestly unexpected nominations. I hope at least one of those seven actually wins an award.
Count me in as disappointed that Terriers wasn't nominated for anything. Not surprising though.
why on earth wasn't Bob Newhart nominated for guest actor/drama series for his fantastic role on NCIS? for that matter, why are NCIS and Criminal Minds snubbed all the way around?
Yay for FNL, Parks&Rec, Justified, 30 Rock, and Mythbusters for their various nominations. Very happy to see Martha Plimpton up there, but Raising Hope or Community belongs there in Glee's place for Best Comedy, no question.
Missing Meg Whitman, Dennis O'Hare for True Blood, and Nick Offerman as RON F'ING SWANSON!!
No love for Terriers -- why am I not surprised? That show was brilliant, and brilliantly acted, and deserves real recognition. Emmys don't reward quality, they just go with the familiar, no matter how inane or tedious. (GLEE)
Happy for Andre Braugher - hopefully next year Ray Romano will finally be recognized for his outstanding work, and the MoaCA writers for theirs.
How bizarre would it have been to see Katey Sagal and Ed O'Neill with Emmies?
I'm still trying to think of a non-gay way of asking Ron Swanson to go camping with me.
I don't like almost all entry.will not be watching.very disappointed that so many good show were over looked. :(

Will not be watching.very disappointed that so many good show were over looked. :(
While Sofia Vergara IS sexy, I think it's unfair to dismiss her work as simply being about her looks. She is a talented comedic actress and brings a lot to a great show.
All six (adult) leads from Modern Family are nominated, and yet, not a single person from Cougar Town?
I was hoping for Mae Whitman, Peter Krause, or Lauren Graham from parenthood to get nominations. I would also like some shows from USA to get recognition.
Es conforme, este pensamiento excelente tiene que justamente a propГіsito

Charlie Sheen was/is the funniest and best actor to ever be in a comedy series.
Some people just can't say thank you. They don't even care about everything we've done.
