Five Ways to Fix The Glee Project for Next Season
Well, that was a bummer. It's one thing to celebrate truly talented finalists and not eliminate anyone for say, a week (Top Chef All-Stars did it effectively), but to have two winners and two half-winners is just... I don't know, un-American. Un-entertaining. Un-freaking-fair for Hannah. And since it looks like there's probably going to be another season of The Glee Project, we're devoting the last of our energy for this show on coming up with ways to make it better next time around.
1. Get Better Judges
On both the talent and celebrity sides, the judges on this show were seriously lacking. How was vocal coach Nikki Anders not heavily involved in the judging process? She was obviously a thoughtful and perceptive person who spent a huge amount of time with each contestant, and singing is arguably the largest part of Glee. And we'd love to see a bigger role from each guest mentor, be it actual judging in last chance recitals, more screen-time in their one-on-one sessions or maybe even doing a duet with the winners of the homework assignment.
2. Add Twists
With the exception of the ridiculous conclusion, there were basically no twists whatsoever in this series. We're not asking for Big Brother-style bring-in-your-most-hated-relative kind of shockers. Just throw some kind of wrench into the works so that everything's not so monotonous every week.
3. Cast People Who Want to Be There
Though this is often inevitable on reality competitions -- hell, even Gia left Bachelor Pad -- it's no fun when your fan favorite leaves the show. Cameron's exit made it clear that Season Two needs kids who live and breathe Glee, and who actually understand that the show can be a little bit edgy.
4. Pick Something to Celebrate
Samuel won a role in seven episodes because he's got the "it factor" and he's indie cool, despite the fact that he isn't the best singer, actor or dancer. Damian is pretty terrible at all three, but he was awarded the same prize because of his personality and the mere fact that he was so bad at everything -- they called it "underdog" appeal. What is it that Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan are looking for, again? A second season of The Glee Project will be way more entertaining and comprehensible if its challenges are built around whatever that quality is instead of, you know, talent.
5. Choose One Winner
Or at least come up with good runner-up prizes, and then announce them sometime before the moment you award them. Jeez.

Also if Ryan Murphy has the final word, he should see more of the contestants than just the last chance performances of the bottom 3. Because Ryan had never met some of them late in the game he didn't have a "character" for them in mind and they were booted far too early. Did anyone else also feel like he couldn't figure out if he was casting a guest star or a replacement for the big 3?
I liked the show and I liked the contestants, but I agree with Sam's comment. It felt like Ryan was suffering from writer's block and was hoping a bunch of kids would give him some good ideas. I think it would be more "fair" if they won some other type of prize (a new car!) and then he could bring in as many or as few as he chose. Making the prize be a part on Glee, and then handing out parts to everyone, really cheapened the whole competition. I think many of the other kids could have great storylines written for them as well, and it would make as much sense as the top 4.
Actually, I loved the ending -- mostly because what they were looking for seemed to shift around from week to week, so it seemed fair (and kind) to give reward them all. I still don't understand why they let some of the others go, however, or why they kept Alex and Lindsay. They were the two from the beginning that drove me crazy.
I think you have to look at this show as a long, ongoing audition, not a reality TV event. If Ryan thinks the final 4 are worthy candidates for parts on Glee, why not? Both shows are his. As long as the shows stay entertaining, all these "rules" are just ridiculous.
And maybe have some purely acting challenges. You know, because Glee is a tv show, where the winner will have to act.
suggestions like this are easy to write, but really don't amount to much.
We are getting a good look at actual casting by an actual production team. They don't do it with formulas -and they routinely change the rules as they go.
If they worked the way you say you want, Chris Colfer would never have been cast two years ago.
Great show.
I loved the fact that they gave each of the four finalists something. As someone else said, if they feel all of them are worthy of being cast, why not do it? They certainly earned it.
I think this show is what it is, and it's not trying to be Big Brother or any other competition show. It feels like Glee, and I loved it. Ryan Murphy doesn't really care about the juicyness of the show, he wants to cast the people he wants on Glee and hey, he got people watching didn't he?
The finale really brought out what I hated most about this show. instead of rewarding the one person who was truly the most talented (Lindsay), they turned it into a little league type competition where everyone gets a trophy. Next time, they should pick 1 winner, definitely have some challenges based solely on acting, and judge based off of talent. Oh, and also, don't let the less talented kids ruin great songs (cough cough Alex and Hannah completely desecrated Nowadays cough cough)
I agree. Who's to say that Mr. Murphy may not actually cast Hannah in a role or Mattheus. I never viewed it so much as a competition (although that is the way the show was billed) as an extended open casting call. I wasn't surprised or disapponted by the ending and wouldn't be surprised to see any number of the competitors show up on the show.
I don't care that much about the rules or prizes, but do have an opinion on the editing of the show. The kids come in and find out their homework song, practice, and perform it; the guest star comes in, picks a winner, and coaches them; vocals are recorded by each contestant; choreography is taught; the video is shot and played. This accounts for 20 minutes of the show. The last 40 minutes is the whole final 3 business. I think WAY more airtime should be devoted to the creation of the music video. To me, it is the most interesting part of the show.
Totally disagree with the assessment of Damian. He is far superior in both singing and dancing ability to current male-lead-and-golden-boy Cory Monteith (Finn).
Thanks for saying bummer for Hannah because the only thing I felt watching that travesty of a finale was how much it sucked for Hannah, the only one who should be on Glee!
I feel really bad for Hannah. She may have been a little less talented in some areas, but I liked her as a potential character. And even though it irritated me that Cameron couldn't separate kissing a girl in an acting role from some sort of premarital cheating on his girlfriend, I like the idea of writing a Christian character. I can't quite figure out where these four fit in. There's already a flaming gay boy with a more feminine voice, and there's already a girl who thinks she has to be perfect all the time and won't shut up about how awesome she is. Damien is probably the most unique -- I did love Ryan's idea that Britney wouldn't be able to understand his accent. All that being said, I do like these ideas for changing the show.

Lindsey really did have a great voice, as did Alex. So I don't have a problem with seeing them for a couple episodes of Glee. I just hated their attitudes so very much that I ended up rooting against them. (Lindsey with the whole fake crying crap after she saw that it won some of the other contestants some shine. Alex with his constant need to cut the other competitors down while touting himself as the best thing since sliced bread. Argh...) Even though Damian wasn't the most talented of the bunch, I just loved him and I'm glad he won a role. Samuel I didn't care about one way or the other until he sang Jolene, which was genius. Sucks that Hannah didn't win a role, but how awesome was it when Damian dedicated his performance to her and Cameron? That was definitely a fantasy scenario for any girl who's had a secret crush. (And yes, that made me love Damian even more.) I, too, was perplexed as to why acting challenges were not part of the show at all. I guess they just figured they wouldn't make for good TV. (The acting segments on Star Search back in the day were super awkward.) Plus, the writers obviously didn't want to do any actual writing. They probably would have made the kids write their own scenes. And finally, how is it that it never occurred to Cameron that if he'd been cast as a teenager in high school--a good-looking teenager at that--he would have been asked to kiss a girl at some point? I bet even his girlfriend would have been like, "Kiss her! Jeez..."
I'm so sick of people saying that Damian isn't talented or is "terrible" because that's just ridiculous. No, he's not the best dancer but he has a gorgeous voice and honestly no one has any idea if he can act or not. These music videos don't count. It's not the same as having lines. I just don't see how he was any less talented than Sam or Alex. Lindsay was undeniably the most talented but other than her how is Damian any more "terrible" than the rest of them? He's not.
Please, no twists. I did not watch this show for backstabbing, drama, or shocking twists. I watched for two reasons: I like Glee and I like singing.
If you want to make the show more interesting, start by choosing contestants who can all sing, dance, and act off the bat.
Then watch Grease: You're the One That I Want or How Do Solve a Problem Like Maria to see how to present a show where the contestants, shockingly, are asked to sing, dance, and act each week.
No twists - keep it about acting, dancing, and singing - and since they have so little time to learn and do both, don't bring in crazy twists to mess them up. Their job is tough enough. I also thought the singing coach got way to involved with all her personal comments. She should advise on singing, but all her comments were on their personalities, and they hurt the kids' chances a lot.
If the "team" would have taken time face to face or even one on one outside of the last chance performances i think it would have made such a huge difference in how things turned out. Personally Hannah and Damian should have been cast as a "couple" Sam did do a great job on Jolene. As far as Alex and Lindsay go i was torn because their talent by far out weighed their personalities.
