The episode started off with McGarrett in jail and everyone reeling from the Five-0 unit's recent dismantling. Danny's started going tie-less and is upset because his ex-wife/girlfriend/baby mama is moving back to Hawaii, but not to be with him. Apparently the baby she thought was his really belonged to her estranged husband, so she's gone back to him. Danny's bummed about it, but I think this will be great as Danno needs some new love in his life, and at least his ex coming back to Hawaii means we'll get more scenes with his adorable daughter.

Anyway, McGarrett's in jail, doing pushups and looking more and more like Wolverine as the minutes go by. He's visited by Danny and also his former mentor Joe (played by Terry O'Quinn, because this show needed some more Lost alums to really round out the cast), who plan to try to do something sensible and build a case to bust him out of jail. But Victor Hesse (James Marsters) has some other ideas, as he and McGarrett have a good old prison yard brawl, complete with a shiv. This vampire fan girl might have been a little giddy watching Spike and Mick fistfight. But it turns out that Vic just wanted McGarrett to get break out of jail and stabbed him to help with the cause. At which point we see that an injured McGarrett is able to take out two perfectly healthy EMTs and run off bleeding with a limp. Realistic! Then we see him nearly bleeding out in a bathroom, but still able to take down a cop. He's like T-Bag with his miraculous ability to escape authorities... I'm sort of okay with that, actually.

Steve finally winds up on Max's (Masi Oka, in a beefed-up role) bathroom floor in a pool of blood, but thanks to Max's medical abilities, he's nursed back to health rather quickly. Danno and Chin Ho are less than thrilled about McGarrett's unconventional method of trying to clear his name, but go along with it. The whole team gets back together to fight for the cause, including Kono (Grace Park), Jenna (Larisa Oleynik) and Kamekona (Taylor Wily). They're able to find evidence to clear McGarrett's name, get the Five-0 back up and running (mostly) and go after Wo Fat full force. Until Wo Fat, disguised as a prison guard, kills Victor in the premiere's final moments, immediately followed by a major twist that I can't believe any fan could possibly have seen coming (I'll spare the details because it was a fabulous blindside).

What was great about this episode, aside from the fact that there's still a continuing storyline and that the show found a way to get out of the crazy corner it painted itself into in Season 1, was the addition of O'Quinn and the amping up of Oka. O'Quinn brings some authority and stature to the show and his character has a history with the entire McGarrett family that will likely be useful in the Wo Fat case (particularly since McGarrett Sr. might have been involved in some shady dealings). And Oka is in prime form (maybe even more likable than in the first season of Heroes), as a nerdy guy who doesn't watch the news because it's too upsetting, but who knows the ins and outs of Star Wars and Star Trek without a problem. His enthusiasm made me not even mind the blatant Chevy commercial that happened in the middle of the show.

So: a preposterous ability to take down criminals and/or police, along with a great group of characters that have an easy (and blissfully non-romantic) chemistry together, a major case to investigate and some much needed comic relief? Seems like this cop show knows how to remain at the top of my guilty pleasure list for at least another year.
