The family that screws up together, stays together.
Modern Family: The Complete Second Season
Modern Family reaped so much love during Season One, its sophomore year was almost destined to disappoint a little bit. Still, even though Season 2 suffered from too many familiar situations and storylines, the terrific cast -- including recent Emmy winners Julie Bowen and Ty Burrell keeps us coming back week after week. Meanwhile, the members of the TV Academy didn't appear to notice any Season 2 flaws, handing Modern Family a clean sweep of the comedy category, including its second consecutive win for the year's Best Comedy on the airwaves. So forget our grousing -- long live the Family.
Extras: The usual mix of deleted scenes and featurettes.
Hawaii Five-0: The First Season
One of last season's biggest hits, the rebooted Hawaii Five-0 finally snapped star Alex O'Loughlin's losing streak and provided gainful employment to fan favorites Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park after their respective series (Lost and Battlestar Galactica) ended their runs. But the real stars of the show are Scott Caan, who provides some much-needed comic relief as Danno, and the gorgeous Hawaiian locations. In fact, the series is a perfect advertisement for our youngest state... provided you overlook all the murder and crime, of course.
Extras: Cast and crew commentary tracks on select episodes, behind-the-scenes featurettes (including a filmed recording of the show's Comic Con panel), a gag reel and deleted scenes.
The Kennedys
Spiked by its original network, The History Channel, after it had completed shooting but before it aired, this miniseries about one of America's most famous political dynasties eventually found a home on the little-known ReelzChannel and even picked up a handful of Emmy nominations and a Best Actor Emmy statue for co-star Barry Pepper's turn as Bobby Kennedy. Greg Kinnear plays our 35th president and Katie Holmes glams herself up (though not enough) to portray Jackie-K. Behind-the-scenes, 24 mastermind (and prominent conservative) Joel Surnow produced the series and, allegedly, distorted history for dramatic purposes.
Extras: A 45-minute making-of documentary.
Mike & Molly: The Complete First Season
Undoubtedly timed to coincide with her memorable performance in the new-to-DVD hit Bridesmaids (not to mention the show's return on September 26), the first season of Melissa McCarthy's CBS sitcom arrives on disc. The premise -- two heavyset folks (McCarthy and Bill Gardell) meet cute at an Overeater's Anonymous session and strike up a possible romance -- is gag-inducing, but the two stars do their best to rise above the mediocre material. Here's hoping the success of Bridesmaids -- and her new Emmy victory -- wins McCarthy jobs that are more worthy of her talents during the show's next hiatus.
Extras: Unaired scenes, a gag reel and an interview with the show's resident mutt (huh?).
Also on DVD:
NBC cancelled the Law & Order mothership in order to launch the franchise's latest spin-off Law & Order: Los Angeles: The Complete Series, only to watch that show crash and burn almost as soon as it left the gate. At least L&O completists can now add this set to their library alongside the similarly short-lived Trial By Jury. Along with Mike & Molly, Raising Hope: The Complete First Season, Happy Endings: The Complete First Season were amongst the previous season's sitcoms to be granted a sophomore year. Check out what you missed on those shows as well as another returning freshman, Dana Delany's mid-season procedural Body of Proof: The Complete First Season. Rounding out the week's releases are Castle: The Complete Third Season, The Mentalist: The Complete Third Season and Going Postal, a TV adaptation of Terry Pratchett's fantasy novel.
