We proudly present an excerpt from the new crime thriller: The Greendale Gun: From the Files of the Community-Watching Squad
It was a mild October night when I watched the third episode of Community's third season. That's what I remember most -- the mildness. The feeling of warm and cold mixing together to make something new... something mild.
I sat on my couch taking swigs from a tall mild one while on my TV screen, the members of Greendale's best-looking, funniest -- and sometimes its cruelest -- study group were up to their usual wacky shenanigans, this time involving a classroom project to build a terrarium; you know, like a diorama, but for biologists. Anyway, the project wasn't going well. See, the group had decided to partner up amongst themselves, but each of them was experiencing a case of buyer's remorse about the other person they picked as a partner-in-biological-homework-crime.
The hot blonde number didn't want to spend all year hearing about the overbearing religious nut's new baby. The stacked brunette skirt didn't relish the thought about putting up with the serial texting-and-tweeting habits of the snarky egg with the stupid hair. The black guy and the brown guy were already spending so much time together between classes, study group, their new apartment and late-night picture show marathons, they needed to take a big time out from each other before they started blowing each other's schnozzles. And that crusty old timer couldn't stand being paired with the turtle-loving sap who had a wife, daughter and insulin shot waiting for him at home. Outside the night was mild, but onscreen the storm clouds were gathering. If these plugs didn't pull a switcheroo soon, someone was liable to be knocked flat while humming along to a little chin music.
I took another swig and laughed. This was funny stuff. Anytime you just stick these seven nutballs in a room together and just let 'em go off on each other, you could bet that the good times were gonna roll. Arguing over where each of them ranked on their invented popularity scale? That's comedy gold right there. (Pierce's unbridled joy at realizing he was finally more popular than someone was the cherry on the top of that ice cream sundae of laughter.) Meanwhile, that poor patsy Todd kept hanging on the edges of the frame, insisting he took no offense, all the while desperately looking to escape the loony bin he had wandered into, but trapped there like a gimpy bangtail at a horseshoe convention.
I was having such a bang-up time, I didn't even feel the urge to lam off whenever fake copper Chang turned up. Usually I like this chump about as much as a Bruno likes the ballet, but, credit where credit's due, the flatfoot was funny this time around, keeping up a gumshoe monologue while investigating a non-existent mystery before burning his own home down with his "evidence." And instead of getting a one-way ticket to the pokey, he was promoted to the school's number one house peeper. Talk about a clean sneak.
I finished my drink and the episode at the same time and sat back, satisfied. That was a damn fine cup of Community right there, the best the show has offered in Season 3 so far. All the usual suspects were on point and they got strong assists from new mugs like Todd and that ex-con biology teacher, who looks an awful lot like this hood I remember from down Baltimore way. Yes siree, a fine episode and a fine drink. Hey, Barkeep Harmon? Next week, I'll take another just like it.

This was probably my LEAST favorite episode of the season so far.
I'm concerned that Chang is getting story lines independent from the group. Especially when they're...like this one. Pointless.
There has been plenty to develop this season, but none of it was really covered here, though I appreciated hints of a Troy/Abed fallout. Those two have been too happy for too long.
Come back strong next week, Community! I still love you!
I agree with Trace on all of that.
I feel like the writers want to keep Ken Jeong tied into the show since he's a "movie star" now, but the show should be about the study group. Chang is a character they interact with.
I did like the cameo of Magnitude and Vicki.
I LOVE this show but I actually think this was the worst episode of the show, it was awful...
Yeah I'm with everyone else...teh Chang stuff was so bad...a little of Chang goes a really, really long way...
I don't why everyone else had a problem with this episode, I thought it was great. Both the study group and the Chang storylines were interesting and funny, and I loved Todd.
I thought it was a great episode. A little short, though. Why do I think that? I skipped through all the Chang parts and ended up with fifteen minutes of Community hilarity. Chang is so useless and annoying that he doesn't work with the show anymore. It's better to treat Community as two shows, one with Chang to avoid, and the other pure comedy gold.
I actually fastforwarded through most of the episode. The gang being jerks to Todd was cringeworthy, and Chang is just a creep.
Not a fan of the Chang stuff. It's just too odd. Should have been about the group with minimal Chang.
I don't know what everyone's talking about. I LOVED this episode. It was miles better than the previous one, which sucked. Even Chang didn't bug me this time around.
"We had people like you in prison. We called you the 'mean clique'!" I spent the next five minutes wiping my drink off of my coffee table.
I'm with Christine. I absolutely loved the episode. I will be disappointed if this is the last we see of Todd, though, because I felt like the final shot of him was setting something up for future episodes.
I haven't liked Chang for over a season now, but his subplot was hilarious! Total win of an episode.
Don't ever write anything like this ever again.
Thanks,
The World
yes! Christine! The "mean clique" was such a funny line. I also thought the Chang storyline was really pointless, it seemed like it had such great potential, but never really took off. However I did really enjoy the moment when his and the Dean's voiceovers voiced over each other. Also when Annie dissed Todd's baby that was my favorite part, so unexpected.
"Community" should follow "Party Down"'s example, the less Ken Yeong the better. Small doses. "Chang" is becoming the "Dwight Shrute" of "Community" which could be a bad thing.
By the way, has anyone else noticed how good "The Office" has been without having the movie star as the focal point? That entire cast has really shown what a great ensemble it can be this year. Everybody in small doses.
I enjoyed all of the study group stuff this episode, and loved Todd and the Biology teacher. But Chang's gumshoe routine got very old, very fast. There was just too much of it. I like Chang best when he's playing off of people, like the Dean, not opining by himself.
I didn't even really care for the study group parts of this episode. Just more of the same.
I didn't mind the Chang stuff, though I usually do. But haven't we had enough storylines about the group being mean to outsiders and getting their comeuppance for it? It's like every character turned into Pierce. I hated the stuff with Todd. I've never known the study group to be so mean to a character and not have to pay for it. It made Change the only likeable character this episode, which is saying a heck of a lot.
I thought this was one of the weaker episodes of the show. Granted, that's kinda like saying the last morsel of black forest cake wasn't as rich and delicious as the rest of the slice, but still....
There were a few good moments, though. Like Chang and Dean's overlapping voiceovers. And the professor's Lego tangent. Most of the rest was just mildly amusing. (Better than a lot of shows on the air right now, but for this one? Still kinda weak.)
Yes yes yes. This recap was terrible. Please write like a normal person. I enjoyed the episode, but this recap almost made me hate it.
