Parks and Recreation: What Should Have Everyone Dressed Up As Last Night?

Well, I guess I should have seen a low point coming. Sure, "Meet N Greet" was dressed up as a Halloween episode, but all of the post-weight loss sumo wrestler costumes in the world weren't going to cover this oddly written episode that served way more as a transition point than an actual story. This is what I get for treating "mah" self so hard for the past two weeks. (Also: Has anyone else figured out a way to replace the "yo" properly?) Here's why the episode didn't work for me, accompanied by some completely made-up costumes that better reflect the Pawnee ensemble based on their performances last night:

Jerry
Actual Costume: Low-budget Mr. Potato Head
Better Costume: Punching bag
I've become extremely pro-Jerry and am officially over any jokes at his expense, because I just felt humiliated for him last night. I understand that Parks & Rec is a made-up comedy and that I should probably be giving the writers much more credit for creating a character that I now feel I need to defend, but I cringe whenever he's the butt of a joke these days. Unless Jerry gets an actual moment in the sun -- a satisfying home life is no longer enough now that Chris is literally screwing it -- I'm staying pissed. Even Michael Scott was allowed to succeed pretty regularly on The Office.

Chris
Actual Costume: Sherlock Holmes/Traeger
Better Costume: Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino
When trying to come up with the sleaziest outfit I could think of, the grossest guy on Jersey Shore came to mind. I wish we could've seen April nab Chris' keys way earlier in the episode so that one minute could have been devoted to him grinding on Millicent, and the rest would've been him crawling on April and Andy's dirty floors looking for them. Also, how great would it have been to see Chris slam his head against the wall and give himself a concussion?

April
Actual Costume: Sumo wrestler who recently lost an extreme amount of weight
Better Costume: Dead Ann
What was up with April last night? I think if someone new to Parks & Rec saw this show for the first time, they'd think that she was a bitchy girlfriend. And as much as I loved her costume, it would've been fun to see her combine her love of gore and hatred of Ann (though it has been waning lately) and go full-out freaky. April's character has been doing a fine job of walking the line between a little too disdainful and perfectly detached, but last night fell short for me. I know the writers have been really into giving characters vindication by the end of each episode, but as I said before, throwing Chris' keys away came too little, too late, especially when Tom's storyline was way stronger. I'd love to see an episode where we get to hang out with April's family all day, though, because sibling rivalry is so funny.

Andy
Actual Costume:UFC Legend Chuck Liddell
Better Costume: Giant baby
The wrestling outfit was great and all, but Andy acted too dumb and infantile last night to deserve anything but a diaper. Okay, maybe that's taking it too far, but he was made too much of a foil to April last night in their dark/light relationship. I appreciate Andy's silliness and desperate desire to throw a welcoming Halloween party in the cold open, and Andy's stories about the Dwyer method were pretty hilarious, but then when I was forced to think about him and April having sex on Ben's comforter inside of a pillow fort, I actually said "Ewww!" out loud... okay, and giggled.

Ben
Actual Costume: Nothing (or "Lame," according to April)
Better Costume: Batman
If Andy hadn't pointed out that Ben had a perfectly good Batman costume laying around, I think I would have passed out in frustration. Phew! That said, I didn't entirely buy that Ben would have been stubborn to the point that he was, considering he so recently opened up to Donna and Tom. I guess he's still got a way to go with expressing his needs and emotions, but I so badly wanted more Batman action. At least we got another classic Ben-Oren to add to the scrapbook.

Ann
Actual Costume: Eggplant
Better Costume: Puppy
In light of how hard she was following Ron around and how anxious she was for his approval, Ann should've gone full puppy dog. I guess being desperate for attention is Ann's official story arc this season? Had I not been watching this play out for the past four episodes I would've enjoyed their dynamic a lot better, but I'll give it to Rashida Jones for selling it as much as she did. As a rabid Parks & Rec fan, I did find myself a little let down when no one made reference to the fact that Ann loves Halloween and is usually the one throwing the big party every year.

Ron
Actual Costume: Pirate
Better Costume: Ron Post-Tammy 1 or Tammy 2
No disrespect on the pirate costume gag -- I just really love seeing Ron after his ex-wives seduce him, and I definitely appreciate that writers didn't make go Ron the same route Jim opts for every year on The Office as the guy who does the lazy, underwhelming Halloween accessory-costume. Anyways, I don't think that fixing things around the apartment with Ann in tow was particularly memorable or anything, but at least Ron gave us an inside look at Andy and April's tool box. Oh, and his interaction with Lowe's employee was exceptional.

Donna
Actual Costume: Cop (who indulges in sexy pizzas)
Better Costume: Cop (who indulges in every costume at the party and appears in every scene)
I would have also enjoyed a scene of Donna beating Sherlock Traeger with her nightstick.

Tom
Actual Costume: Successful small-business owner and "real dick"-turned great friend
Better Costume: N/A
See, if you're going to have a character act disgracefully, it works best if they are legitimately ashamed by their actions by the end of the episode. In true Parks & Rec fashion, Tom made up for his insane Entertainment 720 advertising at the Meet N Greet by the end of the episode by making Leslie cry tears of gratitude. I love the dynamic these two have (the hot tub scene was great) and, especially when juxtaposed with the other characters last night, it felt like I was watching two real people interact.

Leslie
Actual Costume: City Council hopeful who has nothing to hide
Better Costume: Ben's girlfriend
Is there anyone out there who isn't a Ben and Leslie shipper? I'm more than ready for these two to get together already, but I'd be lying if I said the pacing of their relationship didn't seem realistic to me. Anyways, Leslie was hilarious tonight and I'm glad she didn't sink as low as to pander to Sue's Salad. Gross.

I guess they can't all be winners.

This episode's saving grace: Leslie's Bachmann face at the end of her life documentary. And maybe Tom's British/Twangy narration of said documentary.

Didn't Ben and Leslie already get together, but were forced to break up because of her running for office?

Exactly. Fortunately, the election storyline is going to be resolved during Season 4, and we should get more Beneslie pretty soon.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.
