Saturday Night Live: The Six Worst Things About the Melissa McCarthy Episode

This was one of the most painful television experiences I've had in a long time, and I watched two episodes of Whitney. I don't know why I had any expectations for this one; perhaps it was because I adore Melissa McCarthy and was hoping that the writers here would have some fun stuff for her. But honestly, she's better served on Mike & Molly, where at least she gets some actual really good lines without having to be "that crazy person." This episode was so terrible that Lady Antebellum, who I am normally not a fan of (the ways I hate that "I'm a little drunk" song are too long to even count), doesn't even make this list of the worst things about the night.

Bad Sex
Andy Samberg and Melissa McCarthy meet in a bar and we find out about all their faults in the bedroom, and then they still plan to sleep together. We've got more than a few complaints about this sketch, and we could probably fill a mail bag or two with them easily.

The Opening Monologue
Clearly, this show had no idea what to do with this talented Emmy-winning actress, so they made her awkwardly sing and dance with Kristin Wiig and use fake dancers for half of it to boot. And the fact that Melissa told her kids to go to bed because mama was about to get really inappropriate wrongfully got my hopes up for the rest of the episode.

The Taste Testers
If you've always wanted to see Melissa McCarthy covered in ranch dressing, here's your chance, because that seems to be the entire point of this sketch.

Lawrence Welk
An episode should never start with this Lawrence Welk sketch. Ever. In fact, it should probably be retired completely. The gimmick and novelty have worn way off and it seemed to be just put in there to show that Melissa was a curvy gal who liked to eat. There are more clever ways to use her, this was a waste.

The Essentials
Melissa McCarthy is a really clumsy Mae West type person who falls downstairs. Repeatedly. Yeah, it's as funny as it sounds.

Office Space
Arlene is an outspoken lady who molests her co-worker and insists that he's in love with her and she does inappropriate things to him... and a horse balloon. It had a few moments that nearly made me chuckle, but the words "lady boner" turned me off.

The sketch about the people who comment on blogs on the internet wasn't horrible... it was just utterly boring. And the Chris Rock sketch wasn't funny, but at least it was short, so we can appreciate that. The only remotely redeemable thing about this episode was the Digital Short. Not that Blue Man Group or Stomp are at all timely, but putting them together with a cop drama was kind of amusing. It's no laser cats, though. I'm mostly trying to figure out who I feel worse for, McCarthy or Bryan Cranston, who suffered a similar fate last season. Maybe they can form a club for talented Emmy winners who were game for anything and just forced to act like idiots for their stints on SNL.

I have to disagree with your review almost completely. Melissa McCarthy made all of these moments hilarious through sheer force of her own comedic prowess.

This post now makes it seem like the episode was awful and that if someone missed it they shouldn't waste their time looking for it.

I normally love to read most of the opinion pieces on here but this one just seems off base.

Jacob is correct. I also disagree with this review. The skits themselves were mediocre but Melissa McCarthy made them work. For the first time in a few years, I actually laughed at several moments of this episode of SNL and it was all entirely due to her performance.

I agree with this. I was really disappointed with the sketches. I love Melissa McCarthy & was very excited for that episode. I felt the first sketch (when they usually do the "good" sketches) should have been near the end of the episode and I was sadly done with the whole thing soon after. The digital short was also a little disappointing. I hope that if she's ever on there again, they give her MUCH better material!

I disagree with the reviewer on a few of the sketches. I think the Office one and the Ranch skits were HILARIOUS. I loved seeing Melissa basically take her Bridesmaid character to new extremes.

The only skits I didn't like were the Digital Short and the Comments one.

Great job to Melissa McCarthy!!!

Wow. Totally disagree with your entire review. As always with SNL, the sketches could have been better written, but her performance was great.

I actually thought this was one of the funniest episodes of SNL in a long time. I will agree that not every sketch was a home run, but I laughed out loud several times and I attribute it all to Melissa McCarthy's hilarious physical comedy.

This was one of the best episode the show has had in a while. I actually think the digital short was the worst part of the episode because it was neither timely or particularly funny. I DO agree that the Lawrence Welk show needs to be retired. In fact, as much as I love Kristen Wiig I think they need to ease up on using her a bit and allow the other cast members to have their chance to prove their comedic ability.

Wow, that show was bad. Love Melissa, but no way could she save that turd. Sadly, she did not even appear in the only amusing bit--the digital short.

I agree that most of the episode sucked, but I thought the salad dressing skit was hilarious. It was stupid, but Melissa McCarthy sold it. The skit wouldn't have worked with anyone else.

Is EVERY blog post going to contain a slam against Whitney? We get it. You didn't like it. Find something else to make fun of. And they say SNL is stale.

I agree with this. I've liked Melissa since Gilmore Girls, but this was just a lot of fat-jokes and women-are-crazy jokes. The only funny thing was Seth Meyer's part.

I totally agree with this. Melissa was great but the sketches were boring and barely funny at all.

I agree that the skits themselves weren't that good, but MM totally sold them. She's almost Farley-esque in the way she commits to her physical comedy, and that made it worth watching for me.

I think she did a horrible job. she is just a fat version of kristen wig who should be fired from the show already. They really were both very annoying and just pissed me off during the whole episode.

She was brilliant on this snl and will prove it by winning an Emmy for this appearance
Too bad angel doesn't understand comedy better
Maybe if you were better studied on its history going back to the era of carol burnette ... Then you might have a better prepared funny bone for Melissa's brilliant work

She just sucks at everything. doesn't deserve any of the recognition she has gotten. I can't believe she was even a groundling. She is NOT funny. Just used as an excuse to tell bad fat jokes. that goes for mike and molly, bridesmades etc. Her style is an insult to + sized people. If she had any talent there would be more dimensions to her humor then her physical dimensions. I hope she has a heart attack soon so we can forget she ever existed asap. It sucks that she must be taking roles from other thick actresses with talent out there. Her pity emmy was the worst part of her stain on TV. just a group of talented skinny woman feeling good about themselves as they clap for the fat one. Everyone that pretends to be her fan is just as guilty as those ladies up there lying to themselves. Fade away already
