BLOGS
Now that The Playboy Club has been axed, we'll probably never find out if Nick Dalton wins whatever political race he was gaming for, or if that cute little lesbian bunny will ever make out with Maureen, or how long it will take before the mob boss's body turn ups. But honestly, aside from maybe the potential lesbian smooching, we really don't care about any those things at all. In fact, the mysteries were never all that engaging, which might be one reason this show has become fall's first casualty. There are, however, a few things we will miss. Five, to be exact.
Bunny Brenda's Plucky Spirit
She was a bunny with a plan and a never-say-die attitude, and she wasn't totally annoying. We'll miss you, Bunny Brenda.
The Costumes
The bunny costumes are quite adorable in their demure-by-today's-standards sort of way.
The Bunny House Where They Danced Around in Lingerie
Not that the lingerie was revealing, but it was period-appropriate and the scenes in the bunny house were actually the most enjoyable of the whole show. Let's do the locomotion, everybody.
Mrs. Channing Tatum's Overacting
Let's give it up for Bunny Janie (Jenna Dewan-Tatum), who always gave it the old college try with her dramatic pouts and storming-off scenes. We'll especially miss her giant poof of hair.
David Krumholtz Being Gainfully Employed
As we mentioned last week, Billy Rosen (David Krumholtz) was the most interesting character the show had, what with his gambling problems and his ability to manage the Playboy Club. And we were genuinely happy that Krumholtz was on a series (even this one). Maybe this former Numbers star can parlay his TV math skills to a role on The Big Bang Theory.

I'll miss an actually interesting gay storyline. It was honestly the most (or only) interesting thing about the show.
Awww... Just saw my first episode last night and thought it was totally cute - infinitely more entertaining than Pan Am!
Also, how have some of these other shows not been axed yet?
I agree. I was actually getting interested to see where they went with that story line and Sean Maher's character, whom I've loved since Firefly. I'm bummed he's out of work.
What about Laura Benanti's singing? That should be the top four things missed with this show's cancellation - she's that good.
:o( I actually enjoyed the two episodes. Just like Hopper said, better than Pan Am, which is OK but yet to give me a really compelling story line. I even enjoyed the mob plot line!
I saw last Monday night's episode, and when I saw that Colbie Calliat was the episode, my first thoughts were, "Please don't have her pretend to be some 1960's pop singer and have her perform a classic hit on the Playboy Club stage." And the minute 26-year-old Colbie Calliat pretended to be 17-year-old Lesley Gore, performing a song from 1963 in a timeline from 1961, I knew this show was doomed. And the next morning, when The Playboy Club was cancelled... I was right.
So conflicted about this. On the one hand, we have what is basically an hour long commerical for playboy, including the transerperatn kick to valid criticism of the working conditions at the clubs.
On the other hand, it had the mattachine society. Not just the token gay, but multiple colorful gay characters - and they were organized, they were playing the pants off the system, fighting for a greater good that the main characters didn't even knew existed and we know that they will prevail eventually. Alice et al. were the real heroes of the show so far, and there had been hints of a similar plotline for Brenda.
Not even the oh so hyped Mad Men has cared enough to come close to this level of depiction of the social movements of the sixties. It's depressing, but I truly doubt that we'll ever see anything like this again.
I will miss Laura Benanti. She is gorgeous and seriously talented. Get her on another show stat. I will also miss Amber Heard, who was also gorgeous, if a bit talent impaired. But beyond that, I can't say I'm bummed by the cancelation. The plotlines, even ones with potential like the Mattachine Society, were weak and poorly executed. And while there were some other talented people involved (Krumholtz and the great Jenifer Lewis), they were simply not given much to do. Mobsters, politicians, secret gay societies, and the Playboy club are all the ingredients for some potentially good drama, yet they screwed it up. They should have gone for a pulpier take on the subject matter instead of trying to graft social significance where it wasn't necessary, and in some cases, not appropriate.
Will definitely miss this show. Pan Am is okay but I think this is a lot more interesting. With the Mattachine Society subplot and the mafia murder there was tons of potential.

Just the fact of the Mattachine Society plotline was such a jaw-dropper for me that I was actually watching this terrible show just for that. I was waiting for Alice to start the Chicago chapter of the Daughters of Bilitis.
This series should have been on HBO or Showtime. Not saying it should have been all sex and porn week in and week out, but it could have benefited from maybe being able to go beyond the limits and guidelines on network TV.
The Mattachine Society storyline was mildly interesting, but belonged on another show. Definitely not this one.
Ditto on desperately missing the Mattachine Society storyline already. This is a story that literally has never been told on television before and it was being done well.
I keep hoping to hear that someone has stepped up to rescue this series or that at the very least NBC will find a place for it on Bravo instead of yet another pack of shrews clawing each others' eyes out.
Totally down with you on this,Jill.
HBO would have known EXACTLY how to handle this material, and they had the ways and means to do it. Not just here, but SPIKE,TNT, and even AMC(wouldn't THAT have been the combo--PLAYBOY CLUB RIGHT ALONGSIDE MAD MEN!!).
Another post had a great idea.
GET LAURA BENANTI A RECORDING CONTRACT AND LET HER DO AN ALBUM(yeah,I'm totally old school.I still think of CDs as albums)of '60s standards. Along with some more solid acting roles.
All in all, another missed opportunity.
I'll be the first in the stores when the series comes out on DVD(with the unaired episodes).

Its the draft news releases that folks send out to me that are my problem.
