We'll say this for American Horror Story's Season 1 finale -- we were never certain exactly where it was going to go. And here's another thing: after a freshman year filled with freakish thrills and funny laughs (both of the intentional and unintentional variety), the last thing we expected from "Afterbirth" was that it would be so... well, sweet.
After all, this was an episode that killed off the one surviving member of the Harmon clan, terrible psychiatrist and general failure of a human being Ben, within the first fifteen minutes. Initially, he planned to do the deed himself via a bullet to the head, but was talked out of pulling the trigger by the ghost of his wife, Vivien, who appears infinitely happier ever since she joined the ranks of the walking, spectral dead. She wanted him to leave the house with their surviving child (well, technically, hers and Tate's child) in tow, but Hayden intercepted him on his way out the door to present him with a parting gift in the shape of a noose. With that, the Harmon family exits this world and, funnily enough, they're more functional now than they ever were when they were alive. (There's nothing like realizing you're stuck with someone for all eternity to encourage you to kiss and make up.)
Their first ghost family activity: banding together to scare the Murder House's newest human residents -- the pleasant-seeming Ramos brood, which includes mom Stacy, dad Miguel and teen son Gabriel -- out of the place their first night there (here's hoping they get their down payment back). The Harmons are then rewarded for that good deed by welcoming a new bundle of joy: the stillborn baby that Dr. Charles handed over to his wife last week. (As she tells us, he wasn't completely dead at that point -- he had time to make "one little tiny cry and then passed on.") Because Nora isn't exactly the mothering type, she gladly lets Vivien take her baby back and heads off into the dark basement for a nice long rest. (Gotta say, having two kids myself, they are adorable as newborns, but I wouldn't want infancy to go on literally forever.) The last we see of the Harmons, they're standing in front of a decorated Christmas tree in an empty Murder House, serene smiles on their faces -- a scene of perfect domesticity. So good luck finding storylines for Season 2, y'all! Well, we suppose there is the matter of the little demon that Constance is raising next door... [Note: On second thought, forget about all that. As Ryan Murphy informed the world, this is the last we've seen of the Murder House, the Harmons, Constance and her bloodthirsty grandchild. Season 2 will tell an all-new story with all-new characters. That's one way out of having to explain any plot holes. -- Ethan]
Freaky: Those Title Credits
We haven't given it a shout-out yet this season, but kudos to Kyle Cooper and the good folks at the filmmaking collective Prologue for designing American Horror Story's terrific opening credits sequence, scored to a great piece of music by former Nine Inch Nails band member Charlie Clouser and sound designer Cesar Davila-Irizarry. It's been a highlight of the show since the pilot -- an effectively creepy mood-setter for the chills and chuckles that follow.
Funny: How To Be a Ghost 101
Despite what you might think, it ain't all that easy being dead. You've got to watch your surviving loved ones go through various stages of grief, while also avoiding apparating in front of them by accident. Good thing Vivien has veteran phantom Moira around to help her adjust to her new state of being. And the maid takes their mentor/student roles seriously, gently chiding Vivien for "hovering" around Ben while he putters around the kitchen. And when Viv requests a cup of tea, Moira turns her down flat, saying "I don't take orders from ghosts." That's telling 'em, Moira. Whoever heard of a ghost drinking tea anyway?
Freaky: Hanging Out
Though we suspected it was coming, Ben's murder was still pretty shocking in its swiftness and brutality. Hayden confronted him on the stairwell, keeping his eyes on her while her ghostly accomplices snuck up behind him and wrapped a rope around his neck, then attaching the other end to the chandelier and pushing the not-so-good doctor over the banister, while Tate and Vivien's son wails in his carrier. What a way to go.
Funny: Violet Harmon, Music Critic
Apparently, nothing's a bigger turn-off to Violet than a poor taste in music. Thumbing through Gabriel's record collection, Vi incredulously asks the kid why on Earth he'd willingly listen to the Butthole Surfers over the Ramones. We have to agree with the snobby goth ghost here.
Freaky: The House Is Alive With the Sound of Ghosts
In order to convince the Murder House's new residents that they need to live somewhere, anywhere, else, the Harmons rally their fellow spirits to freak the living crap out of this poor family. While Ben dons the Rubber Man garb and assaults Stacy, Vivien and Moira show Miguel the house's other horrors and Tate holds Gabriel at knifepoint (although he's acting as more of a free agent than an official member of the Harmon Spook Squad). Even Beau, the freak in the attic, gets into the act, dropping down the fold-out ladder screaming, "Why! Why!" After enduring that waking nightmare, it's no wonder that the Ramos clan flees screaming into the night.
Funny: War of the Harmons
Our favorite part of the horror show the Harmons staged for Miguel and Stacy came when Vivien and Ben confronted each other in the basement and played a bloody game of good ghost/bad ghost. After Viv accused Ben of feeling up the new woman in the house, she slices him open with a knife and happily says "You have no idea how long I've been wanting to do that." Ben responds by pulling out a gun and shooting his wife point-blank in her noggin. "You have no idea how long I've wanted to that," he gurgles, before turning the gun on Mr. and Mrs. Ramos. After they run away in terror, the Harmons share a relieved laugh. Nothing like a little physical violence to bring a husband and wife closer together.
Freaky: Like Father, Like Son
Looks like Tate's offspring already has a taste for blood. In the three-years-later epilogue that closed out the finale, Constance returns from her salon appointment to discover that the adorable youngster has ripped his caretaker to shreds. "Now what am I gonna do with you?" Constance asks her smiling, blonde-haired grandson. Guess we'll find out next fall. [Edit: No we won't. -- Ethan]
Funny: Dialogue Like This
"It's nice, right? I dunno, maybe it's haunted or something."
"Perhaps he's dreaming of all the women he could have relations with. Forgive me, I suppose that was unkind."
"I saved you a shitload of money." "Yeah, you did."
"Get out of my way Hayden, I don't have time for your bullshit."
"Well, that's all very touching. But where the hell is the baby?"
"You sick, perverted bastard. They've barely moved in and you're already preying on the new meat?"
"Can you just hang out with me sometimes?"
"What do you call him?" "Little noisy monster."
"The amount of money those people throw away on a 13-year-old."

In what world is Violet "goth?" I guess in the same world that the Ramones are better than the Butthole Surfers (i.e., the world of bad TWoP blog posts). Seriously, anyone who listens to the Butthole Surfers probably likes the Ramones. People who like the Ramones, but not the Butthole Surfers are usually the annoying sort who wants to "slum" by listening to punk rock, but don't really have an appreciation of the genre. In short, that means poseurs.
Funny, I was thinking the same thing when Violet said that about the Butthole Surfers then asked if he had any Ramones. Really, Violet?
Look around at your dudes! Do they buy term paper? Are you going to do the same? I suggest to search the web right before you do that!
Ben should have listened to Constance when she told him to take the baby and never set foot in the house again. Ultimately, after blaming Constance for all the tragedies that have happened to Ben’s family, he should have listened to her; he just might have lived to see another day. This was a show all about just realizing and putting things in perspective and that can be both funny and scary at the same time. I just finished watching the season finale at DISHOnline.com and can’t wait to start on the next season. DISHOnline is a place where DISH Network customers and employees like me, can watch a whole lot of movies and shows, it’s a great way to pass the time.

I've been ill so I'm watching an AHS marathon in bed. So the second time around, you're not as shocked so you pay more attention to the storyline. Plus the fact that since the story goes back and forward so much, the 2nd time around you put together some of the unanswered questions. Here are some plot holes left unanswered if they are changing to a new story next year but also some things I put together that I didn't realize the first time around. I really think that even if they did want to start with a new family and place, they should've given the Harmons and their Murder House another season or at least another 5 episodes. They really should have built it up better. Such a shame because it truly could have been brilliant. There's a lot, sorry it's so long but hopefully some of you will appreciate it.:
1. The issue of Moira and Thaddeus aging (I know there are theories but it wasn't really explained in the show. Men seeing what they want and women seeing your soul isn't sufficient. Did Nora actually kill baby Thaddeus or not? That was kind of vague too.
2. In ep. 4, Ben cries to Tate that he was a problem child. It seemed important because of the emphasis they put on it during that ep. but it was never explained what happened to him as a teen. It's obvious he has sexual deviation problems, but again it goes unresolved.
3. What did the nurse, Angie see in the ultrasound that made her faint and then quit, telling Viv that it was the anti christ? When the baby was born it looked like a normal cute baby. No hooves, etc.. Also, the doctor didn't see the hooves either, so why did the nurse?
4. Why was Constance trying to harm Violet? It was never answered why she made her muffins to make her very ill?
5. There is a lot of enigma surrounding Constance. This wasn't really explored.
6. Constances 4th child. If it wasn't important for us to know, they would have said she only had 3. They seemed to emphasize that she had 4.
7. The reason WHY Tate is so angry. This should really have been explored as to what triggered him to be a psychopath. He shows a lot of remorse when he isn't so manic or psychotic. It's more than the house. Others died in there but no one is as violent one second and sweet the next as Tate. Although, he did grow up there and seeing all those ghosts plus a bad mother could have flipped his switch. But I did realize watching it the second time around that the violence he committed after his death was to protect/please first Nora then Violet. He has mommy issues, as he admits to Moira (though it's never explained why. They barely show us his relationship with his mother before he died and what drove him to commit the massacre he did.) My only guess is that she abused him, because she does start hitting him after she finds out he raped Vivienne, and he starts crying "mama!" Like a hurt little boy. Either that or that he was angry at her selfishness with the other children and that she was sleeping with Larry. Tate accuses Constance of making Beau suffer. They show that that is about the same time he snorts drugs, sets fire to Larry and then goes on a shooting rampage at school.
He is little when he meets Nora and he wishes she was his mom. After that, he tries to do anything for her to keep her from being sad. She wanted a baby. When he finds that Chad and Pat aren't having one, he kills them so another family will move in that may have kids. Again when Nora wants a baby, he rapes Viv to get her pregnant. He admits over and over that he is remorseful and tired of hurting people. In his own screwed up mind, it's all for love. That is why the audience loves him. There is a sad romance to him. He's a lost little boy with a messed up mind.
8. Where is Viv, Moira, etc, when Violet was committing suicide and Tate was screaming "Don't you die" as he dragged her to the bathroom? Also, why do 2 weeks pass until the school notifies the parents that she hasn't been coming to school? That is so unrealistic. Miss one day of high school and they call home. Ryan Murphy of all people should know that since he's been working on a high school show these past few years.
9. What is the reason Moira puts up with Constance's abuse and lets her steal without telling Vivienne?
10. Why couldn't Tate have sex with Violet on Halloween? Can ghosts be impotent?
11. Did Tate not really remember that he massacred the kids in school? He appeared not to in the beginning but then he confessed to it toward the end of the season. Even to the murdered kids, he denied knowing what he did. He still seemed surprised when Violet told him he did it. The medium, Billie Dean says Tate doesn't know he's dead. But later we find that he does. He admitted to Violet that he didn't tell her so she would accept him. More than a bit vague, I think.
12. Nora who has been there the longest, doesn't know she is dead and is totally confused as to why her house is being messed up until Hayden sets her straight. In fact, it Hayden and Moira seem to be the only ones in total awareness as to what happened to them and what is going on around them. The other ghosts are all a bit confused (Tate, Nora, Elizabeth Short, Charles, Violet...) They slip in and out of lucidity.
13. The grotesque murals on the walls in the house were painted by Constance.
14. Ben only looks a little stupidly confused when he sees Moira age before his eyes. He should be totally freaked out, seeking answers and realizing things. Through out the whole season, not much seems to surprise him.
15. It kind of seems obvious season 2 is going to be about the baby Michael and his being the anti-christ. If it's not, the whole set up about the pope and all was an utter waste of time and a dead ended plot.
16. What happens to the body of the exterminator? That house should smell like the worst thing in the world with the two dead bodies in the crawl space.
17. When Larry is saying goodbye to Constance before he goes to prison, he asks her to admit she once loved him to make his prison stay tolerable. She of course blows him off, they play this intense music and the episode ends. Well, That episode, Smoldering Children, to me was the most intense one. Yet they finish it with Larry. Unless Larry was to show up some other time to get his revenge on Constance or they use the prison he is staying at for next season, that scene was absolutely unnecessarily blown out of proportion!
18. Why did Billie Dean have such a negative reaction to Tate?
19. Here is a big hole. Constance killed her Husband Hugo in the house. Therefore he is a ghost there. We do see him once when Hayden is having sex with him. But why is it that Tate never sees his father? They are both ghosts in the same house. Tate still thinks his father ran away. Makes no sense.
20. Why is it once Ben dies Viv, doesn't seem to be concerned with the baby at all? Hayden takes her but it's Constance that comes after her not one of the Harmons?
21. What was with both Ben and then the new owner, Miguel sleepwalking then holding their hands over the stove fire? Both times is it Larry's wife who had burned in the fire making them feel the burning pain?
22. Wonder if the Lemon Grove School For Girls may be part of next season? That is the school Ben was speaking to before he found out she was dead.
Anyway I will say it again. It would have been a fantastic and well rounded story if they had stayed with this for another season or at least not have crammed it all together like that, killing off the Harmons all in a rush. They could have added another 5 episodes and made it clear and beautiful.
Sorry for making this so long. All comments welcome.

Hi Connie and Amanda:What fun to get your psarcotd and your website address. Have enjoyed grazing through and hope you have great success. It looks like it has been put together very well. I also checked out the needlepoint sites, but alas, found no Norfolks. Maybe later. Wish my hands worked better so I could do needlework again. Might give it a whirl if I found the perfect Norfolk pillow to do. Hope you are well, Connie .you too Amanda. I have put you on my bucket list to see in the next year. Perhaps next Spring. Let me know if you are going to be in CA or nearby anytime soon. Best to Pope and critters at home and in the field. Love and kisses. Sue
