The Force is strong with Seth MacFarlane
Family Guy: Volume 9
Seth MacFarlane's flagship series hit the double-digit season milestone back in September and celebrates by releasing its ninth year on DVD. This was the season where the Griffin clan got up to such madcap misadventures as vacationing (and avoiding being killed) at James Woods' mansion, berating Rush Limbaugh and switching roles so that the kids become the parents and the parents become the kids. (As you can probably guess, that experiment doesn't end well...) The season ended with the third installment in their Star Wars spoofs, "It's A Trap," which re-tells the events of Return of the Jedi in classic Family Guy fashion... i.e., with lots of swearing and accidental deaths.
Extras: Commentary tracks on specific episodes, a "History of the World According to Family Guy" featurette and a recording of the show's 2010 Comic-Con panel.
The Life & Times of Tim: The Complete Second Season
After originally being taken off the schedule, HBO reversed their decision and granted a stay of execution to this animated series about the titular twentysomething, who wrestles with life and love in the Big Apple. In Season 2, Tim journeyed to Atlantic City, falls for an animal-rights activist and gets diagnosed with a personality disorder by a child psychologist. Aziz Ansari, J.K. Simmons, Missi Pyle and Alfred Molina are among the big name guest stars that deliver cameo vocal appearances. Look for the new season to start airing on December 19.
Extras: A behind-the-scenes featurette with cast and crew interviews.
Sledge Hammer!: The Complete Series
Made in the vein of Police Squad (although not as hilarious as that short-lived classic), this '80s-era cop comedy revolved around Inspector Sledge Hammer (David Rasche), a Dirty Harry-style detective with the San Francisco PD, whose itchy trigger finger winds up causing more trouble than it solves. Despite low ratings, the series managed to stick around for two seasons and 41 episodes, all of which are included here. Among the recognizable names that worked on the show behind the camera are former Incredible Hulk Bill Bixby (who directed several episodes and also acted in one) and future Simpsons showrunners, Al Jean and Mike Reiss.
Extras: None.
Also on DVD:
Lea Thompson follows fellow '80s teen movie vet Molly Ringwald to ABC Family with Switched at Birth Vol. 1, playing a mother whose teen daughter was... well, switched at birth. Nothing quite so dramatic -- or unintentionally funny -- happens in Spin City: The Complete Sixth Season, the final season of the city-government themed sitcom that briefly gave Charlie Sheen another in his long line of comebacks.
