Absolutely Fabulous: Reunited and It Feels So Normal

Normal is not a word ever really used to describe the AbFab ladies, but that's exactly what last night's reunion special felt like: normal... by their standards, at least. The ladies were up to their typical antics with Saffy shooting disparaging looks at her mother -- if it hadn't been for Bubble trying to use an iPad and jokes about Twitter and Dubstep, I would just have thought this was an ordinary lost episode, instead of the show's 20-anniversary special.

But the fact that the special wasn't all that special (with the exception of a cameo by Sofie Grabol of the Danish version of The Killing) was perfectly fine. It was actually better than if the show had its characters mugging at the camera and making awkward jokes about not seeing each other. Instead, it was like getting a little glimpse of their lives now, and with just a couple of episodes instead of a full-series revival, it was a perfect little post-holiday treat. Maybe more shows could try this, instead of stringing us along for years about possible movie spin-offs. We'd just like to know if Veronica and Keith Mars are still swapping banter, if Jack Bauer is taking down more terrorists and if any Bluths are currently eating ice cream sandwiches in jail.

Speaking of the slammer, that's where Saffy has been for the last two years, on fraud charges. She returns back home to the welcome arms of her mother, who fully expects that her prison pal is really her lesbian lover. She's not; unfortunately, the large lady is a drug dealer to whom Patsy owes a large sum of money. The ladies have to use Patsy's age to their advantage to get her pension, and they get out of their pickle with little to no trouble at all. But the plot really didn't matter all that much. What is important is that the cast re-gelled with not an ounce of problem. It actually felt like they filmed this a minute after the series ended. My favorite moment of the night (aside from watching Bubble reenact the Royal Wedding) was this fabulous (pardon the pun) exchange between Patsy and Edina, as they tried to catch Saffy up on some of the important things she's missed while in jail:

Edina: "There's a new disease called the Kardashians, darling. They just spread..."
Patsy: " ...like herpes. Each one with its own reality show. They are multiplying like head lice."
Edina: "Look at this fat one at the end. Very soon she will split like an amoeba and become two Kardashians."
Patsy: "That looks like a boob, but in fact it is just another Kardashian."

The quick pace and the give-and-take are something that made these Edina and Patsy legends in more than just their own minds, and it was nice to see them again. I hope -- and expect -- that the other two episodes continue to poke fun at pop-culture in their own weird and wonderful way.
