Raylan is okay, everyone! He's a little sore from his gunshot wounds, but that'll probably just make him tougher in the long run. Truth be told, I feared that Justified wasn't ever going to have a villain as compelling as the late, great Mags Bennett, but then the show went ahead and introduced Neal McDonough as mobster Robert Quarles into the mix on last night's season premiere, "The Gunfighter." After watching McDonough play a total psychopath on Desperate Housewives back in the day, it's safe to say that Raylan has his work cut out for him.
Elsewhere, Ava lives (!) and is ready to kick some ass for Boyd, who has gone and got himself locked up with Dickie and Dewey. Then there's this whole Winona's pregnancy business, which Timothy Olyphant addressed awesomely the other day in an interview with New York Magazine, saying about baby Felix/Jiffy Pop: "As long as I don't have to act with a kid, you can call it anything you want. I'd rather Raylan get a golden retriever."
The best part of the episode for me was the moment when Raylan came pretty-face-to-pretty-face with Monster of the Week Fletcher Nix (Desmond Harrington). We all knew Raylan is no fool, and that he wasn't going to fall prey to Fletcher's fancy countdown fakeout and end up ice-picked in the hand -- and yet it was so thrilling when he pulled that tablecloth and shot Fletcher in the shoulder. Of course, following that with Quarles' massacre in Arnett's office was just icing on the cake. I'm just glad there's still a need for cowboys in this town.
