"Egg Drop" wasn't the worst Modern Family venture this season by any means, but it was, for the most part, forgettable. Sure, another plotline where Claire is competitive and Jay is stubborn. That Gloria sure is bad at all things car-related! Isn't Haley a selfish teenager?! And how many times have we seen Mitchell and Cameron out-do themselves only to have it bite both of them by the end of the episode? (I'm honestly sick of complaining about this one -- there's not even character development within their fights anymore. It's not like Claire and Phil have it out every episode.) To break it down a bit further, here's a look at the least successful parts of the episode:
The Egg-Smashing Competition
There were some funny lines and good sight-gags tucked into this one, and the little twist at the end of Luke and Manny tricking their parents into doing their projects was kind of fun, but beyond that, this was a weak plotline. Alex did more of her power-nerd spiel, and though it usually works for me, the act felt especially contrived in this episode (that Manhattan Project reference was beyond awkward) -- especially against the backdrop of Claire's rising insanity.
Phil's Lame Speech
Isn't making public speeches kind of Phil's thing? Why was this one so over-the-top cheesy and awful? I can believe that he was shook by nerves, but hearing his keys to success wasn't even enjoyable. I guess this all happened to create a more interesting dynamic between Phil and Gloria (one that goes beyond Phil thinking she's hot), but on a comedy level, I took very little from it.
Gloria Liking Yelling
Sofia Vergara has been given way more to do humor and acting-wise this season... which isn't always a good thing. I thought there was a real moment of honesty when Haley told her that Phil puts her on a pedestal, and it was funny when he later literally did do it, but Gloria pointing out the irony of the situation sunk the punchline.
The Singing Competition
Why are these two horribly stubborn and competitive people even considering adopting another child when every single thing causes them to fight? The funniest moment of the night for me was seeing Mitchell get really into the duet, which was basically a signal that everything was about to go wrong with their storyline. Before Cam felt compelled to ruin absolutely everything and accidentally convince the pregnant girl to keep her baby, I genuinely enjoyed watching Mitchell fight his politics back and complain about "actually doing a song and dance."

Overall I did find the episode lacking, which was sad because this show is usually so funny! My fave line of the episode was probably when Phil was introducing himself at his seminar while yelling at Hailey and Gloria over the phone at the same time.
"Stop making excuses!!! ... And start making your dreams come true!"
My favorite line: "We're not just adopting a baby, we're saving him from a lifetime of searching for East Dakota."
