In a slow week for TV on DVD releases, the only show we can recommend is one that's been off the air for thirty years.
Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: Season One
In case you missed the complete Buck Rogers set that was released a few years back, here's your chance to own the first season of this late '70s sci-fi serial, which premiered in March, 1979 -- two years after Star Wars and one year after the original incarnation of Battlestar Galactica. Based on the '20s-era pulp hero, the new Buck was also overseen by Galactica mastermind Glen A. Larson and the series actually used castoffs and hand-me-downs from the BSG archives. Gil Gerard played the title character, a NASA pilot that is accidentally frozen during a routine mission and is only thawed out some 500 years in the future, when human civilization has managed to rebuild itself following a nuclear war and the entire planet is under the control of a special defense organization that protects it from internal and external threats. Undeniably cheesy in that late '70s way, Buck Rogers is still goofy fun if you don't mind dated F/X, fashion choices and hilariously retro depictions of the world of tomorrow.
Extras: None -- just like the previous set.
Also on DVD:
Who loves ya, baby? Shout! Factory apparently, as they're releasing Kojak: The Complete Movie Collection, a four-disc set containing all eight Kojak TV movies that Telly Savalas made during and after the show's five-season run. Celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain has since launched a new series, but fans of his previous show No Reservations can revisit their favorite episodes courtesy of Anthony Bourdain, No Reservations Collection Six Part II.
