BLOGS
Sometimes when Saturday Night Live books a real actor, the sketches are more complex, funnier and all-around better. Other times, it's a lot more like this week's "Josh Brolin/Gotye," where guest hosts are reduced to bit roles, the sketches are far too long and the episode is nearly void of laughs. Aside from a fun(ish) cold open about the Republican Primaries, a pretty clever critique of Game of Thrones' obsession with sexposition (also not online) and a topical Piers Morgan bit, this episode was a major disaster. Let's take a look at the worst of the worst:
The Californians
I'll admit that the first minute of this bit was kind of enjoyable -- people from California sure do like talking about driving, the accents were funny and watching Bill Hader try not to crack up had its charms. Fast forward to the fifth minute of the sketch (it clocked out at 5:16), and it was clear that there was going to be a whole lot of filler for a gag that relied far too heavily on people liking wacky accents.
Digital Shorts: Laser Cats 7
I usually like the Laser Cats bit, but this one was downright painful with absolutely nothing funny about it, unless you find Steven Spielberg's lines to be laugh riots. And the E.T. joke got old fast, to put it kindly.
Weekend Update: Garth and Kat
Another recurring sketch I usually like gone wrong: Maybe it was just the lack of energy from the rest of the episode, but Garth and Kat usually feels way cuter and sillier than this one did. Fred Armisen and Kristen Wiig seemed to be enjoying themselves, so I guess that's a plus.
Digital Short: Goyte Backstage
Andy and Taran may love Gotye's "Somebody I Used to Know" music video, but as someone who has never seen it (honestly, outside of Glee, I had never even heard that song... maybe I'm completely alone on this one), it felt more childish and stupid than remotely fun.
Principal Frye Prom
I don't know any Principal Frye fans, let alone a single soul who would have wanted to sketch to go on for nearly six minutes. Let's all never talk about this episode ever again, okay?
