The Pitch: Fiction is Better Than Truth

The Pitch: Fiction is Better Than Truth

For the sake of a level playing field, let's assume that you, unlike me, don't feel satisfied after watching the ad firm at Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce hash out their drama for an hour on Mad Men. Where I, for one, watch Matthew Weiner's hit series for the excellent writing, complex characters and various other reasons, the advertising part of the show is definitely a highlight, but by no means what's bringing me back every week. Still, AMC never got the memo and is now asking us to watch what is essentially The Apprentice without any washed-up celebrities calling each other "fucking useless" in the process... airing opposite The Apprentice. Unfortunately, I'm not buying it.

Unlike Oxygen's The Glee Project -- which wisely noted that since people love Glee, it'd be genius to record and facilitate the casting process for the series -- The Pitch completely misses the mark on what people would want from a Mad Men-inspired reality show. ABC and NBC were brave enough to try their hands at other '60s series, and even if Pan Am and The Playboy Club failed miserably, both still took more of a risk than this slapped-together show does. The Pitch takes itself far too seriously (even including the Intervention-style Black Screen of Judgment) but worst of all, it is completely dull in comparison to the advertising game that Weiner and his crew capture so well.

The fictionalized SCPD office -- full of glamour, fashion, day drinking, sex, drama and Roger Sterling -- is infinitely more interesting than seeing two "teams" compete to win the chance to make a commercial for Subway. We'll never see any actual scandal in this series the way that Mad Men has so genuinely been able to use (and bash) real-life established companies; instead, The Pitch feels more like a less wholesome Undercover Boss, where executives are praised and most parties involved feel really good after the process. Unless someone screws a secretary during a brainstorming session, there's no way this show is going to last beyond one season.
