It's been a fairly anticlimactic season of Modern Family. Some episodes were fun to watch, some were slightly grueling (especially in the first half of the season) and now after "Baby On Board," we're left with a little bit of heartache. The writers are so skilled at crafting gay characters and portraying the struggle of adoption... but next season, it looks like a good portion of our time will be dedicated to Gloria's pregnancy. Suddenly I long for Mitchell and Cameron to get into a really big fight just so that we don't have to see what that poorly acted nightmare is going to look like.
Anyways, I thought the Season 3 finale was only okay. There weren't many big laughs, but I did like everyone's storylines. Once again, Dylan (Reid Ewing) stole every scene he was in, the Manny and the Dunphy kids were great and Ed O'Neill slightly broke my heart. Here was the very best of the episode:
"That's charcuterie? I've been avoiding that on menus for years. They're killing themselves with that name!"
I've really been enjoying Jay and Manny's dynamic this season. This was one of their best scenes together all season, with Manny appealing to his stepdad by showing off his crotchety side and Jay shushing him about offering those delicious Italian meats to Cam and Mitch.
"Alright, I got this -- Honey, you look super sexy."
I'm glad we didn't have to dwell on Alex's prom date being gay. Instead, it was just a short little gag that moved along the plot. Perfect, especially thanks to the picture with "flash."
"I'm in, just give me a heads up."
Luke was so funny in this episode, nicely adding some comic relief to the Haley and Dylan conflict, though "Wait a second, how did Dylan get the nuclear codes again?" helped, too. And I'm always a fan of Claire just putting her entire hand over Luke's mouth.
"Listen, I know that you're concerned, but I'm designing t-shirts now, and they're gonna be huge... also medium and small."
Frankly, every Dylan line should probably go here. "And his name is me!" and "I want to be your Angela Wilkins" made me laugh just as hard, as did his closing of Luke's closet door. It's been a common trope this season that the "good" boyfriend encourages his girlfriend to go to college (see: Glee) and in my opinion it was probably done best here. But then again, I really like Dylan a lot.
"I'm lying next to my rock."
The real-life melodramatic Spanish soap opera bit was kind of fun, especially when Cam was still trying to translate it, but the highlight of the whole episode for me was the emotional scene between frustrated Cam and Mitch, mostly because I am a total sucker. Modern Family is remarkably good about not taking the easy way out of things, and making this a moment of pain instead of a convenient last-minute celebration was a pretty bold choice. It almost made me forgive that little Prius commercial in the middle of the car ride to the hospital... almost.
