Vaya con Dios Chuck and Sarah.
Chuck: The Complete Fifth Season
After five seasons, 91 episodes and countless Subway sandwiches, NBC's perpetually low-rated spy-serial finally ended this past January with a smiley-faced finale for its titular accidental spy (Zachary Levi) and his lady love Sarah (Yvonne Strahovski). While the show's small, but devoted fanbase stayed loyal to the show to its dying day, we largely felt that the march to its belated ending was a slog rather than a sprint. But hey, the fact that it managed to eke out five seasons despite CW-level ratings is a feat worthy of a free footlong sub or two.
Extras: Audio commentaries on two episodes, a gag reel, five featurettes and a short documentary about the making of the series finale.
The Big C: The Complete Second Season
That Showtime keeps ordering up new seasons of this cancer-themed comedy series tells us that someone, somewhere out there must be watching it, but we haven't met that person yet. If you are that person, then you'll be probably pleased to see that all 13 episodes from The Big C's second season is now available on DVD. If nothing else, it's nice to see that Laura Linney and Gabourey Sidibe are scoring regular paychecks in this tough economy.
Extras: Deleted scenes and outtakes.
Cold War
History comes alive in this award-winning 24-part documentary originally produced for CNN in 1998. Executive produced by British TV veteran Jeremy Isaacs and narrated by Kenneth Branagh, the series tracks the Cold War from its post-World War II beginnings to its late '80s collapse and consists of more than 500 interviews with various U.S. and foreign dignitaries as well as hours and hours of archival footage. It's a perfect gift for both history-buff relatives and students desperately trying to cram for finals.
Extras: Two additional documentaries, The Hoaxters and Castro: In His Own Words.
Also on DVD:
Sonny Bono, Mamie Van Doren and Regis Philbin are just some of the celebrities that pop up in Fantasy Island: The Complete Second Season, one of the strangest and silliest TV shows ever made. Less strange, but still pretty silly in that early '80s way is Vegas: The Third Season, Vol. 1, with Robert Urich as Las Vegas gumshoe Dan Tannna. And if you're looking for cheap TV to pass the summer months, both seasons of the long-canceled Dirty Sexy Money and Samantha Who? are available on disc for less than the cost of a cable hook-up.
