Saturday Night Live: The Best of Christina Applegate

This week Christina Applegate hosted SNL, and in case you didn't hear from all of the promos and interviews about it, the last time she hosted was in 1993. As she bragged about mentioned in her monologue, that episode featured the first appearance of the classic Chris Farley sketch "Matt Foley: Motivational Speaker." While none of the sketches from this episode were quite that memorable, there were a few worth watching again. Lucky for Applegate, she was in all of them and steered clear of an especially boring "Weekend Update." Overall, it was a successful night for the up-for-anything host, even if she had a bad case of raccoon eyes in all of her host portraits.

"Christina Applegate Monologue"
Our first impression of Applegate was an easy "wow." She came out looking gorgeous and quickly broke out into an impressive musical monologue. Her song about mid-October as the last reprieve before holiday season was funny and relatable except for one thing: "not every single thing tastes like pumpkin." Where have you been, Christina? The inevitable pumpkin spice has been haunting us every day for the past two weeks. But we can overlook that in exchange for more of Jason Sudeikis as Dane Cook.

"The Californians: Wedding"
Despite the still-raw loss of Kristen Wiig, SNL brought back last season's standout "The Californians." Applegate was a great addition to the bleached blondes of the fictional soap opera, and her own accented highway lingo fit right in with the hilariously over-the-top performances of Fred Armisen and Bill Hader. It did seem to go on a little too long, but the random addition of Usain Bolt made the extra time worth it.

"Tech Talk: iPhone 5"
While she was entertaining enough in this sketch, Applegate wasn't the one who brought the laughs. That would have to go to Armisen, Nasim Pedrad and Cecily Strong as the Chinese factory workers who built the iPhone 5. Almost every moment of this ultimate "first world problems" shaming was hilarious, but the highlight definitely belonged to Strong playing the "sad Chinese violin" while Pedrad did a "traditional sarcastic dance."

"Taken Trailer"
While Taken 2 is almost too easy to mock, SNl did a good job with "Give Us All Our Daughters Back." Featuring great impressions of Mel Gibson, Denzel Washington, Liam Neeson, Uma Thurman and Steven Seagal (Armisen's Harrison Ford wasn't too impressive) and all of the elements found in any revenge-action movie, "Give Us All Our Daughters Back" has to be a much better movie than Taken 2.
