Pushing Daisies: How Do I Love Thee? Let Me Count the Ways

I adored Pushing Daisies last season, it was just so cute and clever and charming, but I worried, because I also adored the first season of Ugly Betty and season two got a little dicey and season three's been hit or miss. I'm just delighted that Pushing Daisies (which no one is watching for whatever reason) is still as perfectly precious and adorable as it was and now even more so because the characters have just really come in to their own. Sometimes I feel like I'm going to burst with absolute love for it. I need a hug machine to give me a comforting squeeze after each episode! I was feeling inspired to write poetry about how I adore this show, but I'm really terrible at writing poetry. Instead, I'm just borrowing my title from the Elizabeth Barret Browning sonnet and counting the multiple ways that I am absolutely smitten with this show.

Pushing Daisies: Season 1

Pushing Daisies: Season 1

The first thing you'll notice about the Pushing Daisies first season DVD is that underneath the totally expected cardboard sleeve with Lee Pace and Anna Friel on the cover are an inner case and liner notes that look like a diner menu from the 1950s. Oh, and the actual discs? Look like pies! Very sweet, and we're just getting started.

Each of the three discs includes three of the season's nine episodes, but Disc 3 contains all of the special features... or, wait, make that THE special feature, since there is only one. (Unless you're counting the ability to turn the pre-episode "Previously on..." segment on and off, in which case, don't count that. You'll only be cheating yourself.)

All Aboard the Pushing Daisies Free Pie Express!

All Aboard the Pushing Daisies Free Pie Express! Not only are they Daisy pushers, now they're pie pushers too! Next month, the Pushing Daisies promotional team will be sending a big ol' bus decorated as Ned's Pie Hole restaurant across the nation to dole out all sorts of presents to Pushing Daisies fans and pie enthusiasts alike. If you're in the right place at the right time, you can drop on in to The Pie Hole-on-wheels and check out memorabilia from the show, sample some delicious pies and even take home some Daisies-branded kitchen utensils! Ahoy! Oh wait, that's for boats. Sorry. Anyway, the Pie Hole will also be decked out with Plasma TVs showing clips from the show, and staffed with quirky Daisies-esque folks galore (actors from the show are allegedly not appearing at any of these, but you know ABC will make at least one of them show up to the Santa Monica event or something.)

Daisies, Dirty and Stone Get Canned

Daisies, Dirty and Stone Get Canned

OK. I've finally stopped weeping and think I can handle writing this post. After lots of speculation, and a whole freakin' heap of denial on my part, ABC officially decided not to pick up Pushing Daisies. To be fair, two other sophomore series, Dirty Sexy Money and Eli Stone, also got axed by the alphabet network. They refuse to actually say cancelled, which just ticks me off more. Why give people the false hope (no matter how minuscule that may be) that there's a chance they could change their minds. It's just mean. Maybe they just want people to send them free pies.

There's a potential resurrection in the works for Pushing Daisies.

Once Upon a Time vs. Grimm: Will Either Fairytale Series Live Happily Ever After?

Shows with similar thematic elements that debut around the same time isn't exactly something new -- just think of 30 Rock and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip, Ghost Whisperer and Medium, Lipstick Jungle and Cashmere Mafia or even this season's Mad Men wannabes Pan Am and Playboy Club. Now Grimm is appearing less than a week after Once Upon a Time and on the surface, they have one major commonality: both take classic fairytale characters and storylines and attempt to bring them into the present day. But the similarities primarily end there. Will viewers look past the promos and magazine blurbs to realize that the programs are absolutely nothing alike? Or will they be forcibly lumped together forever? And more importantly, will either last more than a season or two?

TWoP 10: Shows That Were Cancelled Too Soon

TWoP 10: Shows That Were Cancelled Too Soon

This was a hard one. Honestly, we could have probably done a TWoP 20. But the untimely demise of Pushing Daisies got us thinking about the most gut-wrenching cancellations -- the ones that we're still devastated about. And we're not talking about shows that went off the air after a nice long successful run, or shows that the writers opted not to do any more of (like Extras or Battlestar Galactica), these were shows that were unceremoniously ripped out of our hands during the midst of their all-too-brief lifespans. A cruel twist of the TV fates or TPTB who often only recognize ratings and not rare bits of genius in television form, leaving us still wanting more.
