Bonnie & Clyde: Bland to the Bone

Bonnie & Clyde: Bland to the Bone

Let's get this out of the way off the top: the three-network miniseries event Bonnie & Cyde, which aired its first installment last night on A&E, History and Lifetime with Part 2 to follow tonight, is not a remake of the 1967 Arthur Penn classic about the '30s-era outlaws that set Hollywood on its ear and made superstars of Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. While that may seem obvious, the movie casts such a long shadow -- and has so thoroughly defined the historical and pop culture image of Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker -- that it's important to point out that the miniseries aspires to stay closer to the historical record than the more freewheeling film, which gleefully mixed broad comedy and bloody violence in ways that audiences at the time were unprepared for. Although there are some comic flourishes (and basic cable-appropriate -- i.e. PG-13 – bits of bloodshed) in this expanded, made-for-TV version, it's mostly a straightforward account of the duo's life and times.

Early Bonnie Hunt Show Impressions

Early Bonnie Hunt Show Impressions As an unabashed, longtime Bonnie Hunt enthusiast, I decided to disregard yesterday's premiere of The Bonnie Hunt Show in favor of today's episode for blog purposes, partly because Hunt seemed really nervous for the whole first episode and not entirely herself, and partly because the lunatic impression/accent generator on speed that is Robin Williams on a talk show annoyingly took up most of it. Bonnie seemed much more relaxed today during both her monologue (which she does sitting behind a desk that is so low it's distracting) and her interview with the fabulous Swoosie Kurtz, who I'd wager is a lot less frustrating to interview than Robin Williams.

Either J.J. Abrams really like making TV shows, or just really enjoys getting huge paychecks.

When Celebrities Make (Kinda) Beautiful Music Together

When Celebrities Make (Kinda) Beautiful Music Together

We've got to give Band From TV some credit. There are busy celebrities (well... some of them at least) who take time out of their day jobs (well... some of them at least) to play music and give the money to charity. It's nice to see that these TV stars (current and former) are giving back. The results are perfectly fine. They perform a mix of classic cover tunes and they're quite decent on their respective instruments. I'm sure Simon Cowell would have some snarkier critiques of their performances, but if you are a big fan of any of the actors, you'll probably be delighted with their recently released album Hoggin All the Covers.
