Hot tip: If no one is watching your network comedy, slate it for a slow and painful Friday night death.

When thinking about all of this fall's new shows, most of them stick out in our minds either because of their quality, or sheer awfulness. But Chicago Fire falls somewhere smack in the middle -- it's one of those shows that is so generic, we almost thought that it had started airing weeks ago and had been canceled already. It isn't a truly terrible series, but it treads on so much familiar ground that it's impossible to care strongly about in any way.

The insanity of Fall TV is in full swing, and while we're busy judging shows as a whole, a lot of the new and returning shows really have us puzzled with some of the unusual choices they are making. We'll likely never get these answers, but we pose the questions that really have us stumped.

Based solely on the trailers and descriptions and scant amount of additional footage we saw during this week's network upfront presentations, here are the new shows that have piqued our interested for next season. Though since Ringer actually topped our list at this time last year, we're going to hold off planning our viewing schedules until we've had a chance to screen the full pilots.

The Fox upfront presentation began with a pre-taped bit about the cast of New Girl interviewing for a new roommate, and their options were Fox stars ranging from Mr. Schue to Walter to the kid from Touch. Oh, and Emily Deschanel, because they couldn't resist making a sister joke. It was cute and the highlight of the network's hour-long presentation, for sure. Most of the rest focused on clips from this season of New Girl, a live awkward bit of banter between Zooey and Mindy Kaling about who is the most adorkable Fox star of them all, and Ryan Seacrest being Ryan Seacresty. They also made a big deal about The X-Factor and officially introduced new judges Demi Lovato and Britney Spears, while making a couple of digs at The Voice. I suppose they had to fill the time somehow, because aside from talking about some new random animation domination HD thing that's going to air in the dead of Saturday night (11 PM-12:30 AM), and referencing baseball as much as they could, there really wasn't a lot of new stuff to show off. But here's what we thought of the new programs they did preview:

TV show names often aim for simplicity over complexity: For every Buffy the Vampire Slayer or How I Met Your Mother, there are a dozen Houses, Fringes and Heroeses. But is it just us, or do this season's new shows come off as a little... generic? We're all for brevity, but can we at least get a hint of meaning? Or mystery? Or, dare we say it, excitement? Just because The Office is entering its sixth season doesn't mean that a show named after a common noun is going to win you an Emmy. Here are a bunch of new programs that we feel could use a little something extra in the name department.

Finally, upfront week is over and all the networks have revealed their schedules. Friday nights are shaping up to be busy... if you are still watching Smallville or Ugly Betty. The CW unleashed their five night lineup today, and it is filled with more pretty people than you can stand.
