Christopher McQuarrie Expands His Reach with Jack Reacher

A superstar in the world of crime fiction, the new action film Jack Reacher introduces moviegoers to the titular soldier-turned-nomadic-investigator, who stars in a best-selling series of crime novels by British author Lee Child. Written and directed by The Usual Suspects scribe Christopher McQuarrie, Reacher stars Tom Cruise as Child's creation and dispatches him to Pittsburgh, where he helps an in-over-her-head lawyer (Rosamund Pike) attempt to save a man from Death Row -- a case that pits him against morally ambiguous cops (David Oyelowo) and shadowy villains (Werner Herzog). In addition to trying on the outfit of an anti-hero, Jack Reacher also affords Cruise the chance to show off his behind-the-wheel skills, as he did all his own driving for the big car chase that comes midway through the movie. McQuarrie touched on that scene -- as well as the hotly contested decision to cast Cruise as Reacher -- during a recent press visit to New York, where he was accompanied by Child, Pike and Oyelowo.

J.J. Abrams Fears Science, Joshua Jackson Is Just Bad At It

J.J. Abrams Fears Science, Joshua Jackson Is Just Bad At It As the whole TV-watching world is currently a-buzzin' with Fringe anticipation (myself very much included, as I've refused to watch a screener before tomorrow night's premiere and am determined to be surprised no matter how many spoilers I have lurking in my midst... named Angel), we listened in on an open call with creator J.J. Abrams and star Joshua Jackson recently and got an inside scoop on the show, witnessed the two react to an insane reporter's question, and even learned that invisibility may, in fact, exist. Because those are the kinds of things that happen when you're in the (long distance phone) presence of J.J. Abrams.

Happy Birthday, Jackée!

Happy Birthday, Jackée! The unfortunate thing about Jackée Harry's career is that everyone pretty much just remembers her unbelievably annoying character on the unbelievably annoying show, Sister Sister. Well folks, let me remind you that back in the '80s amongst a decadent sea of Dallases and Dynastys, she played one fabulous cheap tramp on the sitcom 227. Finally, a tramp on TV we can relate to! And thanks to the wonderful people at Hulu, we can all revel in her hot pink lipstick and mismatched rouge party together! Happy 52nd, Jackée!

Jack Bauer: 52 and Loving It

by Mindy Monez June 20, 2008 2:05 pm
Jack Bauer: 52 and Loving It 24 will fast-forward four years next season for "dramatic purposes," according to a Fox spokesperson. (That's genius, by the way. From now on, every time I do something that doesn't make sense I'm just going to say I did it for "dramatic purposes." Office-mate: "Why are you talking to that photo of Smokey the Bear, Mindy?" Me: "Dramatic purposes." This will work.) Considering this show has about as much respect for temporal continuity as Jack does for Muslims (I went there!), the leap will put the story in the year 2017 and Bauer at the ripe old age of 52, according to the New York Post's carbon-dating. But don't worry, this spokesperson guy is pretty sure the writers are just going to pretend that isn't happening. "We've always built in significant passages of time between seasons of '24.' Luckily, like all great iconic characters, Jack Bauer is ageless." Translation: Shut up! We do what we want! Now I see where Jack gets it.

Dancing with the Stars: Does Season 17 Have the Best Cast Yet?

Just one day after it was announced that American Idol would bring on Harry Connick Jr. (and bring back Jennifer Lopez) as a judge, Dancing with the Stars one-upped them with the reveal of what is, quite possibly, their best cast yet.

American Idol: Judging the New Judges

American Idol: Judging the New Judges

We've only had one outing with the new judging panel on American Idol, but we can already see just how this season is going to pan out with the likes of Keith Urban, Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj joining Randy Jackson. And frankly, we're not all that impressed, though we never imagined a big fight could erupt over who knows more about Mean Girls. Here are our initial thoughts:
