With the extended first season coming to a close, I'm officially ready to say that ABC Family's Jane By Design turned out to be one of my favorite new shows of the year. Considering the fact that I've yet to find anyone else who actually watches the series (outside of our forum, that is), and in hopes that someone from the network will see this and decide to order a second season, here are five solid reasons why I recommend catching up with Jane and the gang:
If you're part of the small population of people that thought Survivor needed more romance and that The Bachelor needed more snake pits, then Love in the Wild is the show for you. Though Season 2 of the reality dating/adventure show has attempted to bump up the dramatics from the previous season, kicking out Darren McMullen in favor of Jenny McCarthy, the show hasn't lost its pretty-but-totally-desperate contestants. We can't wait to see the ridiculous and semi-dangerous scenarios they will be forced into this upcoming season, all in the name of TV love. Take a look at some of the words of wisdom from the contestants on Week 1 of the new season.
Last season, Boardwalk Empire was a decent show that had sensational cinematography but some severe pacing problems and characters that were dead weight -- too bad, since it had a lot of hype and a ton of potential. We just dove back into the Prohibition era last night and we're cautiously optimistic that this season will succeed in the places where the series faltered last year. Here's why:
Hawaii Five-0 was one of the bigger surprises of last season, given that so many remakes have been absolutely awful (Bionic Woman, Knight Rider, etc...). But somehow, this show managed to break out of the shadow of the original series and really deliver a fresh spin on the cop procedural. I enjoyed the hell out of it, but was more than a little bit worried that Season 2 would fall into a sophomore slump. I needn't have been concerned; yesterday's premiere was every bit as good as last year, if not better.
Now those Brits know how to put out DVD extras! This was by far one of my favorite DVD watching experiences in recent months, and not just because I found the second season of this Doctor Who spinoff to be amazing, but because it was stuffed with bonus features that I actually wanted to watch. Shocking, I know!
For those of you unfamiliar with this BBC America show, imported from the lovely UK, its a sci-fi series that takes the extremely attractive DW recurring guest Captain Jack Harkness (a sexy former time agent who can't die, played by the dreamy John Barrowman), teaming him with smart, sassy detectives and pitting them against otherworldly creatures. Sounds a little X-Files-ish, but when you throw in some hysterical dialogue and lots and lots of sex (hetero, homo and other), it becomes an addictively entertaining show that's like nothing else on earth.
Much as it pains me to admit this, I'm disappointed with the Season 2 set for Ugly Betty. I love this show. I think it is so smart and clever, and while Season 2 lacked some of the charm of the premiere season, it still had some stellar episodes. Those are all on here. But there's not a hell of a lot else.
