Torchwood: Miracle Day: Out With the Old, In With the New

Torchwood: Miracle Day: Out With the Old, In With the New

It's not exactly a secret that I love Torchwood and that I was impatiently waiting for Friday night's season premiere. While there were some moments that were fantastic, a lot of it felt like set-up and left me underwhelmed. It seems like this 10-episode arc is trying too hard to bring in a new audience by debuting in the US on Starz before airing in the UK and moving the setting of the show stateside as well. Because of that, this isn't exactly the same show that I've loved all along. Then again, this episode didn't exactly make it easy for new viewers to jump right in. So its somewhere in the middle of the road and hopefully in the second episode they'll pick up the pace, get their groove back and everyone will have a clue what the hell is going on.

Torchwood: The Pros and Cons of a U.S. Remake

Torchwood: The Pros and Cons of a U.S. Remake

Fox is teaming up with Russell T. Davies to work on developing an Americanized version of the popular British show Torchwood. For those unfamiliar with it, it's a sci-fi series that involves a small team of crime fighters who deal primarily with the otherworldly. As a fan of the show, my initial reaction to the Fox news was of horror, and while I'm still highly skeptical that this remake should ever make it to the screen, there are some potentially good things about the idea. Here are the pros and cons of bringing Captain Jack across the Atlantic:

Torchwood: They Are Coming… to DVD

Torchwood: They Are Coming… to DVD

If you didn't watch the Torchwood: Children of Earth miniseries, you are seriously missing out. You should also not read this very spoiler-filled review that is below. Just know that the DVD is in stores now, and even if you aren't a fan of the show you should go buy it right this very minute, because this is one of the best things I've personally seen on television in a while. And it's an easy series to jump into for newcomers. It's just a show about three cops working at a very underground agency called Torchwood, specializing in alien crimes. Do yourself a favor. Buy it. Now. Trust me.

Torchwood: The Book… Sorta

Torchwood: The Book… Sorta

Still reeling from the mind-blowing Torchwood finale? Can't wait for new episodes? Yeah, me either. I tried to console myself with Torchwood: The Official Magazine Yearbook, but it was like sticking a band-aid on a gaping wound. Don't get me wrong, it was very well thought-out and well put-together and filled with gorgeous pictures of the dreamy Capt. Jack, but it's not quite as good as an episode.

Torchwood: Season 2

Torchwood: Season 2

Now those Brits know how to put out DVD extras! This was by far one of my favorite DVD watching experiences in recent months, and not just because I found the second season of this Doctor Who spinoff to be amazing, but because it was stuffed with bonus features that I actually wanted to watch. Shocking, I know!

For those of you unfamiliar with this BBC America show, imported from the lovely UK, its a sci-fi series that takes the extremely attractive DW recurring guest Captain Jack Harkness (a sexy former time agent who can't die, played by the dreamy John Barrowman), teaming him with smart, sassy detectives and pitting them against otherworldly creatures. Sounds a little X-Files-ish, but when you throw in some hysterical dialogue and lots and lots of sex (hetero, homo and other), it becomes an addictively entertaining show that's like nothing else on earth.

TWoP 10: Best New Scripted Shows of This Summer

We could go on for days about our love of Dance Moms, or about how much we've enjoyed this sexed-up season of True Blood, but we expect to be entertained by reality TV trash and our favorite returning shows . What really surprised us this summer was just how many new scripted programs kept us genuinely enthralled -- a pleasant change from the years when all we had to watch in between trips to the pool and barbecues was the likes of Swingtown. And bonus points to ABC Family for really upping their game as a network in recent months. Here's what made it a summer to remember:

TWoP 10: Spinoffs That Were Better Than Their Original Shows

TWoP 10: Spinoffs That Were Better Than Their Original Shows

We're not sure that the world really needs a spinoff to Criminal Minds, but then again, we didn't think sub-divisions of Law & Order were necessary and SVU and Criminal Intent proved us wrong by being far more enjoyable than their mothership. And while spinoffs may not always grab us right off the bat (like NCIS: Los Angeles), sometimes a new series just needs a little time before it starts improving upon its predecessor. Case in point: The City returned this week with new characters and a compelling new focus that made it far more watchable than the now totally contrived LC-less The Hills. But these aren't the only shows that have been better than their originals. Here's our look back at the best spinoffs from the past two decades:
