This might be the first Emmy nomination morning in a number of years that didn't leave us pounding our heads into the wall. That's not to say that there weren't a great deal of snubs (there were) or that undeserving people didn't get recognized (they did), but the number of happy surprises eased much of the frustration that we would otherwise feel. For us, the biggest pleasant surprise was that Friday Night Lights's tremendous husband and wife duo (played by Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton) were finally nominated for their years of brilliant, ignored work. The other big highlight was getting to watch nomination presenter Sofia Vergara stumble over pretty much everyone's name -- so much so that co-presenter Joel McHale generously pronounced "Hargitay" for her. And as if that wasn't enough to charm us, McHale also coped with his Emmy snub far better than we did, by simply shrugging and saying, "It's OK, I phoned it in." Is there an Emmy for best sport? Anyway, on with the rest of our initial reactions to this year's nominees.
It was a lackluster year for musicals and a great year for plays, but, alas, the gay prom must go on. Last night's televised Tonys event (yes, they still televise the Tonys) was star-studded, upset-filled and full of enormous and pretentious egos. Host Sean Hayes was funny for the most part, and overall it was a fabulous way to spend a Sunday evening. But there were lowlights, of course. Read on as I list the best and worst parts of the show.
While we can't say we're surprised that the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences has gotten rid of the Emmys' main title theme category, it's definitely a little depressing to think about the lack of original theme songs in modern television. To stay positive, we're focusing on the potential 2010-appropriate categories that may fill the void. In the spirit of catering to the current trends in television, here are a few suggestions, along with possible nominees.
It's Oscar night! The most predictable Oscar night in recent memory! Hopefully some surprises and upsets occur, and that Jack Donaghy and Gavin Volure are hilarious, but either way, we will be here all night long, liveblogging the events. Zach Oat and Mindy Monez will be switching off writing duties every half hour until the bitter end. Let's go!
They may have had to walk through a very soggy red-carpet to get to the event, but it will all be worth it for a shiny trophy as their prize. See who won! We'll be updating all night as they are announced.
Welcome to the Golden Globes! We'll be bringing you commentary on every rambling speech and every drunken audience response for the next few hours, Your bloggers for the evening will be Zach Oat and Mindy Monez, and here we go!
It's that time of year, when awards start getting announced and we start getting frustrated by what was nominated and what was overlooked. And while much of the Golden Globe buzz is centered around the movie categories and those noms, there's some interesting (good and bad) stuff happening over in the TV world as well. Those crazy Hollywood Foreign Press folks apparently love them some vampires and singing!
Ordinarily, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's decision to hire the first host of the Golden Globe Awards since 1995 would be considered a huge mistake. After all, one of the charms of that telecast -- aside from the fact that attendees are able to drink at their seats throughout the evening, of course -- is just how fast the ceremony usually flies by thanks to the lack of awkward, forced patter from an eager-to-please host. But in the case of the 2010 Globes (airing Jan. 17, 8PM ET, NBC), we're happy to have the evening in the hands of Ricky Gervais, who, when not creating brilliant television comedy, has spent the last several years often single-handedly enlivening dull awards shows as a presenter or winner. In an interview with us and other media outlets, he explained how he's going to bring his signature style to his role as MC for what has ordinarily been a three-hour schmooze fest.
I find today's TWoP News to be very... erotic. Too early to say "sexiest TWoP News ever"? Probably, right?
Yesterday, they finally announced who would be hosting the Academy Awards ceremony next year, after it was revealed that Hugh Jackman would not return following last year's show-stopping performance. And the lucky host is... Alec Baldwin. And Steve Martin. Both of them. Because... it's... uh... huh? True, Baldwin just won his second Emmy in a row, and Martin has hosted the Oscars twice before, but this really makes zero sense to us, for the following reasons.
