When it was first announced that Travis Wall was getting his own reality show on Oxygen about his new dance company, I was giddy with excitement, and the giant bus ads around the city have been teasing me ever since. But unfortunately this show, which should be my favorite (it's got all of the beautiful contemporary choreography that he's known for and is chock-a-block full of So You Think You Can Dance alumni), is the victim of a massive case of bad timing. While normally I'd be thrilled to put up with whining and disgusting frat boy-like behavior in order to watch dancers put themselves through torture (I did watch all of Breaking Pointe, after all), I'm currently preoccupied by the gymnasts at the Olympics doing even more disturbing things to their bodies. Even Dance Moms and So You Think You Can Dance were wise enough to give the Olympics a wide berth.
The gist of the show is that Travis has teamed up with his buddies Nick Lazzarini (So You Think You Can Dance's Season 1 winner) and Teddy Florence to start a dance company called Shaping Sound. The three guys live together, along with their friend Kyle, who moved cross country to work with them. The drama comes from the fact that all of their friends and family think they can just join the troupe without auditioning... and because Travis' name is far more of a brand and all of the agents and marketing people want to use that to advertise the company. Jealousy ensues, but weirdly not enough that they are bothered by the fact that his face is plastered all over the promotion for this series, and that he even does the voiceover for each episode. Clearly, they must realize they are hitching their wagons to this Emmy nominee's star power in order to further their own careers, right? It's just weird.
Still, it's nice to see Melanie Moore, though that Taja girl seems like a self-important diva. If I continue to watch, I'll be fast-forwarding to the parts with the dancing because while the show itself lacks any compelling storylines, the choreography by Travis and some of these other talented folks is still beautiful and impressive. Or rather, it will be after it's had some distance from the Olympic floor routines and diving competitions.
