This weekend, the highly anticipated HBO series Game of Thrones finally debuts, and while there are legions of fans of George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire novels waiting with excitement, other readers are just as eager to nitpick every little detail. At the same time, many HBO viewers may be tuning in for some good drama with a dash of fantasy with no knowledge of the complex mythology of the books. Fashioning a satisfying television show that satisfies these different audiences was a huge undertaking (one several years in the works) that fell squarely on the shoulders of writer-producers David Benioff and Dan Weiss. The duo recently talked to us and other journalists on a media conference call to address concerns and let fans new and old know what to expect.
Because each week's eliminated American Idol contestant media call is a repetitive display of scripted, vague, overly positive answers from extremely coached individuals, I thought I'd break up the formula with this week's Pia Toscano call, and simply check off each required answer we seem to get from every Idol castoff every week. Unsurprisingly, Pia hit all the requirements. Slightly surprisingly, she also repeatedly asserted that she is psychic. That sure is weird!
Like Jerry Seinfeld, Paul Reiser is kind of TV comedy royalty. With long runs on My Two Dads and Mad About You, love them or hate them, he never really needs to work again. But, just as Jerry Seinfeld came back to confuse audiences with The Marriage Ref, Reiser has come back with a sitcom that explains exactly what it is he's doing right now: hanging out with his male acquaintances, taking meetings and taking care of his kids. If that doesn't sound funny, well, we're not going to correct you (it's kind of like a watered-down Curb Your Enthusiasm), but we sat down with the jokey TV icon to find out where the show came from and where it's going.
Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution returns to ABC tonight with Jamie embroiled in a battle with the Los Angeles Unified School District over his critiques of their school lunches, so it looks like this season will be a little different from the comparative slam dunk that was Season 1. In honor of tonight's premiere, I interviewed Jamie about all the school district drama, the state of reality television and even his own junk food guilty pleasures.
Law & Order: Los Angeles returns next week, with two very familiar faces in new roles. Alfred Molina's D.D.A. Ricardo Morales will be taking a demotion to rejoin the police force, and New York A.D.A. Connie Rubirosa (Alana De La Garza) will be moving to L.A. On the eve of this rejiggered procedural's second go-round, we talked to the two of them about their new jobs, and what's in store for the new season.
Last week's double elimination on American Idol saw two more ladies voted off of the Idol stage. Thia Megia and Naima Adedapo failed to win over the voters, which is unsurprising, given the general pattern of voting from previous seasons (not to mention their bland and out-there styles, respectively), and the pair each gave their two cents on the show's massive voting block of teenage girls. Read on to learn more about African dance, Idol's one-room schoolhouse and how old people are technologically whack.
FX brought out the majority of their talent at last night's upfront event, and I was able to snag a few minutes each with two of the stars of their biggest comedies -- Nick Kroll and Charlie Day -- to discuss their upcoming respective seasons of (hopeful) O.J. Simpson cameos and child pageants. Read on for all the highly inappropriate insider details.
This week, Grey's Anatomy embarks on a time-honored departure episode tradition: the musical episode. Featuring the cast singing songs that have defined the show over the years, "Song Beneath the Song" takes place in Callie's post-car-accident mind, so though the episode may be a risk, at least it'll all be just a dream (I'm guessing) in the end. To promote the big event, I talked to Little Grey herself, Chyler Leigh, about the songs, the grind of doing a series for seven long years, Lexie's new relationship with Avery and more. Read on for the whole shebang.
Kurt Sutter may not like it, but yesterday he created a small media firestorm by tweeting some seemingly critical comments about Matthew Weiner's ongoing negotiations with AMC on the same day that he'd be subjected to the press at FX's upfront presentation. I talked to the Sons of Anarchy creator at the party last night, and though he was typically tight-lipped about SOA spoilers, he certainly had something more to say about Matt Weiner's Mad Men situation. Read on for my brief conversation with the world's most entertaining showrunner.
This weekend is the 200th Syfy original Saturday-night movie, Scream of the Banshee, and while the monster in it looks to live up to the standards set by Megashark, the star of the movie has a pedigree all his own. He's Lance Henriksen, star of dozens of science-fiction and horror movies, including a few bona fide classics and the TV series Millennium, and we got to sit in on a conference call with him to talk about the movie, his love of Westerns, and what he'd be doing if he wasn't acting.
