MTV's Awkward. has steadily been one of our favorite summer sitcoms for two seasons now. Though the Season 3 premiere wasn't great, we assumed that Jenna and the gang would bounce back quickly... and it turns out, we were wrong. After watching last night's midseason finale, "Redefining Jenna," we're starting to wonder if we need to DTR back to "not worth watching." Here's why:
Ming's Overtly Racist Storyline
Awkward really needs to drop the Asian Mafia storyline. The jokes are never funny, the stereotypes are cringe-inducing and it unfortunately highlights how incapable the writers are at finding something for Ming to do that isn't ridiculously hackneyed. It's such a shame, too; Jessica Lu is clearly full of energy and seems to have pretty great comedic timing.
The show constantly tells us how sexy and deep Jenna finds him, but we're not so convinced. Compared to both Matty and Jake, Colin is nowhere near as good-looking or charming. It doesn't help that Awkward has made the boys incredibly likable this season, while the ladies' characters have significantly dwindled -- at this point, we'd prefer to watch a Matty and Jake spin-off all about their bromance.
Tamara Isn't Fun Anymore
We get the writers' choice to have Jenna go through a lot of difficult emotions right now and over-think every little thing, but sucking the life out of Tamara is inexcusable. We loved her as a weirdo sidekick whom the popular girls all hated. Now that she's a likable cheerleader dating the second hottest guy in school, the magic is gone. And don't even get us started on Val and Lacey; those characters have gone way past the point of redeemable.
There's Much Ado About Nothing
There have been entire episodes that have been complete wastes; for example, the conceit of "Guilt Trippin'" was that the girl Jenna thought was sad about homecoming was actually a drug dealer. The character and plot development have been seriously lacking -- frankly, if not for Matty calling Jenna out about her selfishness in last night's "Redefining Jenna," we'd be ready to throw in the towel completely.
It's Not Awkward(.)
To quote Awkward forum commenter bilgistic, "I feel about Jenna now the way I feel about Tess on Suburgatory. They are both 'too big for their britches,' as my elders would say, and I'm just tired of their whiny, entitled, boring shtick. They both started out as interesting(-ish) characters, but the 'I'm so misunderstood' and 'I'm an outsider' things obviously don't ring true anymore, so what's the appeal? Just another smart, pretty high schooler with a hot boyfriend. Color me not intrigued." Hopefully the second half of the season will have Jenna, Tamara and Ming dumped by their admirers and back to square one, while Sadie rises to the top and makes their lives hell once again. You're welcome.
